Discovery Club: Learn About Bees with Miss Bee Haven Apiary – Port Angeles Main Library

Curious about honey bees and the pollinators that help our gardens and food crops thrive? This Discovery Club session features presenter Tami Baeder from Miss Bee Haven Apiary, PNW, who will explain why pollinators are vital to the food we eat, the different kinds of honey bees, how their bodies are built, and the roles they play inside a hive. A full-size demonstration hive without live bees will be available to examine up close. Baeder has lived in Port Angeles since 2018 and began beekeeping with mentor Jeremiah Johnson in 2019. His family founded Miss Bee Haven Apiary in Utah, and she now leads the PNW chapter, managing over 50 hives each year between Port Angeles and Sequim. Discovery Club is a weekly summer program for kids in grades K to 5 and their families or caregivers, offering hands-on ways to explore art and science, meet new friends, and try new things. Dungeons & Dragons Weekly Thursday Session 2

At Anime Kat, a weekly store-run Dungeons and Dragons campaign uses Fifth Edition rules. Seating depends on what the DM can comfortably manage, and new players can start when spots are available. The adventure unfolds in a custom setting designed for cooperative storytelling, mixing open exploration with labyrinth challenges that carry an emerald motif, plus anime influences like magical‑girl elements and performer‑focused mechanics. Tones range from bright to more intense, with a strong focus on character-driven plots, memorable roleplay, and stories that build over time. Two independent Thursday tables take place in the same world. Their parallel arcs are planned to meet in a shared finale, and anyone attending both tables is effectively playing in two separate campaigns. Before a first visit, confirm the appropriate character level. A $5 fee applies to each player at the table. DMs and GMs do not pay a fee. From each player fee, $3 returns as store credit that can be used on products, excluding events. The DM or GM receives $2 in store credit per registered player, also valid on products only. Each session is led by a single DM or GM. Scheduling updates, availability, and announcements are shared through the community Discord, and the store can provide additional details.

Riftbound Open Play

Anime Kat hosts a weekly open play gathering for Riftbound, the League of Legends trading card game. These meetups are casual and community driven, where players learn the rules together, play matches, and try out deck ideas as the local scene grows. There is no entry fee, and attendees can receive Riftbound promo cards. Learn-to-Play kits and other products are available for purchase. Store staff are still getting familiar with the game, so there is not a formal instructor yet and everyone is learning together. The organizers are also seeking a community leader who already knows the game or is eager to learn quickly and help others. As the community develops, monthly Summoner Skirmish tournaments are scheduled to offer organized play.

Test your solving skills in a timed crossword challenge at the Main Library. Participate solo or pair up with a friend or a new teammate on site, then work as a two-person team to complete three puzzles. Speed helps, but accuracy is key, with scoring modeled on rules used by the American Crossword Puzzle Tournament. Points are awarded for correct entries, fully completed and correct puzzles, and time-based bonuses. Winners will be announced the following Tuesday on the library’s Facebook page. This event is part of an ongoing series held on the fourth Thursday every third month, with an adjusted schedule in December for the holidays.

Dungeons & Dragons Weekly Thursday Session 1

Anime Kat hosts a store-organized Dungeons & Dragons group that uses the 5th Edition rules. The campaign takes place in a homebrew world shaped by collaborative storytelling, combining exploration and an “emerald maze” style of adventure with anime-inspired touches such as magical girl aesthetics, bard-like mechanics, and a mix of light and darker tones. The focus is on character-driven narratives, memorable roleplay, and long-term story development. The group meets weekly with two separate sessions, each operating as its own independent table. Both tables exist within the same world and follow parallel storylines that are intended to merge toward a shared endgame. Participating in both sessions means playing in two different campaigns. Space is limited to what a single Dungeon Master can manage, and only one DM or GM leads each table. Players can join at any time, and should confirm what character level to bring before their first session. There is a $5 table fee per player, while DMs and GMs participate for free. Each paying player receives $3 in store credit redeemable on products, not events, and DMs or GMs receive $2 in store credit per registered player, also redeemable on products, not events. Holy Locust and Hot Damn Scandal

