Swing Dance Every Wednesday!

Enjoy a rotating swing dance series at the Valiant Ballroom in Downtown Vancouver, Washington, with lessons for both beginners and intermediate dancers and a social dance included. The curriculum runs on a two-month cycle, and each week of the month focuses on a different skill. In the beginner track, week one introduces 6-count Lindy Hop fundamentals such as footwork, simple turns, and rhythm. Week two explores partnered Charleston basics including footwork, variations, and ways to enter and exit the movement. Week three shifts to 8-count Lindy Hop with core footwork, turns, and rhythm. Week four begins swing-outs with attention to timing, footwork, and body mechanics. Week five features an introduction to the Shim Sham line dance, reinforcing footwork, rhythm, and body mechanics. For intermediate dancers, Month 1 covers closed connection in week one with pulse, rock steps, and movement in closed position. Week two develops turns with preparation, rotation, traveling turns, speed, and momentum. Week three focuses on dancing at faster tempos and variations. Week four refines swing-outs and adds variations. Week five spotlights fancy footwork. Month 2 centers on open connection in week one using push pull, lateral connection, and working limits. Week two addresses momentum and direction, both lateral and rotational. Week three compares 6-count and 8-count to help tell the difference. Week four again polishes swing-outs with variations, and week five returns to fancy footwork. The amount of material covered adjusts to the experience level of the group. Requests are welcome at the end of the lesson, and feedback on lesson content is encouraged. Each lesson is $10 and includes the social dance. Attending only the social is $5. At The Hammond Kitchen + Craft Bar, 100 Women Who Care Clark County hosts a Gather & Grant that brings members together to combine $100 contributions into a single gift for a local nonprofit, with a collective goal of $10,000 for a Clark County charity. The program begins with an update from the most recent recipient on how prior funds benefited the community. Three nominated organizations are then drawn, and the members who put them forward each offer a brief, personal overview without brochures, slides, or outside speakers. Swing Dance Every Wednesday!

A weekly swing dance night at the Valiant Ballroom in Downtown Vancouver, Washington features separate beginner and intermediate lessons along with a social dance. The curriculum rotates every other month to keep things fresh. The beginner track moves through 6-count Lindy Hop fundamentals with foundational footwork, simple turns and rhythm, then Partnered Charleston basics with variations and ways to enter and exit, then 8-count Lindy Hop essentials, an introduction to swing-outs with attention to mechanics, and when a fifth week comes around the classic Shim Sham line routine. The intermediate track alternates focus by month. One month emphasizes closed connection with pulse and rock steps, turn technique from setup through rotation including traveling turns and momentum, faster tempos with practical variations, polish on swing-outs, and fancier footwork ideas. The alternate month explores open connection with push-pull and lateral feel, momentum and direction both side-to-side and rotational, how to distinguish 6-count from 8-count patterns, additional swing-out refinement, and more footwork flair. Instructors adjust the depth of material to match the group, take requests at the end of class, and welcome feedback on lesson content. Admission is $10 per lesson and includes the social, social-only entry is $5, and members receive both the lesson and the social at no cost.

Healing Breathwork & Soundbath with Gisela Mondays

Settle into a restorative breathwork session followed by a soothing soundbath, guided by Gisela Birnschein. The experience begins with gentle movement to relax the body and open energy channels, then shifts into four stages of intentional breathing—introduction, releasing, receiving, and trance—while you rest comfortably with supportive props like blankets, bolsters, and an eye pillow. Sustained, deep breathing can invite a hyper oxygenated, trance-like state that softens the mind and allows the nervous system to open, supporting the body in processing emotions, memories, trauma, and ingrained patterns through natural somatic release. The practice closes with a brief soundbath that uses vibration and frequency to calm the nervous system, deepen integration, and bring the body back into balance. Many people come to relieve stress and anxiety, regulate the nervous system, increase energy and clarity, sleep more deeply, open the heart, and feel grounded, peaceful, and connected. Please bring a yoga mat or another comfortable surface to lie on, a blanket and pillow, water, and a journal if you wish to take notes. Cost is $25 for a single session or $120 for a six session series.

Footloose

Main Stage presents Footloose at Magenta Theater, following Ren and his mother as they relocate from Chicago to a rural town where the local minister has outlawed dancing. Ren faces strict rules at his new school and suspicion from residents, and tensions rise when the minister’s headstrong daughter takes an interest in him, prompting her tough boyfriend to try to damage Ren’s reputation. At its core, the story contrasts a grieving father who longs for the son he lost with a young man who misses the father who left. Set to a Top 40 score that earned Oscar and Tony nominations and enhanced with new songs, the production explores the importance of hearing young voices while offering guidance with compassion. Special features include a VIP donor reception before opening night, a Family Day performance, a Pride Day show, and an alumni night for MPA. Tickets range from $19 to $30, with discounts available for military members, students, and seniors, and participation in Arts4All is offered. The Silken Thread: Five Insects & Their Impacts on Human History

At The Kiggins Theatre, Dr. Rob Wiedenmann examines the roles five insects have played in shaping human history. Drawing from his book coauthored with J. Ray Fisher, The Silken Thread: Five Insects and Their Impacts on Human History, he traces how silkworms supported millennia of silk production and a Silk Road that fostered empires and exchanges of ideas, philosophies, and religions. He explains how fleas and lice transmitted bacteria behind three major plague pandemics, with evidence preserved as DNA in victims’ teeth. He describes typhus spread by lice in crowded settings such as prisons and concentration camps, how it worsened the Irish potato famine, and how Irish refugees brought the disease to North America. He also explores mosquito-borne yellow fever, carried to the Americas through the trans-Atlantic slave trade, which provoked fear in the United States and created hazards during construction of the Panama Canal. A discounted book and ticket combination is available at checkout, offering 15 percent off both. Dr. Wiedenmann is Professor Emeritus of Entomology at the University of Arkansas, holds a B.S. in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology and a Ph.D. in Entomology from Purdue University, and is a past president of the Entomological Society of America.
