Stay Human: Author Your Mind in the AI Age with Helen & Dave Edwards
As AI becomes part of everyday life, its quiet influence on how people think, work, and connect can be easy to overlook. Helen and Dave Edwards of The Artificiality Institute spent three years studying thousands of people who collaborated closely with AI to understand the human side of that partnership, from the tasks people stop doing to the conversations that move from one another to machines. In this talk, they share real accounts, including a teacher who lost her joy for the classroom, an artist who struggled to find purpose in creating, individuals who grew into possibilities they could not have reached alone, and Helen’s own misstep when she confused AI’s output with her own thinking. The session explains three ways AI is already shaping people, identifies patterns that help some thrive while others drift, and offers clear actions to respond with intention. This is not a technical deep dive, it is a human-focused conversation about living and working with AI. Sliding scale pricing is $0 to $20, and access to a recording is available.

Elements Public HouseBumblebee Season by Eileen Garvin
Eileen Garvin, the nationally bestselling author of The Music of Bees and Crow Talk, leads a conversation about her new novel, Bumblebee Season. The book returns to a small Oregon town and the vibrant world of beekeeping, following Jake Stevenson as his young honey business is flooded with orders while he manages the hives from his wheelchair and struggles to find help as local teens favor waterfront jobs in Hood River. When Flaco López, a young migrant from Mexico, becomes lost on Mount Hood and comes upon Jake’s hives in a high meadow, he takes shelter on the farm and a fragile friendship takes root. Their story intersects with Abigail Plue, a researcher focused on a threatened native bumblebee on Mount Hood, and together they face a push to build a commercial hunting camp that would harm the mountain’s wildlands, home to Jake’s honeybees and Abigail’s bumblebees. With its big-hearted cast and deep appreciation for nature, the novel highlights the strength of human connection and sets the stage for a meaningful author discussion. Ian Clarke’s "Maya" pairs dreamlike lyricism with flashes of virtuosity. Carolyn Morris’s "Forest Over Sea," inspired by the landscapes of Victoria, Australia where forests meet clear ocean, features alto and bass flutes and paints scenes of tranquil woods, soaring birds, and playful dolphins. Tim Hagen’s "Nocturne Lullaby" for alto flute and piano reflects on the folk tune "Danny Boy" in memory of his mother, and Jennifer Stevenson’s "I Prayed for No Rain" appears as an alto flute duet. Yuko Uebayashi’s "Au-Dela du Temps" contemplates time and shifting light, moving from quiet reflection to an exuberant conclusion. Wille HallPetty Thievery
Petty Thievery celebrates the music of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers with a seasoned lineup that keeps beloved songs vibrant while honoring their original spirit. The band features Bret Levick, Alice Di Micele, Gene Black, Jeff Addicott, Nick Kirby, and Mark Thomas. Lead vocals alternate between Di Micele and Levick, with Black’s guitar work out front and a tight rhythm section locking everything together for a faithful rock and roll tribute delivered with heart and skill. Levick co-founded and fronted the L.A. indie band Gifthorse in the late 90s, and his catchy songs have appeared in trailers, commercials, video games, films, and TV shows including Sons of Anarchy, Lucifer, and Shameless. He now writes, produces, and mixes music from his studio in Talent, Oregon, and performs with his original rock americana band LEFT. Di Micele brings more than three decades of touring and recording, an emotive voice, rhythmic acoustic guitar, and 18 releases on her Alice Otter Music label, along with a lifelong love for Petty’s catalog. Black, an Ohio native, came up in Detroit clubs and studios and, while still a teen, recorded with Luther Allison at Motown’s Hitsville USA. His credits include 15 years as Joe Cocker’s lead guitarist, sessions with Tina Turner, and co-writing top 10 hits for Rod Stewart and Heart. Keyboardist Mark Thomas adds piano, electric piano, and B3 organ, drawing on extensive live and studio experience with artists such as Craig Chaquico, Justin Hayward, John Mayall, Stanton Moore, Leon Russell, The Subdudes, Robin Trower, Jeff Pevar, Alice Di Micele, and Bret Levick, channeling the rock and blues feel associated with Benmont Tench. Bassist Jeff Addicott studied popular music performance at Mount Royal College in Calgary and has been an in-demand Oregon player since 1996, appearing with projects including Sage Meadows, Jimmy Pinwheel, Modern Prometheus, Salsa Brava, Q&A, The Wild Goose Chase Trio, Robby DeCosta, and Danielle Kelly. Drummer Nick Kirby has toured with Alice Di Micele & Force of Nature, Jah Sun & the Rising Tide, and Danielle Kelly Soul Project. Encouraged early by his father, guitarist Sonny Boy Kirby, he has played since childhood, also sings, and plays bass and guitar. He originally held the bass role in Petty Thievery and has returned to the band. Expect a set that salutes these iconic songs with care, fidelity, and the collective experience of lifelong professionals.

Black Butte RanchThe Montvales and Creekbed Carter Hogan
The Montvales appear alongside Creekbed Carter Hogan for a night centered on rich storytelling and close harmonies. Knoxville natives Sally Buice and Molly Rochelson began by singing on Market Square, learning their craft among Elvis lookalikes and musical saw players while shaping bold harmonies and a sharp eye for life around them. They continue to tour with songs that live on the wilder edge of country, writing about everything from heartbreak to gentrification to abortion rights and drawing listeners in with seasoned blend and near-telepathic interplay. Their debut, Heartbreak Summer Camp, was recorded at home in 2020, a spare, DIY folk set tracing their journey from their teens through their mid twenties. Seeking a bigger sound, they followed with Born Strangers at Sean Sullivan’s Tractor Shed Studio in Goodlettsville, produced by Nashville mainstay Mike Eli LoPinto, known for work with Chris Stapleton and as producer of Emily Nenni’s On the Ranch. That album built a devoted following and received attention from outlets like Holler, American Songwriter, and Twangville. The duo has shared stages with Willy Tea Taylor and the Fellership, The Local Honeys, James McMurtry, and Mama’s Broke, and has appeared at Healing Appalachia and the Old Quarter Songwriter Festival. In 2025 they partnered with Free Dirt Records to release the single Loud and Clear, with hints of more music on the way.

American Legion ParkKids Studio! Sound & Color: Jazz-Inspired Mixed Media Camp
A creative camp invites young artists ages 7 to 12 to explore how sound and feeling become visual art. Inspired by jazz and the Abstract Expressionist movement, participants listen to instrumental music, capture rhythm and movement with quick gesture drawings, and study how color can convey emotion and how abstract shapes and marks express ideas. Using these explorations as a springboard, they build mixed media collages that translate music into layered compositions with drawing materials, paint, textured papers, and other elements. Along the way, they practice mixing materials and techniques, experiment with abstraction, and talk about how their artistic choices connect to the sounds and emotions that sparked them. Featured figures for inspiration include Romare Bearden, Miles Davis, Robert Thompson, Alma Woodsey Thomas, and Lee Krasner. All materials are provided. Families registering two or more participants can receive 10 percent off with code JAZZ10. Please send a snack and clothes that can get a little messy. Enrollment is limited to 10 students per session.
