Pause Party REMIX: Menopause, Reimagined - A Night of Connection, Insight & Support

Pause Party REMIX offers a renewed take on the original gathering, designed in response to requests for more connection, conversation, and support around menopause. It brings research-based guidance together with real-life perspectives, creating a welcoming setting for learning and sharing. Attendees hear from trusted local experts in women’s health, movement, neuroscience, nutrition, pelvic health, and skincare. Lauren Zajac of Balance & Blossom contributes a focus on education, compassion, and whole-woman care. The format is interactive rather than lecture-style. Guided discussions, reflective moments, meaningful connections, and opportunities for creative expression are central to the experience. Small group pods help normalize topics that rarely come up in everyday life, and participants receive practical next steps, supportive tools, and options for deeper engagement. Whether noticing the first signs of change, moving through a significant transition, or simply seeking knowledge, all are welcome. Casual attire fits the spirit, and an optional nod to the 1980s like leg warmers adds a playful twist. The goal is for everyone to leave feeling informed, connected, supported, and less alone.

Will Hoge

Grammy-nominated singer and songwriter Will Hoge marks a new chapter with Sweet Misery, his 15th studio album. The record leans into louder, band-driven rock and roll with big choruses and vivid stories, all while honoring the roots that shaped his sound. To capture that punch, he assembled musicians he trusts to elevate the songs, aiming for a front-to-back listen that rewards turning the volume up. Hoge’s career has included No. 1 singles, Grammy recognition, major-label chapters, and a hard-earned independent path. He championed the Americana blend of American roots styles well before it received its own Grammy category, and he continues to value the long road, focusing on craft and the full album experience over quick shortcuts.

Lucy Kaplansky

Lucy Kaplansky is a celebrated folk singer and songwriter whose path began as a teen performer in Chicago’s folk clubs, then led to New York City and a vibrant circle of artists that included Suzanne Vega, Steve Forbert, and The Roches. Known for her effortless harmonies and frequent duo work with Shawn Colvin, she earned early notice from major press that foresaw a bright future. She stepped away from the fast track to earn a doctorate in clinical psychology and worked in both a hospital setting and private practice, yet her voice continued to surface on notable projects, from Shawn Colvin’s Grammy winning Steady On and Nanci Griffith’s Lone Star State of Mind and Little Love Affairs to film soundtracks like Pretty in Pink and The Firm, along with commercial work for Chevrolet. A return to recording with producer Shawn Colvin led to a signing with Red House Records. The Tide arrived in 1994 to strong notices, and soon she joined Fleming Artists and toured extensively, leaving her psychology posts behind. Flesh and Bone followed in 1996, with Ten Year Night in 1999 and Every Single Day in 2001 both winning AFIM’s Best Pop Album. Her writing and perspective have also appeared in the book SOLO: Women Singer Songwriters in Their Own Words and in Lipshtick by NPR commentator Gwen Macsai. Collaboration has been a hallmark of her career. In 1998 she formed Cry Cry Cry with Dar Williams and Richard Shindell, releasing a widely praised album of favorite songs by other writers and embarking on a sold out national tour, later reuniting in 2017 and 2018 for an anniversary tour and a new single, Cathedrals. The Red Thread explored motherhood, home, and family, while Over the Hills and Reunion reflected on love, joy, loss, and hopes for the future. Her range continued to expand through commissioned songs for La Prairie’s Life Threads campaign and a new trio, Red Horse, with John Gorka and Eliza Gilkyson. That album drew acclaim, topped Folk Radio for months, and led to features on NPR’s Weekend Edition and Mountain Stage. She celebrated family roots with Kaplansky Sings Kaplansky, an EP of songs by her father, renowned mathematician Irving Kaplansky, including live performances together and a nod to 1940s swing. Everyday Street arrived in 2018 with a stripped back, acoustic sound captured in just a few days with longtime collaborator Duke Levine, many tracks recorded in single takes. Last Days of Summer, released in 2022, spans folk, rock, and bluegrass, with Duke Levine, Mike Rivard, and Ben Wittman in the band and harmonies from John Gorka and Richard Shindell. Co written with her husband Rick Litvin, the songs consider family, community, loss, and life in New York City, many written while her family spent months away during the pandemic. The album drew praise from NPR’s Scott Simon. In January 2025 she released The Lucy Story, a collection of mostly unreleased recordings tracing her journey from teenage bedroom tapes to major venues and studios across the United States and Europe. Rooted in the Folk City scene in Greenwich Village, it showcases a wide stylistic palette that touches jazz, bluegrass, traditional and contemporary folk, country, and pop, featuring songs by writers such as Richard Shindell, Robbie Robertson, Townes Van Zandt, John Lennon, Lyle Lovett, and Jack Hardy. The set includes live tracks with Dar Williams, Richard Shindell, and Shawn Colvin, plus demos and outtakes with Larry Campbell, Andy Statman, Tony Trischka, Matt Glaser, and Duke Levine. Her recording of More Than This has drawn millions of streams on a popular Spotify coffeehouse playlist. She has appeared on CBS and across NPR’s flagship programs, her song Guilty as Sin was featured on the NBC series Ed, and her voice can be heard on releases by Bryan Ferry and Nanci Griffith, as well as on the Greg Brown tribute Going Driftless alongside a host of acclaimed artists. She continues to tour with airplay at home and abroad, and Ten Year Night remains Red House Records’ best selling album.

