Virginia Tech researcher Bill Hopkins and collaborators are working to restore threatened populations through Virginia’s Hellbender Headstart Program, and half of the proceeds from designated ticket purchases will support his research and conservation work in Appalachian streams. Throughout the game, educational tables will be hosted by Hopkins’ team alongside the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources, with an additional presence from the College of Natural Resources and Environment. Between innings, test your knowledge with hellbender-themed trivia.

The setting includes quiet areas to step away and decompress from sensory overstimulation, along with spaces to engage fully and express creativity. Participants range from touring professionals to people who simply enjoy playing and singing, and listeners are welcome even if they do not perform. Plan to park in the lower lot near the lower deck and bring a folding chair, your favorite tunes, a cool drink, and bug spray. Expect a pleasant breeze from high above the city. Start times shift with the season as days grow longer and warmer, and any location changes are shared through the Facebook page. If the weather is iffy, the group will try the Discovery Center first or the picnic shelter behind the Star just off the path. If conditions are severe with thunder, lightning, or high winds, the fallback location is 3rd Street Coffeehouse. Now in its 40th year, 3rd Street Coffeehouse is a volunteer-run non-profit listening room that does not charge a cover. Part of the Cundiff Heating & Cooling Flashback Concert Series, The Broken Hearts bring a heartfelt celebration of Tom Petty’s music. The group was created by Charlie Souza, a former Tom Petty and Mudcrutch bandmate, together with singer and songwriter Shawn Scheller after Petty’s passing. What began as a short-term memorial project soon drew ongoing requests, eventually becoming an official touring tribute honoring the life and music of Thomas Earl Petty. The current lineup features guitarist Mateo Olivo in the role of Mike Campbell, Dave Walker as bassist Ron Blair, Aidan Cain as Benmont Tench on keyboards, piano, synthesizers, harmonica and acoustic guitar, and Chris “Blu” McDonald as Stan Lynch on drums. Original member Scott Lockhart contributes drums, guitar, harmonica, vocals, percussion and live production, while Shawn Scheller portrays Tom Petty on vocals and both acoustic and electric guitars. Earlier iterations included Robin Swenson, Joe Sanders and Scott Lockhart. This concert takes place rain or shine. Children 12 and younger receive free entry in general admission areas. There is no re-entry. Credit cards and cash are accepted at the gate, though some vendors may accept cash only. All American Hauling will call is located at the entrance to the right of the ValleyStar Credit Union box office. For parking, use the Carilion Riverwalk Garage beside Honeytree and ride the free shuttle for a short trip to the front gate, with directional signage to guide you as you approach. You are welcome to bring your own chair, or rent one for $5 at concessions. Nano Crawler Competition (MAMC indoor course)
The competition welcomes nano scale crawlers that can pass through 4.5 inch gates, including models like the Axial SCX30, Redcat Ascent 32, and Orlandoo Hunter. All vehicles compete in a single field rather than separate classes, and any level of modification is allowed. With rules for this scale still evolving, the event will help shape future guidelines. If class divisions are introduced, there will be ample time to adjust setups, and any new rules will be applied loosely while the category is developing. The entry fee is $10. Comfort and setup needs are accounted for, with heaters or fans available as conditions require. Indoor pit space is limited but includes outlets for charging, and weather permitting there is room to stage in the driveway. If the garage door happens to be closed, a quick knock or lifting the door provides access. For parking, please avoid spaces directly in front of the store and do not block either driveway to the garages.

A monthly West Coast Swing lesson and social brings together dancers from the Roanoke and New River valleys, rotating locations between Roanoke and Blacksburg. This edition is set at Carilion Wellness in Roanoke, Studio A, and starts with an all-levels class followed by social dancing. Everyone is welcome, whether brand new or experienced. West Coast Swing is the state dance of California and suits many musical styles, with a playlist focused on WCS plus selections from Latin, Ballroom, and Country. No partner or prior experience is needed. Comfortable clothing and shoes are recommended, avoid flip flops, and bring a water bottle. Venue membership is not required. Admission is on a sliding scale from $5 to $20, with $15 suggested and first-timers free. Cash, Venmo, and PayPal are accepted, and prepayment can be arranged upon request. The event prioritizes an inclusive, respectful atmosphere. Rotating partners is common and optional, dance roles are not tied to gender, and anyone may accept or decline a dance at any time. Unsolicited instruction is discouraged. For safety, check in with partners before attempting weight-supported movements, and keep lifts and aerials off the social floor. Good hygiene is appreciated, including freshly laundered clothing, minimal fragrances, and staying home when unwell. Ask for consent before taking photos or video, and again before sharing. After registering, participants submit a photo of their pet, whether it has fur, feathers, or scales. At the event, each person is randomly assigned another guest’s pet to paint, with friendly tips and encouragement provided throughout. No painting experience is required.
