Joseph Eckert, author of THE TRAVELER

Brick & Mortar Books hosts local author Joseph Eckert for the release of his debut speculative time travel novel, The Traveler. The story centers on Scott Treder, who suddenly begins leaping ahead in time. What starts as a single lost day doubles again and again until weeks and years disappear in an instant. As Scott skips forward, his wife works to keep their life intact while their son, Lyle, races through school and delves into quantum physics in a determined effort to bring his father back. Eckert grew up in northern Wisconsin, studied history at the University of Wisconsin Madison, and earned a master’s in political science from the University of Iowa. He has been writing speculative fiction since high school and is drawn to portraying believable people in extraordinary situations, and he now lives in the Greater Seattle area with his family.

Eric Moskowitz, author of THE HARDEST, LONGEST RACE, in conversation with Andrew Walsh

Author and journalist Eric Moskowitz appears in conversation with local podcaster and public radio veteran Andrew Walsh, highlighting Moskowitz’s debut nonfiction book, The Hardest, Longest Race, which recounts the first genuine coast to coast automobile contest in the United States. The book journeys back to 1909, when the nation boasted 253 car makers and M. Robert Guggenheim announced an “Ocean to Ocean” challenge from New York City to the Seattle World’s Fair. Only three American companies took the gamble at the starting line, Acme, Ford, and Shawmut, while the Itala, a costly import, also entered. Wagers leaned toward Acme and the Itala, while the modest Ford Model T and the hard-pressed Shawmut were widely dismissed. Competitors faced a 4,106 mile ordeal of mountains, mud bogs, washed out wagon bridges, and perilous canyon tracks, all in an era before paved highways, seatbelts, or service stations. Henry Ford set out to prove the Model T’s stamina and superiority. A little over three weeks after the flag dropped, a Ford arrived ahead of the Shawmut... yet the celebrated finish concealed a fraud. Moskowitz spent 12 years at The Boston Globe covering transportation and contributed to a team that earned the Pulitzer Prize for coverage of the Boston Marathon bombing. His bylines include The Atlantic and The New York Times, and his work has been anthologized in The Best American Sports Writing and The Best American Newspaper Narratives. He studied American history at the University of Pennsylvania and lives near Boston with his family. Walsh hosts the podcasts Spotless, After These Messages, and Too Beautiful To Live, and previously produced and created shows for KUOW, KCRW, and New Hampshire Public Radio. He lives in North Seattle and mostly avoids cheese.

Wilderness Skills Sampler Summer Camp

Wilderness Skills Sampler Summer Camp is a low barrier overnight experience nicknamed Bite of the Wilderness that introduces the full range of skills taught by Wolf Camp. The overnight group partners with the Wilderness Skills Sampler day camp, then stays at Lake Sammamish Hans Jensen Group Camp to deepen hands-on practice with wilderness survival, wild foods, herbal medicine, wildlife tracking, and other practical outdoor abilities. Participants build real connections with the natural world while gaining confidence and camaraderie. The week unfolds with a clear progression. Monday begins with wildlife safety and nature awareness to sharpen the senses and cover responses to encounters with animals, along with foundations of outdoor risk management. The afternoon focuses on firemaking by learning tree identification and selecting effective tinder, kindling, and cooking wood. Evening time is devoted to waterproofing tents, setting tarps, hanging hammocks, practicing knots, and sharing campfire songs and stories. Tuesday explores bird language to quickly recognize species and interpret their communications. Tracking follows in the afternoon by identifying prints and signs in the wildlife preserve, working through a tracking scenario with cut outs to strengthen interpretation, and practicing animal forms to understand how tracks are laid. After dark, the group heads into the park for a real tracking foray. Wednesday centers on wilderness survival and the 10 essentials, including starting a shelter that can be slept in the following night. Navigation takes over in the afternoon with natural techniques and compass skills using the Wolf Camp 4 Step Method, followed by an evening navigation challenge and campfire knife skills. Thursday turns to wild edible plants with honorable harvesting, how to find regional favorites, and preparing at least one. The afternoon focuses on wild plants and garden herbs for natural first aid, processing at least one remedy for a kit. Nighttime brings more work on survival shelters and becoming comfortable in the dark. Friday highlights nature artistry and traditional crafts, using plants and animals to make rope, baskets, musical instruments, natural paints and dyes, and to process sinew, bone tools, rawhide, and leather. The camp wraps up with a trade circle and closing presentations. Instruction is provided by leaders with years of Outdoor Leadership and Search and Rescue experience. Camp Directors Kim and Chris Chisholm teach groups and oversee professionally trained staff, maintaining an average six to one student to instructor ratio that supports attentive guidance and meaningful outdoor learning.

