After School Art Kids
Harvey Clarke Elementary is offering a few openings in its after school art program for students in kindergarten through sixth grade, including those who are homeschooled. Participants should be able to arrive at the start and be picked up at the end of the program. Registration is handled online and can be completed at any time. Across a series of sessions, kids explore a wide range of media. Projects span drawing, painting, sculpture, photography, and printmaking, with highlights such as building an acrylic self-portrait over two classes, sculpting rabbit heads with Sculpey that are baked and returned later, and creating copper repoussé. Students experiment with gel plate techniques to make monotype backgrounds, then trace monotypes on top of those layers. Photography sessions focus on composition using small keychain cameras, with the possibility of also trying a DSLR. Hands-on activities continue with needle felting, forming handles from DAS air dry clay while choosing decorative fibers, feathers, and fabrics, then painting the clay and attaching fan, brush, and broom elements. The program also features cyanotype or shibori dyeing, and ink drawings that may move outdoors if the weather cooperates.