From Village to Battlefield: Pine Grove Mills in the Civil War Era

At Pine Grove Hall, a history program explores Pine Grove Mills during the Civil War, presenting research by Penn State history student Logan Boshart in collaboration with the Pine Grove Mills Village Association. The talk follows local residents who served in the conflict, linking their ties to the village, their experiences while away, and the communities they returned to afterward. Many of these individuals are buried in the Union and Pine Grove Mills cemeteries, where headstones are still visible, some well preserved and others weathered, often accompanied by flags and star-shaped markers honoring veterans. Drawing on maps, historical records, and personal accounts, the program pieces together a portrait of the village and the people who shaped it. There is no charge to attend. The event takes place on the second floor, which is not accessible for those with mobility impairments. While it is not specifically a children’s program, younger attendees will find kid-friendly activities and coloring pages. Reservations are requested to help plan for attendance.

Ordinary Elephant

Ordinary Elephant brings harmony-forward folk to Pine Grove Hall. Crystal and Pete Damore have toured widely for years and have been recognized by Folk Alliance International, including a 2025 Artist of the Year nomination, as well as the International Folk Music Award for Artist of the Year in 2017 for their album Before I Go. Their follow-up, Honest, earned national acclaim. The newest self-titled release pares the sound back to essentials, with intertwined banjo, guitar, and octave mandolin lifting close harmonies and narrative-rich songs. Themes of sincerity, partnership, patience, and gratitude come through clearly. Their work was further honored in 2024 with an International Folk Music Awards nomination for Album of the Year and strong notices from leading Americana outlets.

The Steel Wheels

The Steel Wheels mark two decades together with a new self-titled ninth album that reflects years spent honing their sound in living rooms, listening rooms, clubs, theaters, and on festival stages. After releasing Sideways in 2024 with producer Sam Kassirer at Great North Sound Society in Maine, the band shifted gears and teamed up with producer and engineer D. James Goodwin, who mixed their 2019 record Over The Trees and had recently set up The Isokon in the Shenandoah Valley. Recording there in winter, the group worked live in one room, moving from morning demo listening to full-band tracking, capturing laughter, tears, and a close-knit responsiveness as songs came to life and wrapped by day’s end. The album showcases their full range, moving easily between the folk rock sound they have grown into and the harmony-driven acoustic roots that have anchored them from the start. Energy, wit, and insight sit alongside quiet, personal moments, with arrangements that make space and at times rethink the string band approach. Tracks like Easy question the true cost of life on our screens, Go Back explores how joy and sadness intertwine in close relationships, and Keep On Dancing invites a pause from daily noise to notice what truly matters. After 20 years, the group remains restless, creative, and moving forward.

