Swing Dance Every Wednesday!

A weekly swing dance night at the Valiant Ballroom in Downtown Vancouver, Washington offers both beginner and intermediate lessons followed by social dancing. The curriculum rotates every other month so dancers can build skills step by step. For beginners, each month cycles through core topics. The first Wednesday focuses on 6-count Lindy Hop basics with foundational footwork, simple turns, and rhythm. The second highlights partnered Charleston with essential steps, variations, and ways to enter and exit the pattern. The third returns to fundamentals with 8-count Lindy Hop basics. The fourth introduces swing-outs with attention to footwork, timing, and body mechanics. When a fifth Wednesday occurs, the session explores the Shim Sham line dance with a focus on footwork, rhythm, and mechanics. The intermediate track alternates content across two monthly rotations. In the first rotation, dancers work on closed connection with pulse and rock steps, turn technique including preparation, rotation, and moving turns with speed and momentum, strategies for faster dancing, refinement and variations on swing-outs, and fancy footwork when there is a fifth week. In the second rotation, the emphasis shifts to open connection with push pull and lateral connection while exploring limits, using momentum and direction in both lateral and rotational movement, distinguishing between 6-count and 8-count, another round of swing-out refinements and variations, and fancy footwork on a fifth week. The amount of material covered adapts to the experience level of the group. Requests are welcome at the end of the lesson, and feedback on lesson content is invited. Pricing is $10 per lesson and includes the social dance, $5 for the social only, and members receive both the lesson and social at no cost.

At its center is Francesca Johnson, an Italian immigrant who married an American soldier to escape a country at war. She anticipates a rare four days of quiet on her Iowa farm while her family heads to the 1965 State Fair. When Robert Kincaid, a National Geographic photographer, arrives seeking directions, the brief time they share has the potential to change her life. Doors open 30 minutes before the show. Between the Notes Sound Journey

An immersive sound journey invites deep listening beyond the busy mind as music, story, and earth-based wisdom come together. Hosts Jeff Elkins and Shaun Elligott create a living soundscape with flute, voice, handpan, crystal bowls, and other resonant instruments for an experience that feels centering yet spacious, encouraging emotional unwinding, reflection, and a sense of deeper connection. Jeff, a self-taught flutist and shamanic teacher, offers heart-led tones grounded in the teachings of the earth and minerals. Through stories, humor, and real-life experience, he shapes a passage that feels ancestral yet fully present. Shaun brings a many-layered approach to sound and awareness, drawing from mindfulness, traditional teachings, and deep inner practice to cultivate a kind of living alchemy in which sound helps unify body, emotions, and consciousness. Sessions are guided intuitively and shaped in the moment. Nuanced messages, layered tones, and unexpected musical turns emerge organically, so every experience is different. Bring a yoga mat, a blanket, and an eye cover, and allow extra time to get settled. Capacity is limited to 16 participants. Attendees under 18 should be accompanied by an adult. Kid's Beginner Crochet Class

A one-hour beginner class welcomes kids ages 10 and up to learn crochet in a relaxed, supportive setting while making a bookmark for summer reading. No prior experience is needed, only curiosity and a willingness to try something new. An adult needs to remain on site during the session. With more than 19 years refining her craft and many customers enjoying her work, she has spent the last four years teaching in Portland, Oregon, Vancouver, Washington, and at Flock Fiber Fest. She lives in Vancouver, Washington, and also spends time gardening, baking bread, and caring for her two sons, the Beans. Swing Dance Every Wednesday!

A weekly Wednesday swing dance evening at the Valiant Ballroom in Downtown Vancouver, Washington offers lessons for both beginners and intermediate dancers, along with a social dance to practice new skills. The curriculum rotates every other month, with Month 1 followed by Month 2, a pattern that began with Month 1 in January and Month 2 in February. For beginners, the first Wednesday focuses on six count Lindy Hop fundamentals, the second covers partnered Charleston basics, the third works on eight count Lindy Hop basics, the fourth introduces swing-outs, and a fifth Wednesday features an introduction to the Shim Sham line dance. Intermediate dancers follow a two-month cycle. In Month 1 the emphasis is on working in closed position with pulse and rock steps, then preparation and rotation for turns, then speed and fast-dancing variations, followed by refining swing-outs, with footwork embellishments when there is a fifth week. In Month 2 the focus shifts to open position connection with push-pull and lateral ideas, then momentum and direction both lateral and rotational, then recognizing the difference between six and eight count patterns, followed by further swing-out refinement, and again footwork embellishments on a fifth week. The material covered each week adapts to the level of the group. Requests at the end of the lesson are welcome, and feedback on lesson content is encouraged. Each lesson is $10 and includes the social dance, the social alone is $5. Members receive both the lesson and the social at no cost.

July 4th Coed Doubles Charity Play-Up Tournament

Coed doubles teams gather at Leroy Haagen Memorial Park in Vancouver, WA for a charity play-up tournament offering A/AA, B/BB, and Novice divisions, with room for up to 12 teams in each. Every roster must include one male and one female. Matches have no point cap, and after each matchup the winners move up a court while the other team moves down. Scoring is based on point differential at the end of a match, so the margin of victory becomes the winners’ points while the other side receives none. Short breaks separate matches, and there is a longer pause for rest and refueling during the event. A snack table will be available throughout the day with coffee, bars, fruit, energy drinks, and Gatorade, and acai bowls will also be offered. The top team in each division selects a nonprofit to receive that division’s proceeds, choosing from Friends of Trees, Impact NW, and Lift Up PDX. Registration costs $60 per team or $30 per person. To sign up, comment in the event with your division and teammates, then send payment via Venmo (Haden-Franken) or Cash App ($Had3nF). Free agents may register to be picked up by a team. Registration closes before the tournament, unpaid entries are removed at the payment deadline, and there are no refunds after that deadline.
