Bluegrass Fast Jam

A fast paced bluegrass circle focused on acoustic stringed instruments, this session is geared toward players with solid command of their instruments who want a musical challenge. Expect higher tempos, more intricate arrangements, and singing and picking that aim for advanced bluegrass musicianship. Electric amplification and percussion are not part of this jam. Participants are expected to know the standard repertoire, keep steady time at speed, take breaks with confidence, and contribute strong rhythm or vocals. Less experienced players are welcome to attend to listen and play along, and are asked to respect the flow if requested to sit out on a tune. The aim is to keep the music driving and challenging while still sharing songs, trading breaks, and encouraging one another. Those seeking an all-levels experience can find other jam dates at Velum or around town on the organizer’s events page. The gathering takes place at Velum Fermentation in the South Side, which offers a parking lot and nearby street parking.

TV's Norm presents The Replacements' TIM from start to finish as part of the Live Album Series at Bottlerocket Social Hall. The performance traces the album’s wide sweep of rock and roll influences, moving from the Roy Orbison shaded mood of Swingin Party to the college radio charge of Left of the Dial, with the honky tonk bite of Waitress in the Sky and the Big Star glow of opener Hold My Life. Written in the same era, Can't Hardly Wait also figures into the story of this period. Produced by Tommy Ramone, the record carries its own lore, including talk of a rough mix and the SNL dressing room chaos that led to a ban from 8H. Dive bar rock rings out at Bottlerocket as TV's Norm brings this classic album to life.

Andre Ward

Experience the artistry of Chicago-born saxophonist André Ward, whose sound is steeped in the city’s jazz and R&B traditions and shaped by inspirations like Earth, Wind & Fire and the Phenix Horns of the late Don Myrick. His journey from an after-school music program to Tennessee State University and Berklee propelled him onto major stages, first with Lalah Hathaway’s touring band and later alongside Will Downing and Freddie Jackson, where he spent four years as musical director. Ward’s breakout solo single, a Bryan Adams remake titled Everything I Do (I Do For You), topped the smooth jazz charts and opened the door to a run of acclaimed releases. Feelin’ You, Steppin’ Up, and Crystal City all reached the Top 10 on the Contemporary Jazz Albums chart, and Caution climbed to number one on the Billboard Contemporary Jazz chart. His latest project, AFRICA RISING, reflects his influences with tributes to Earth, Wind & Fire on Secret Place featuring Chantel Hampton and to The Emotions on Don’t Ask My Neighbors, alongside the single Casualty of Love with K’Jon and a distinctive take on Sade’s Kiss of Life. Expect a polished, soulful performance that highlights a celebrated catalog and decades of stage experience.

Calliope Presents Snappin' Bug Stringband

A celebration of Straight Fours marks Snappin’ Bug Stringband’s seventh installment in its Old Time Music of Southwestern Pennsylvania series. Pittsburgh musicians Mark Tamsula, Richard Withers, and Barbara Rosner highlight a regional Appalachian tradition through tunes documented by music historian and Penn State professor Samuel Preston Bayard. Between 1928 and 1963, Bayard collected melodies from area fiddlers and fifers and later published more than a thousand in the books Hill Country Tunes and Dance to the Fiddle, March to the Fife. The music features fiddle and banjo alongside the fife, honoring the heritage Bayard recorded. With Barbara Rosner on upright bass, the group performs a body of work heard at festivals, dances, workshops, and other occasions.

Trivia Night @ Mineos Pizza House (Pittsburgh, PA) Hosted by Picking The Brain Trivia

Put your knowledge to the test at Mineo’s Pizza House with Picking The Brain Trivia. Themes change every week, and teams compete through four or more rounds of seven questions each. Every round includes a bonus question that grows in value as the game goes on. Correct answers are typically worth 20 points unless otherwise noted. At the end of each round the host collects answer cards, checks and tallies scores, returns the cards, then reviews the answers. The team with the highest score takes the round, and once an answer card is turned in the responses are final. This is a true brain game, so no phones or smart devices are allowed. Laptops, tablets, smart watches, and all outside help are off limits, including during breaks. Please do not call out answers, and always submit one clear response per question. The host has the final say on rule interpretations and any disputes. During any Name That Tune round or game, each song clip is played twice for no more than five seconds. Full credit requires both the artist and the song title, while listing only one earns half credit. There are several ways to pick up bonus points. The first team to bring up its answer card can earn a bonus, and everyone must stay seated with no throwing, tripping, or body checking. Each team may select one bonus round for the night in which correct answers are doubled and wrong or blank answers deduct 10 points. Extra points can also be earned for the best or funniest team name for 50 or more points, for winning a tiebreaker for 20 points, and for a perfect score in a round for 50 points. Social media can boost the total as well, with 10 points for a public check-in up to 40 per team, 15 points per selfie with the check-in up to 60 per team, and 20 points per video or boomerang with the check-in up to 80 per team. Posts must be public, tag @PickingTheBrainTrivia and the venue, and include the hashtag #PickingTheBrainTrivia.