Puuluup and more

Puuluup brings music that fuses age-old sounds with contemporary imagination. Duo members Ramo Teder and Marko Veisson trace a journey from reviving the talharpa, a traditional string instrument, to weaving in global inspirations and a surreal streak. Their approach draws on Vormsi island leiks, Finnish jouhikko traditions, Sahel blues, and personal memories, with improvisation shaping the moment. The result is a living bridge between past and present, often accompanied by signature choreographic moments that arise on the spot. The Wild Shoats add an alt-folk voice marked by the plaintive pull of fiddles and mountain singing. Grounded in Appalachian old-time, folk songs, and the high-lonesome, they reimagine the music of their home between Morgantown, West Virginia, and Millheim, Pennsylvania. The group won the Neo-Traditional Band Competition at the Appalachian String Band Music Festival in 2023 and released its debut album, Yell In The Shoats, in early 2025. Secret Planet // Natural Information Society @ Manny's // Wed May 13

Natural Information Society appears at Manny’s Live Performance Space in a presentation by Secret Planet and Gorinto Productions. Founded in 2010 by composer and harmonium player Joshua Abrams, the ensemble shapes expansive sound worlds that draw from jazz, minimalism, and a range of traditional practices. Blending traditional and contemporary instruments, the group crafts hypnotic music that unfolds gradually and rewards close attention. Mandatory Reality, released by Eremite Records in 2019, spotlights the band’s devotion to pulse, recurring patterns, and shared focus. The roster has shifted over time, welcoming collaborators such as Lisa Alvarado, Hamid Drake, Ben LaMar Gay, Jeff Parker, Jason Adasiewicz, and Chad Taylor. In 2015 the group partnered with Bitchin Bajas on Automaginary for Drag City. Writers at the New York Times, Pitchfork, and The Wire have praised the work for its nuanced layers, its sense of existing outside ordinary time, and its elemental, physically felt impact. This is an all-ages show.

El Último Sueño de Frida y Diego | The MET Opera Live in HD

The Metropolitan Opera concludes its 2025 to 2026 Live in HD season with a live cinema transmission of Gabriela Lena Frank’s first opera, El Último Sueño de Frida y Diego. This magical realist tale, with a libretto by Pulitzer Prize winning playwright Nilo Cruz, reimagines the Orpheus and Euridice myth in reverse as Frida, sung by mezzo-soprano Isabel Leonard, rises from the underworld on the Day of the Dead to reunite with Diego, portrayed by baritone Carlos Álvarez. The famously tumultuous pair revisit their love in all its passion and pain before offering a final farewell to the world above. Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin conducts the Met premiere staging of a score lauded for confident imagination, vivid color, and fresh individuality by The New Yorker and the Los Angeles Times. Directed and choreographed by Deborah Colker, the new production draws inspiration from Frida and Diego’s paintings. Presented as part of the Met’s award winning Live in HD series, this event brings grand opera to movie theaters around the globe.

Helios

Orpheus Singers present the Northeastern premiere of Helios by Timothy Takach, a work set at the intersection of science, faith, and human experience. The piece moves between order and chaos, reflecting on what we can influence and what lies beyond our control, and suggests that our trajectory can change. Its music reveals a shifting landscape of textures, soundscapes, vocal techniques, and a distinctive harmonic language. Each planetary movement draws character from the mythology or scientific understanding associated with its name. The libretto brings together translations of ancient texts with commissioned and previously published poems by contemporary writers, forming a unified tapestry of words and ideas.

Béla Fleck, Edmar Castañeda, Antonio Sánchez Trio

An uncommon lineup of banjo, harp, and drums takes center stage as banjoist Béla Fleck, harpist Edmar Castañeda, and drummer Antonio Sánchez join forces in a new trio. Fleck, a winner of 19 Grammys, has pushed the banjo far beyond its bluegrass roots through boundary-crossing projects that include the Flecktones, a duo with Chick Corea, and a fresh take on Rhapsody in Blue. Castañeda, a Bogotá-born harp innovator, leads his own groups and has collaborated with Hiromi, Paquito D’Rivera, and Grégoire Maret. Sánchez, a five-time Grammy recipient from Mexico City, is renowned for his work with Pat Metheny, for leading progressive projects like Bad Hombre, for collaborations with Chick Corea, Gary Burton, Charlie Haden, and Michael Brecker, and for composing the drum-set score to Alejandro González Iñárritu’s film Birdman, which received a Golden Globe nomination. The trio presents original music, much of it co-written, and dives into bold improvisational journeys that balance singable melodies, glowing harmonies, and grooves that twist and turn while feeling deeply satisfying.
