Alexandra Oliva, author of THE RADIANT DARK, in conversation with Laurie Frankel (FAMILY FAMILY)

Brick & Mortar Books hosts a conversation as local author and Word Craft host Alexandra Oliva talks with fellow local author Laurie Frankel to celebrate the release of The Radiant Dark. Oliva’s novel begins in 1980 in a small Adirondack town, where new mother Carol Girard sees an unusual light in the sky that is identified as contact from intelligent life eleven light years away. Over the following decades, messages pass between worlds while Carol, her son Michael, and her daughter Ro grapple with shifting beliefs, personal ambitions, and the ties that hold their family together in the wake of a wider universe. Frankel, author of Family Family, offers a story about India Allwood, who grows from an awkward teenager into a Broadway standout and television superhero. When a prestige film about adoption leans on a tragic narrative, India speaks candidly as an adoptive parent and is thrust into a media frenzy while her ten-year-old twins turn to family for help. The novel examines how families take shape and why the truth is more complicated than simple ideas about blood or love. Preordering The Radiant Dark enters readers into a prize drawing. The grand prize is a hardcover annotated by the author along with a The Radiant Dark tote bag, and two additional winners will receive tote bags.

Discover encaustic painting in a hands-on workshop centered on layered wax and floral imagery. Participants create a mixed media piece using molten beeswax and damar resin, building soft backgrounds with color, collage, and mark-making. Techniques covered include safely fusing layers, scraping to reveal texture, and drawing into the wax so dried flowers can appear to emerge from within the surface. The experience emphasizes exploration and a balance between intention and the medium’s natural unpredictability. Beginners are welcome, and the class suits painters, mixed media artists, and anyone curious about working with wax. Two classes are available.

NWBS Presents Green Castles with Catherine Haedrich

Presented by NWBS, this hands-on workshop with Catherine Haedrich focuses on Green Castle, a bead embroidery and freeform beading project built around a focal that echoes the shape of a handheld mirror. The design features a woman’s cabochon with a castle above and a sheep incorporated into the bezel, and the technique mix creates an organic result. It is geared toward beaders with some embroidery experience who want an approachable introduction to freeform work. Participants are asked to bezel key focal elements at home before class, then assemble the piece in class using freeform peyote and a spiral peyote neckband. The class takes place at Providence Point North Community Building. The fee is $65 for NWBS members and $95 for non-members. An optional $90 kit is available and is payable to Catherine on the day of class. The Green Castle stone cabochons are not included, and any sample images are for inspiration. Catherine will have some cabochon choices that suit the project, generally around 22 to 28 millimeters, and sizes or shapes can be adapted with decorative bezels and added elements. Students may also draw from their own stash for auxiliary focals. The kit provides a coordinated seed bead selection in sizes 15, 11, 10, and 8, plus accent bits such as chip beads and two hole cabs, along with materials to build the central picture cab and bezel, Delicas, filigrees, drops, backing, stiff felt, and plastic. Supplies for star shaped bead woven side cabs are included, as well as ivy leaf components and a simple lobster claw closure. The ivy leaves in the kit are gold toned brass stampings at about 14 millimeters, slightly larger than the 12 millimeter leaves in the original sample, with darker and brighter options available. Any repeated element that comes to a point can be substituted if preferred. Finished pieces will vary. Additional samples and small components may be available during class for inspiration. Those working exclusively from their stash are welcome, and sourcing early is recommended. Seed bead packs will be available to help with color planning and to fill gaps, and participants are asked not to pre mix their beads. The project requires pre work, so bezel several items in advance, especially if you plan to use your own materials.

Sanjay Sabha

Sanjay Sabha Live showcases the Carnatic artistry of Sanjay Subrahmanyan in a concert series he conceived and leads. Launched in 2021 as full-length YouTube performances created to keep music within reach during the pandemic, the project quickly built a loyal global audience for its musical depth and careful production values. From that foundation it grew into in-person concerts across major Indian cities, including Chennai, Bangalore, and Coimbatore, and further abroad in Singapore and Australia. Each program explores a broad repertoire with compositions in Tamil, Telugu, Sanskrit, Malayalam, and Kannada. On stage, Sanjay is joined by S. Varadarajan on violin and Neyveli Venkatesh on mridangam. Varadarajan’s expressive, finely wrought lines complement the vocals with a keen feel for raga nuance, while Venkatesh’s rhythmic command brings vibrant energy and intricate patterns that enrich the music’s structure. Together they are fondly known as the Men in White, a trio recognized for tightly knit interplay and an experience that draws listeners in.