Gentle gongs, bronze and crystal singing bowls, chimes, harmonizing vocals and other instruments weave soft tones and resonant vibrations that encourage the release of stress and physical tension. Sessions open with a brief overview of the month’s theme and intentions, then flow into a therapeutic vibrational concert. A personal eye mask and a bespoke essential oil scent are part of the experience, and there is time afterward for hot tea, chocolate and optional group sharing. There is no exercise or large movement involved. Seating and comfort options include VIP Gravity Chairs that recline to reduce pressure on back, hip and knee joints, XL VIP Gravity Chairs with a roomier fit and a slightly deeper recline, bring your own yoga mat spaces for those who prefer the floor, and traditional theater seats. VIP chairs include a lightweight blanket to use during the session along with a self care goody bag. Bring your own mat spaces also include a goody bag and are available on a first come, first pick basis. Theater seating is upright with neighbors close by, so compact comfort items like a travel neck pillow or blanket are welcome, and these seats are offered first come, first pick by rows. Theater seats do not include a goody bag, though one can be added during checkout. The monthly self care goody bag includes an eye mask, a small dropper bottle of that month’s custom essential oil blend, an individually wrapped dark chocolate and a collectible charm designed for display in a floating locket. Wear comfortable clothing, avoid caffeine beforehand and bring a water bottle. Comfort items such as a cozy blanket and pillows for head, knee or lumbar support are encouraged. A sudden chill can accompany the shift from fight or flight to rest and digest, so extra warmth can be helpful. Facilitators Cinsy and Kat are professionally trained sound and vibrational practitioners and meditation teachers, certified in traditional Himalayan sound techniques through the accredited Atma Buti Sound and Vibrational School in Boulder, Colorado. Recommended for ages 12 and up with a parental chaperone. Not advised for anyone in the first trimester of pregnancy or for those with pacemakers or other implanted electronic devices.

Animal Planet: Wild Creatures & Habitats Art Camp – Ages 8 – 13

Young artists ages 8 to 13 can dive into a week of wildlife‑inspired creativity at a summer art camp that celebrates animals and their habitats. Designed for kids who are curious about nature and the wider world beyond the farm, the program blends skill building with imaginative exploration. Campers study creatures and ecosystems from across the globe, using what they observe to make art sparked by rainforests, oceans, deserts, savannas, and icy regions. Through drawing, acrylic and watercolor painting, ink, mixed media, and clay, they learn how artists look at anatomy, movement, patterns, and textures to create expressive work. Projects are planned to teach real techniques while leaving room for individual style. Possible creations include bold animal portraits, painted scenes that capture different ecosystems, investigations of camouflage and pattern such as stripes, spots, and scales, and handbuilt clay sculptures that emphasize pose, surface detail, and form. Clay pieces will be kiln fired and made available for pickup after camp. All supplies are included, and comfortable clothing that can get messy is recommended. Pricing options are available at $265 for a half day and $495 for a full day. Early drop off and late pick up are offered as optional add ons.

Lavender Wand Workshop

Explore the traditional craft of lavender wands, or fuseaux de lavande, a practice rooted in 18th century Provence when the perfume trade helped shift lavender from a medicinal herb to a coveted source of essential oil. It is well suited to athletes preparing for Oregon, Seafair, Black Diamond, Lake Meridian, Tri Cities, or any Ironman or 70.3 race. The fee is $100, and capacity is limited.

IN A LANDSCAPE: Mercer Island

IN A LANDSCAPE brings its 11th season to Luther Burbank Park on Mercer Island, where close to a mile of Lake Washington shoreline frames the setting. Large areas of the park are purposefully left natural to protect wetlands and habitats that shelter diverse birdlife and native species. The grounds have a long story, beginning in 1890 as a private school centered on horticulture and hands-on study, later taking the name of horticulturist Luther Burbank. The State of Washington assumed control in 1957, the school moved in 1966, and the land gradually became a public park. The concert unfolds near Calkins Point Sand Beach, reached with a brief walk from parking along the lakeside path. Guests settle on the grass and the small beach, with room to spread out beside the water. In this touring series, natural landscapes replace the traditional concert hall across the American West, featuring pianist Hunter Noack performing on a 9 foot Steinway concert grand. Audience members listen through wireless headphones and may wander, letting the music accompany their experience outdoors. This gathering takes place on the ancestral homeland of the Duwamish and Suquamish peoples.

Explore the luminous, layered possibilities of encaustic collage in a hands-on workshop centered on floral imagery. Using molten beeswax combined with damar resin, participants build soft, atmospheric backgrounds through color, collage, and mark making, then embed dried flowers so they appear to emerge from within the wax. Instruction covers essential techniques such as safely fusing layers, scraping back to reveal texture, and drawing into the surface, encouraging a balance between control and the medium’s natural unpredictability. No prior encaustic experience is needed, making this a welcoming option for painters, mixed media artists, or anyone curious about working with wax in a supportive studio setting. Two class sessions are available.