The Work of Repair: Letting the Warrior Rest

Many people have moved through life like warriors, staying vigilant, capable, and responsible while carrying more than their share. This offering creates space to set that armor down, redefining strength as integration, attunement, and a more whole way of living. Inspired by the idea that new myths are being formed in our time and that models for an individual woman’s journey have often been scarce, it invites participants to consider the legacy they are actively shaping for those who follow. Designed for those in midlife who identify as empaths, highly sensitive people, intuitives, or neurodivergent, it honors both the gifts and the strain of heightened awareness. Individuals who identify as women or woman-aligned are centered, while welcoming those who feel aligned with this perspective. Through guided exercises, personal reflection, and relational practice, the group witnesses one another, learns to read internal signals, regulate responses, and engage in relationships with greater clarity and intention. It addresses patterns like chronic over-responsibility, caregiver fatigue, and intergenerational dynamics that once provided stability yet no longer fit who you are becoming. The work reaches beyond insight alone, focusing on repair, unburdening, and the creation of healthier patterns. Participants explore themes of shame, guilt, emotional intelligence, and forgiveness as part of developing a more attuned way of relating to self and others. A brief interest questionnaire is part of the process, and a hybrid format may be possible, with additional details to come.

Damon Buxton and more

Acoustic Music Works hosts an intimate acoustic showcase that moves from reflective to spirited, featuring three longtime local musicians: Damon Buxton, Daryl Shawn, and Eve Goodman. Guitarist and composer Damon Buxton studied at Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle and collaborated early on with Windham Hill Records founder Will Ackerman. Steel Magnolias

In a small-town salon in Chinquapin, Louisiana, a close circle of women trade stories, style hair, and share hard-won wisdom. Truvy, quick with a quip and a blow dryer, has taken on Annelle, an eager newcomer uncertain about her marital status. Their regulars include Ouiser, a famously prickly presence who swears she is simply in a long-running bad mood, Clairee, a wealthy eccentric with an unstoppable sweet tooth, and M’Lynn, a community mainstay whose daughter Shelby, the town’s beauty, is preparing to marry a local man. What begins with crackling banter and sharp humor gradually deepens, and when life turns difficult in the second act, these women lean on steadfast friendship and love, revealing a portrait of resilience, heart, and laughter through good times and hard ones. Directed by Sean Michael Barrett and produced by Jess Whittington, the production features assistant direction by Jed Reifer and stage management by Jena Curran with Sydney Shearer as assistant stage manager. The creative team includes scenic design by Rob James, construction by Jeff Way with assistance from Chris Rotz, costumes by Patty Folmer, sound by Jay Weaver, lighting by Garth Schafer, properties by Chris Martin, and hair and wigs by Cara McClaine. The cast features Tonilyn Jackson as Truvy Jones, Sarah Puhala as Shelby Eatenton-Latcherie, Stephanie Ottey as M’Lynn Eatenton, Sydney Mannion as Annelle Dupuy Desoto, Cindy West as Ouiser Boudreaux, and Barbara Harrold as Clairee Belcher. J.R. Carroll and more