The story centers on Amy, whose sixteenth birthday unravels when her two closest friends clash and leave, followed by dangerous bursts she cannot explain. A surly spirit in her mind reveals that she is the reincarnated host of the Shield, destined to oppose the Sword. The Shield aims to protect all life, while the Sword longs to erase it and return the universe to nothingness, a cycle that has repeated for millennia through battle, death, and rebirth. Peaceful by nature and focused on school and her college goals, Amy wants no part in a deadly confrontation. Connor has trained his entire life to be the Sword’s ideal host and to meet his family’s expectations, even ready to die in battle, but meeting Amy sparks doubts. Enemies at first, they grow into friends and then something more, faced with a choice between the fate of the universe and their own future together. The Shield offers a slow burn, enemies to forbidden lovers romance without explicit content.

Sound Bath Meditation

Harmonic Glowing presents the Kirkland Sound Gals for monthly sound bath meditations at their new home, Studio East Theater in Kirkland’s Houghton neighborhood. The series began in summer 2025 in a small office setting and has moved to a larger venue to welcome more participants. This relaxing soundscape journey is designed to ease the mind into a soothing meditative state. Gentle gongs, bronze and crystal bowls, chimes, harmonizing vocals, and other instruments create soft tones and deep vibrations that support the release of stress and tension. The practice involves stillness rather than physical exercise and can help regulate the autonomic nervous system while encouraging connection with inner awareness. No experience is required. Guides Cinsy and Kat are professionally trained sound and vibrational practitioners and meditation teachers, certified in traditional Himalayan sound techniques through the accredited Atma Buti Sound and Vibrational School in Boulder, Colorado. Each session begins with a brief overview of the month’s theme and intentions, then unfolds into a therapeutic vibrational concert. A personal eye mask and a bespoke essential oil blend are provided, followed by relaxed community time with hot tea, chocolate, and optional group sharing. Comfort is encouraged. Wear comfortable clothing, avoid caffeine beforehand, bring a water bottle, and consider items like a cozy blanket and pillows for head, knee, or lumbar support. A warm blanket is especially helpful since shifting into rest and digest can bring on a sudden chill. Seating options include VIP Gravity Chairs that recline to reduce pressure on the back, hips, and knees and come with a self care goody bag and a lightweight blanket to use. XL VIP Gravity Chairs offer slightly larger dimensions and a deeper recline with the same inclusions. A bring-your-own yoga mat option reserves floor space on a first-come, first-pick basis and includes a goody bag. Theater seating is upright with neighbors close by, allows small comfort items like a travel neck pillow and a blanket, and is offered first come, first pick in the designated rows. Theater seats do not include a goody bag unless added during checkout. The monthly self care goody bag features an eye mask, a small take-home dropper bottle of the custom essential oil blend, an individually sealed premium dark chocolate, and a collectible charm for display in a floating locket. Recommended age is 12 and up with a parental chaperone. This event is not advised for anyone in the first trimester of pregnancy or for those with pacemakers or other implanted electronic devices. Woodinville Repair Event

A free community repair event from King County brings volunteer repair specialists to Woodinville Library to take a look at household goods and clothing that need a little help. They will try to fix small items such as appliances and electronics, lamps, vacuums, toys, electric power tools, small furniture like chairs or drawers, jewelry, and textiles. Check-in is handled in order of arrival. Each guest’s first item is prioritized, and second items are considered after everyone’s first item has been seen, as volunteers are available. Repairs are not guaranteed, and the team may decline an item before or during the event based on the type of item, the repair required, volunteer skills on hand, or other factors. For everyone’s safety and efficiency, certain things are not accepted. Please do not bring equipment that uses gasoline, cell phones, tablets, microwaves, items for knife or tool sharpening, extensive reconstruction projects, or major clothing alterations. Green Issaquah: Miyawaki One-Year Anniversary Celebration

