AUDITIONS: Parade

The Alban Arts Center announces auditions for the musical Parade, directed by Jakob Spruce with music direction by Cayce Murphy. The production seeks 18 to 25 performers of all ages, genders, abilities, races, and ethnicities to portray the people of Georgia, and prior stage experience is not required. Black performers and male performers are strongly encouraged to audition. Auditions take place at the Alban Arts Center, and only one session is required. Please prepare 30 seconds to 1 minute of a song, preferably in a musical theatre style or by composer Jason Robert Brown, though any selection is welcome. You may sing a cappella or use an audio backing track. An audition form on the Alban Arts Center website must be completed in advance. If callbacks are needed, they will be scheduled. Video auditions are accepted for those unable to attend in person and should include a 30 to 60 second musical theatre selection in the style of the show or the composer. Performances are planned at the Alban Arts Center, and attendance at all tech rehearsals and performances is required. Parade, with a book by Alfred Uhry and a score by Jason Robert Brown, is a Tony Award winning work that examines love and hope in the midst of religious intolerance, political injustice, and racial conflict. Viewer discretion is advised due to themes that include racism, antisemitism, references to sexual violence, and simulated physical violence and murder within the historical context of the story. Many roles may double, all parts require strong singers, and dancing is minimal. Characters include Leo and Lucille Frank, community members such as Jim Conley, Newt Lee, Judge Roan, Hugh Dorsey, Governor John Slaton, Frankie Epps, Mary Phagan, Britt Craig, Minnie McKnight, Tom Watson, and an ensemble portraying factory workers, law enforcement, reporters, and residents. The creative team practices nontraditional casting and will choose performers who best fit their interpretation of the play, regardless of race, gender, or physical form. Casting considerations include talent, attitude, creativity, preparedness, ability to take direction, experience, reliability, consistency, community standing, and compatibility with the rehearsal and performance schedule.

Hot 8 Brass Band | Cecil I. Walker Jazz Series

Hot 8 Brass Band brings the pulse of New Orleans street music to the Cecil I. Walker Jazz Series. The group’s members grew up in New Orleans, many first performing together in high school, and their sound springs from second line parades, charged with the funk and drive that define the city’s music. Band members have toured in Japan, Italy, France, Spain, Finland, England and Sardinia. They return each year to the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival and appear at world and jazz festivals throughout the United States and Europe. Their story has been captured on screen in Spike Lee’s When the Levees Broke and If God is Willing and Da Creek Don’t Rise, and they were featured in the second season of HBO’s Tremé. They have also taken the stage at The Apollo for the annual Great Day in Harlem alongside Dr. John, Lou Reed, Nicolas Payton and others. The band has released three recordings praised by critics and appears on the latest Blind Boys of Alabama release on Time-Life Records. The Cecil I. Walker Jazz Series is supported by the Cecil I. Walker Charitable Trust. The Clay Center’s performing and visual arts programming is presented with financial assistance from the West Virginia Department of Tourism and the National Endowment for the Arts, with approval from the West Virginia Commission on the Arts.

Charleston Darkverse Color Run

A goth-inspired color run that trades neon for rich, shadowy tones invites participants into a bold, shared experience. Expect immersive clouds of black, burgundy, plum, charcoal, and ash that create a moody, smoky look and make for striking photos. The vibe centers on self-expression and a distinct dark aesthetic that everyone can enjoy together. Dress to match the theme with black, lace, leather, boots, cloaks, or whatever suits your style. Move however you like, whether that means running, walking, dancing, or simply taking in the energy. The emphasis is on the look, the moment, and the overall experience. Vintage Bicycle Ride

John’s Cyclery has served riders since 1968, helping propel the bicycle boom of the 1970s, and many of those classics are still rolling today. Current owner Rich Harper bought a Schwinn Super Sport from John Turner at age 16 and continues to ride it, much like many customers who grew up with bikes from the shop. This vintage-themed ride follows a flat 5.7 mile route on the residential streets of St. Albans and includes a stop for ice cream at Crafts of the Coal. A drawing will award one rider a $10 Crafts of the Coal gift card. All types of bicycles are welcome, with a special nod to cherished classics.

Clue

Secrets, blackmail, and a sudden death turn Boddy Manor into the setting for a comic investigation. Six unexpected guests become prime suspects as clues surface from room to room. Perhaps Mrs. Peacock is in the study with a knife, or maybe Colonel Mustard is in the library with a wrench. Inspired by the classic Hasbro board game and based on the 1985 Paramount Pictures film, this whodunit blends mystery and humor while keeping the identity of the culprit under wraps until the final reveal. Broadway in Charleston, a Nederlander production, is presented by AARP West Virginia, Encova Insurance, ConServ, Stewart Bell Injury Lawyers, West Virginia Lottery, and WCHS-TV.
