Author Event! Cynthia Weiner's "A Gorgeous Excitement"
Cynthia Weiner appears in conversation with Courtney Denelle to discuss her debut novel, A Gorgeous Excitement. Signed copies will be available for purchase. Set in the summer of 1986, the story follows Nina Jacobs as she tries to keep clear of her mother’s depression while rushing toward adulthood before college. Her mother cycles between days in bed and sudden outbursts, and a sexual mishap makes Nina the subject of gossip at Flanagan’s, an Upper East Side bar favored by young Manhattan society. Feeling like an outsider as a Jewish teen among the polished crowd, she turns to alcohol and pills taken from her parents’ medicine cabinet to get by. There she becomes fixated on Gardner Reed, a charismatic preppy figure, and after cocaine enters her orbit she chases him while overlooking the danger signs. A new medication seems to lift her mother’s darkness, Nina and Gardner grow closer, and the possibility of getting what she wants comes with a steep price. Freud called cocaine “a gorgeous excitement,” and the novel probes how that thrill can turn perilous when attached to the wrong person. Weiner’s fiction has appeared in Ploughshares, The Sun, and Epiphany, and her story “Boyfriends” received a Pushcart Prize. She is the assistant director of The Writers Studio in New York City. Inspired by her Upper East Side upbringing and the 1986 “Preppy Murder,” A Gorgeous Excitement has earned best-of-the-year recognition from The New Yorker, Oprah Daily, Kirkus Reviews, and CrimeReads, and was selected as a Best Book of 2025 by The New Yorker, Kirkus Reviews, and Oprah Daily. She lives in New York’s Hudson Valley. Denelle is the author of It’s Not Nothing (SFWP, 2022), a novel-in-fragments drawn from experiences of homelessness and recovery, with a forthcoming novel titled Real Piece of Work that satirizes the art world and examines image-craft and the hidden costs of living in persona. Her work appears in the Alembic, Tahoma Literary Review, and Southampton Review, and in the anthologies America’s Emerging Writers: An Anthology of Fiction and Night of the Geminids: Fireside Tales. She lives in Providence and credits the public library with her greatest education.

Taking place at Anasa Personalized Medicine, this community breast ultrasound screening is provided by HerScan and offers quick access to imaging that supports early detection and complements routine breast care. Ultrasound can raise detection rates from about 48 percent to 97 percent, especially among women with dense breast tissue, and it can find cancers that mammograms and physical exams may miss. The exam is painless, involves no radiation, and is safe for those with implants. Results are read by a radiologist and no prescription is required. The cost is $295, which includes imaging of both breasts and the underarm area along with the radiologist’s reading fee.

Artists' ExchangeMEASURE FOR MEASURE, Shakespeare's Darkest Comedy
Burbage Theatre Co caps its 14th Season with the 21st century Rhode Island premiere of William Shakespeare’s Measure for Measure, directed by the company’s artistic director Jeff Church and staged at the Wendy Overly Studio Theatre. When Duke Vincentio steps away from Vienna and leaves the severe Angelo in charge, a young man is condemned, and his sister Isabella’s plea for mercy sparks a web of disguises and negotiations. The story peels back layers of hypocrisy, tests ideals of virtue, and weighs justice against compassion. Long regarded as one of Shakespeare’s darkest comedies, it probes power, morality, and the uneasy gap between public righteousness and private desire.

Core functional medicine tools are woven throughout, including a personal health timeline, a systems-based matrix and a symptom questionnaire, helping you see your health story differently and track change over time. Discussion may also include careful use of supplements or medications when appropriate, always aiming to restore healthy function, and, as time allows, an overview of advanced testing such as cardiovascular, genetic and aging-related markers to guide personalized care.