Studio Bob in Port Angeles hosts a lively all-ages night featuring Holy Locust and Hot Damn Scandal. New Orleans-based Holy Locust is an American folk group that stretches tradition, shifting from raw, exploratory numbers to soaring, anthemic songs. Layered vocals rise over driving rhythms and memorable hooks, with strings that surge and cry, and their genre-crossing approach fits just as easily in a quiet listening space as in scrappier settings. Their music carries a clear stance against the pressures of consumer culture. Hot Damn Scandal blends gritty streetwise ballads, smoky jazz colors, carnival energy, shanty-tinged rags, string band funk, tender heartbreakers, and whiskey-soaked love tunes, landing in a theatrical, richly arranged, lyrical style that keeps the dance floor moving. Entry is offered on a $10 to $25 sliding scale at the door. All ages are welcome.

Two genre-crossing acts deliver an evening of vivid storytelling and restless energy. Hot Damn Scandal draws from overlooked corners to craft a mix of outlaw ballads, gritty jazz, carnival bursts, ragtime shanties, string band funk, aching torch songs, and whiskey-soaked romances, all flowing between a quiet ramble and a jubilant roar. Holy Locust brings boundary-pushing American folk that moves from raw and experimental to tuneful and anthemic, stacking evocative vocal harmonies over dynamic rhythms and memorable melodies while strings surge and wail. Their music carries a haunting streak and a clear stance against consumerist exploitation, and it suits both focused listening rooms and more unconventional spaces. The evening features brand new original pieces by trumpeter and songwriter Joel Ricci and highlights the band’s blend of folk, rock, cinematic textures, and jazz. Based in Bellingham, Washington, this quartet shapes reflective songs about loss, transformation, turbulent times, and both collective and personal identity, reaching toward feelings that are hard to name. Their focus is on vital, dynamic songs that build emotional connection and speak to shared humanity and the fragility of life. Copies of Still Here, commemorative posters, and other merchandise will be available to purchase. Tickets range from $25 to $32. After interpreting songs by artists such as Vic Chesnutt, Greg Brown, Ani DiFranco, Tom Waits, and Robyn Hitchcock, they moved into original material with the addition of Joel Ricci, who developed a quiet trumpet approach with the ensemble. Slide guitarist Nakos Marker joined in 2023, sparking a creative surge that led to the nine song album Still Here.

Schoenberg’s Society: Reimagined

Violinist Erin Hennessey and pianist Gabriel Merrill-Steskal recreate the spirit of Arnold Schoenberg’s Society for Private Musical Performances, evoking the intimate, forward-looking atmosphere of early 1920s Vienna where contemporary music could flourish outside the gaze of conservative concert halls and critics. The program includes staples associated with that circle by Claude Debussy and Maurice Ravel, alongside Bela Bartok’s Second Rhapsody for Violin and Piano. It also shines a light on Mary Dickenson-Auner, a violinist and composer who performed in the Society’s concerts yet received limited recognition at the time. Her Irish Melody for Violin and Piano, long unheard since the early 20th century, receives its American premiere. Hennessey appears regularly as a soloist, orchestral, and chamber musician across the United States, the United Kingdom, and Ireland, with work that includes collaborations with leading Irish ensembles. She became Artistic Director of the Olympic Strings Workshop in 2024 and is a PhD researcher at the Royal Academy of Music focusing on the chamber music of Mary Dickenson-Auner, with studies at Oberlin Conservatory, Whitman College, and the Royal Irish Academy of Music, where she taught until 2023. Merrill-Steskal is a multifaceted pianist and scholar whose recent projects range from commissioning new works for fortepiano to preparing and recording a critical edition of a Josepha Auernhammer violin sonata on period instruments, and he has appeared as a soloist with the Ann Arbor Symphony in Prokofiev’s Third Piano Concerto. He has earned awards in international competitions, held fellowships at major festivals, and recorded for Blue Griffin Records for an upcoming release of new piano music by William Horne. Presented by Field Hall. Tickets are priced at $28 to $38 for adults and $15 for youth up to age 18.