Club Cafe hosts an evening with J.R. Carroll, joined by special guests Coltt Winter Lepley and Mindy Miller. Carroll grew up leading a small-town Oklahoma church choir by piano and voice, later taking up acoustic guitar to write his debut EP, Long Story Short. His songwriting resonates with listeners who appreciate artists like Tyler Childers, Jason Isbell, John Moreland, and his close friend Zach Bryan. On the road, he plays keys with Zach Bryan, and when he is home in Tulsa he continues writing and performing his own shows across the United States. Coltt Winter Lepley is an Appalachian folk singer and songwriter from Bedford, Pennsylvania, as well as a published poet, author, and folklorist. Known locally as Bedford’s poet laureate, he blends traditional folk sounds with literary storytelling, landing somewhere between Sam Stone and Wuthering Heights. He tours extensively, averaging nearly 200 performances a year, pairing sharp crowd interaction with vivid songs about cowboys, sailors, prostitutes, preachers, and his own life. Mindy Miller, shaped by Nashville and years on the road, brings timeless songwriting, expressive guitar work, and a voice honed through steady dedication. A regular presence in Music City with residencies at the Nashville Palace, her path has included The Bluebird Cafe and the Grand Ole Opry, and she has shared stages with artists from Reba McEntire to Snoop Dogg to Journey, Michael Bublé, Post Malone, Jamey Johnson, Pam Tillis, and Phil Vassar. She recently earned national recognition as a Top 16 finalist on NBC’s The Voice, coached by Snoop Dogg, noted for raw vocals and fearless performances. Led by vocalist Sam Cieri with John Merritt on bass and Abel Tabares on drums, the group balances raw, candid singing with punchy, nuanced arrangements, stacking big hooks over lush textures. From the first note, the mood shifts and a shared rush of feeling takes over. Cieri formed the band in New York after years spent honing his craft from South Florida bars to Vegas gigs to a Broadway tour, always steering by songwriting. That focus helped shape a sound grounded in honesty, tension, longing, and the courage to voice what often goes unsaid. Since 2019, the band has cultivated a devoted following through creative output and close connection with listeners. Their single What Makes You Sad has drawn close to 20 million plays on Spotify, their take on Tina Turner’s The Best is nearing 30 million, and their overall catalog surpasses 80 million streams. They have also grown a large online community with more than 1.8 million followers on TikTok and over a million on Instagram. Their discography includes a run of self-written and self-produced singles and EPs, along with the 2025 debut LP an Attempt at Romantic. SPIN has highlighted the band’s vulnerability and drive, noting Cieri’s gritty, emotive delivery with touchpoints that recall Bruce Springsteen and Lewis Capaldi. At the heart of the album is a search for connection, a willingness to be brave and unsure at the same time, and an admission that independence and companionship can both matter deeply. After completing a successful North American headlining run in 2025, Nicotine Dolls continue moving forward with another record in the works for 2026. This show centers on honest lyrics, gravel-edged vocals, and dynamic soundscapes that aim straight for the heart.

World Goth Day Party 2026: A Celebration of Pittsburgh Goth

Night Sky Productions presents a celebration of Pittsburgh goth at The Funhouse at Mr. Smalls, bringing together live music, DJs, video projection, and local vendors for an all-ages gathering. Take Me With You blends shimmering synths, distinctive female vocals, lyrical bass hooks, and electronic drums into artistic post-punk and romantic synthpop they have been crafting since 2016. Millie Dread delivers cybergothic antipop as a self-taught composer and producer who builds her sound with virtual instruments, and her live shows are known for a cinematic edge. A Lowsunday listening session highlights the Pittsburgh post-punk and dreampop group on Projekt Records, originally active from 1994 to 2001 and revived in 2024. The White EP, their first new release since 1999, arrived in 2025 and placed at number two on Post-Punk.com’s Best EPs of 2025. The new EP will be played in full over the Funhouse sound system with custom video projection, and Shane and Bobby will be on hand with merchandise. Behind the decks, Erica Scary specializes in death rock and post-punk, is a resident at Second Skin at Brillobox, helps organize Skull Fest, co-runs Play Alone Records, and is known for dancing while she DJs. DJ KellyA brings darkwave selections, has energized Pittsburgh dance floors since her days as a resident at Ceremony in the 1990s, has been booking bands for nearly as long, and as the driving force behind Night Sky Productions organized the night. Bedlamboy has been DJing since 2006 with a focus on post-punk, goth, minimal synth, and 1990s industrial, currently a resident at Dark Room with past residencies including Brutalism and Ceremony. Custom video projection runs throughout the event featuring dark music videos from Pittsburgh bands. Vendors include Play Alone Records and Distortion Productions. A fashion show and an art display are planned, with details to be announced. Admission is $15 in advance and $20 at the door. Curious about what your birth chart really says? This beginner-friendly, six-part course with Pittsburgh-based Hellenistic astrologer and writer Jenny Duceour offers a structured path to understanding astrology from the tradition that shaped modern practice. By the end, participants will be able to recognize common glyphs and chart layouts, explain the roles of the planets and how signs influence their expression, describe the real-life topics associated with the twelve houses, spot patterns of tension and harmony through aspects, link chart areas using planetary rulership, and begin following the Moon to observe how timing activates themes. No previous experience is required. This course is not about Sun sign horoscopes. It draws from the historical lineage that gave rise to them.
