5th Annual South Texas New Play Festival

South Texas College Theatre and Dance presents the 5th Annual South Texas New Play Festival, a celebration of new writing selected from 30 submissions by a committee of playwrights, theatre artists, and STC faculty and staff. Three finalists receive staged readings directed by a theatre director and performed by actors from the Rio Grande Valley, with a post-show conversation after each presentation. The festival is dedicated to nurturing fresh voices and contemporary perspectives, and also features a workshop production drawn from last year’s festival, a playwrights panel, and a playwriting workshop. Readings are scheduled in the STC Cooper Center for Performing Arts Black Box. The lineup features Ironin’ Man! by Jorge E. Rodriguez, following Don Alex, a former American basketball standout who was deported to Tijuana and now runs a dry-cleaning shop. News of an upcoming rock concert propels him into a quest for redemption as he and his two employees forge a surrogate family, tested by shifting border politics, consumer culture, gentrification along the northern Mexican border, migration, and social media dynamics that can deepen division. Waiting by Donna Kaz offers a comedic look at the pursuit of an acting career. Lucy arrives from the Midwest determined to make it onstage, but her first role is at the Great White Café, where every server is also an aspiring actor. Under a manager hostile to artists, the staff wrestle with whether the adrenaline and showmanship of waiting tables is keeping them from the parts they truly want. Set in a recent era when speaking up about harassment often came at a cost, the play asks if actor-waiters can break out of type. Wise Guys by Gabriel Diego Hernández centers on four quick-witted high school juniors and their overburdened teacher grinding through summer school, pushing one another to the brink. Years later, they look back and try to make sense of what unfolded.

MTG Commander Bracket 3

Take part in an MTG Commander event using the Bracket 3 EDH format. Entry is $5, and pairings will be managed on TopDeck.gg. Top performers receive 125% store credit, with packs or promos added when available. Deck guidelines apply: include no more than three cards from the Game Changers list, avoid deliberate early-game two-card infinite combos, keep extra-turn effects to a minimal count without chaining or looping, and do not employ mass land denial. In short, cheap two-piece combo wins within roughly the first six turns are discouraged, though a late-game combo finish may still occur. A banlist is in effect.

Groups & Meetups

I want to BUY or SELL a house, land, or a 4-plex!

Team Kirby is hosting a casual family night at Peter Piper Pizza for anyone with questions about buying, selling, investing, or building. This is a relaxed meetup, not a seminar, with pizza and conversation while The Kirby Real Estate Team answers questions and helps people connect. Common topics include how to purchase a fourplex, how to assess a home’s value when selling, and what is needed to qualify for a home purchase. General guidance shared by the team notes that credit scores between 500 and 579 may require 10 percent down, scores of 580 and higher may require 3.5 percent down, scores of 640 and higher may allow no employment verification with 20 percent down, and some investment properties may require 20 percent down. W-2s and tax returns may help with qualification. The gathering is free, and friends are welcome. For questions, contact Robert Kirby at 956-279-8829 or Christina DeMara-Kirby at 956-802-0004. The Kirby Real Estate Team is powered by Keller Williams Realty RGV.