A community celebration marks the first year of Issaquah’s Miyawaki pocket forest with the Issaquah Alps Trails Club and Green Issaquah. Over the past year, volunteers planted 880 trees and shrubs and held eleven work parties dedicated to weeding, mulching, and caring for the site. The gathering offers time to connect and recognize volunteer contributions, with cake and light refreshments. It also reflects ongoing progress toward the tree canopy goals outlined in the Issaquah Climate Action Plan and looks ahead to the future of this compact forest. Registration is not required, and street parking is available. To help reduce waste, bringing a reusable cup or mug is encouraged. The Miyawaki method, pioneered by botanist Akira Miyawaki, restores forest cover on degraded land by densely planting a diverse mix of native species to mirror natural regeneration. These small forests can establish quickly, often becoming largely self-sustaining after two to three years, and they can fit on sites as small as about 3 square meters. They have been shown to grow up to ten times faster than conventional plantings, reach around thirty times the density, and support as much as a hundred times the biodiversity. Green Issaquah: Miyawaki Maintenance Event

Help care for Issaquah’s first Miyawaki pocket forest alongside the Issaquah Alps Trails Club and Green Issaquah. This stewardship work party focuses on routine weeding, mulching, and watering to support a young planting that already includes 880 trees and shrubs. The effort supports the Issaquah Climate Action Plan goal of increasing tree canopy to 55 percent, and the work will be led by August Miller. Participants are encouraged to bring their own gloves, with spares available for anyone who needs them. Dress in layers and wear clothing that can get dirty. Closed toe footwear is required, and participants should bring water and snacks. Parking on the street is available. Registration is required, and if capacity is reached a waitlist ticket option is offered with openings filled on a first come, first served basis. Event FAQs are available on the organizers’ website. This project is supported by the Forterra Community Restoration Grant and the Foundation for Intelligent Life on Earth. The Miyawaki method, pioneered by botanist Akira Miyawaki in Japan, restores forest cover on degraded land using only native species to mirror natural rewilding. These compact forests establish quickly, grow ten times faster, are thirty times denser, and can support one hundred times more biodiversity than most planted forests. They can be created on sites as small as 3 square meters and provide cities with a practical approach to building climate resilience. Community participation is central to this approach, from preparing soil and planting to caring for the young forest and watching it mature.

Suzanne Kaufman (WELCOME TO OUR CLASSROOM!) and Martha Brockenbrough (OTIS KNOWS)

Brick & Mortar Books welcomes back local authors Suzanne Kaufman and Martha Brockenbrough to celebrate their new picture books, WELCOME TO OUR CLASSROOM! and OTIS KNOWS. WELCOME TO OUR CLASSROOM!, written by Alexandra Penfold and illustrated by Suzanne Kaufman, follows a class as they begin a new school year. With familiar faces from All Are Welcome and Big Feelings, it highlights the comfort a teacher provides, the excitement of new supplies and classmates, and the way children learn to try new things, work together, and gain confidence. OTIS KNOWS, by Liz Garton Scanlon and Martha Brockenbrough, centers on a bear who does things in his own time. While other bears wake, fish, and play, Otis rests, finds his own fishing spot, and follows his own pace. The story offers a gentle reminder that being yourself, in your own way, is just right. Suzanne Kaufman is the author-illustrator of A FRIEND FOR GHOST and CONFISCATED! and the illustrator of TAKE YOUR PET TO SCHOOL DAY, 100 BUGS!, SAMANTHASAURUS REX, and the All Are Welcome books. Her work has earned honors including the Washington State Book Award, recognition from Bank Street College of Education, ILA Notable Book for a Global Society, and Mathical Honor Book, and has been featured at the Bologna Children’s Book Fair. IN A LANDSCAPE: Mercer Island

IN A LANDSCAPE brings its 11th season to Luther Burbank Park on Mercer Island, where close to a mile of Lake Washington shoreline frames the setting. Large areas of the park are purposefully left natural to protect wetlands and habitats that shelter diverse birdlife and native species. The grounds have a long story, beginning in 1890 as a private school centered on horticulture and hands-on study, later taking the name of horticulturist Luther Burbank. The State of Washington assumed control in 1957, the school moved in 1966, and the land gradually became a public park. The concert unfolds near Calkins Point Sand Beach, reached with a brief walk from parking along the lakeside path. Guests settle on the grass and the small beach, with room to spread out beside the water. In this touring series, natural landscapes replace the traditional concert hall across the American West, featuring pianist Hunter Noack performing on a 9 foot Steinway concert grand. Audience members listen through wireless headphones and may wander, letting the music accompany their experience outdoors. This gathering takes place on the ancestral homeland of the Duwamish and Suquamish peoples.
