Book Binding: Make Your Own Journal

Learn to build your own hand-sewn journals in a hands-on bookbinding workshop that turns blank materials into functional keepsakes for ideas, reflections, sketches, and intentions. Participants are guided through core techniques from start to finish, exploring how a book is constructed, the tools used in the craft, and straightforward, versatile binding structures. The class is designed with flexibility in mind and encourages individual expression. All tools and materials are provided. Bringing special papers, ephemera, or meaningful items to incorporate is welcome but completely optional. Accessibility needs can be accommodated with advance notice to the instructor. Instructor Nick is a multidisciplinary artist with a focus on printmaking and book arts. Dizgo & Mamasboy at The Domino Room | 6.27

Midtown Events presents Dizgo at The Domino Room in Bend with special guest Mamasboy. This is an all-ages show, and tickets are available, including a limited four-pack offer with four for the price of three. Dizgo began with attic jam sessions between childhood friends Andrew Pickel and Kevin Hinnefeld, the band name coming to Hinnefeld in a dream just before their first gig. With Jake Evatt on keys and vocals and Justin Clark on drums, the Bloomington-based quartet has grown into a prominent touring act. Their music fuses the exploratory edge of jamtronica with tight funk rhythms, soulful warmth, vibrant guitar work, analog synth layers, and the colorful swirl of psychedelic rock. Live sets lean into immersive journeys with intricate compositions and extended improvisation, creating a dance floor that feels both energetic and reflective. Notable appearances include Peach Music Festival, Summer Camp, Secret Dreams, Domefest, and Sonic Bloom, along with club and amphitheater dates supporting Goose, George Clinton and Parliament Funkadelic, lespecial, Dogs in a Pile, Pigeons Playing Ping Pong, and more. The 2024 studio album Melt distills their guiding idea that when everything locks in, the band and audience move together as one, trading energy in a continuous loop. From intimate rooms to large festival stages, Dizgo shapes a communal experience where genre boundaries loosen and each song invites a deeper dive.

Healing the Land Teaches Us Who We Are, Dr. Maceo Carrillo Martinet

Dr. Maceo Carrillo Martinet, a restoration ecologist, appears in a bookstore livestream to explore his book Healing the Land Teaches Us Who We Are: How Indigenous Cultural Resistance Can Restore the Earth, Recover Community, and Create Sustainable Futures. Rooted in Indigenous wisdom and a four element framework, the conversation centers on how caring for ourselves and caring for the living Earth are inseparable. Drawing on the work of scholars such as Robin Wall Kimmerer and Jessica Hernandez, Martinet highlights climate solutions already practiced by communities around the world and explains how Indigenous science represents sophisticated systems of engineering, science, and philosophy that were suppressed by colonial powers. The discussion invites participants to re-member, practice, and defend Earth-based ways of knowing that sustain community and biodiversity. Martinet brings two decades of experience co-creating and implementing community-based restoration and education projects, including long standing work with the Partners for Fish and Wildlife Program supporting private landowners, Tribes, Cities, and Counties in enhancing ecological health. His background spans the U.S. southwest and overseas, advisory roles in water conservation and environmental education, and university teaching on watershed and community restoration. Admission is $5 for general entry or available with a book purchase.

The husband-and-wife pair earned top honors at the Rocky Mountain Songwriter Contest, appeared on NPR’s Mountain Stage with Kathy Mattea, and has ties to the Kansas City Chiefs national anthem. Their third album, Three, explores themes of sorrow, love under strain, and even ventures into space. Mastered by Dave McNair, known for work with Shovels & Rope and Lauren Daigle, the record assembles performances captured live on the road in 2024 to reflect the duo’s onstage energy. Lee Zimmerman of Goldmine Magazine has praised their honest, emotionally rich, homespun sound, noting that the songs speak for themselves and underscore the high bar the duo has set.

History Pub - Women Lawyers in Oregon: 140 Years of Success, Synergy, and Surprises

Presented by McMenamins and the Deschutes Historical Museum, this History Pub program explores 140 years of women in Oregon’s legal community. The talk traces the journey from the late 19th century to today, featuring pioneers who built careers through paths that were uncommon for their time. It examines the rise of women’s professional networks and the momentum created through statewide collaboration, leading to greater visibility and notable achievements, including service on the bench. The discussion also looks at persistent challenges and the work underway to advance lasting progress for women and others from underrepresented groups in the profession. Trudy Allen, a retired attorney and historian for the Oregon Women Lawyers Foundation since 1999, shares insights from decades of research. Admitted to the Oregon State Bar in 1982, she connected with several early women lawyers and set out to preserve their stories. Since the mid 1980s she has written for legal publications, documenting trends in admissions to practice and judicial service.

The Beaver Den - Beaver Book Club

Each month, this group chooses a published research paper about beavers to read, analyze, and discuss. Beavers shape ecosystems in many ways, and this conversation turns to their connection with Oregon’s two native freshwater turtle species, both of which are declining and listed as Species of Greatest Conservation Need in the state. In a study released this year, researchers combined field surveys with water temperature measurements to rank habitat quality at seven beaver-impounded ponds and seven control ponds in the Portland area. The discussion explores whether summer water temperatures are cooler in beaver ponds and whether turtles gain advantages from habitats influenced by beavers. The focal paper is a Journal of Wildlife Management article by R. N. Krige, L. Guderyahn, K. Holzer, and C. D. Rivera on beaver effects on habitat availability for two native turtle species, article e70196.

Smoker Dad & Family Worship Center

Two powerhouse acts share the bill as Smoker Dad and Family Worship Center bring contrasting yet complementary sounds. Smoker Dad, a Seattle six-piece that fuses country grit with rock-and-roll bite, is led by vocalists and guitarists Trevor Conway and Chris King. Their songs lean into pedal steel textures, and their second album, Hotdog Highway, arrived in 2024 on Forest Ray Records. Family Worship Center channels a communal rock-and-soul energy born in Nashville and reborn in Portland. Guided by songwriter and keyboardist Andy Krissberg, the group took its name from an unusual, cult-leaning text found during a cross-country field-recording journey... a spark that evolved into a groove-centered, spirit-lifting live experience. Their debut EP, Sunday A.M., produced by Grammy winner Eddie Spear, introduced players with connections to The Band, Ringo Starr, and Deer Tick. The 2023 full-length Kicked Out of the Garden, created with producer Cameron Spies across Portland, Philadelphia, and Ukraine, spent eight weeks on the NACC 200 and led to spots on NPR’s Live Wire Radio and several year-end lists. Expect 1970s swagger, Leon Russell-style piano gospel, Southern rock roots, horns, rich harmonies, and a revival feel shaped for the here and now, with praise from KEXP’s Troy Nelson and The Portland Mercury underscoring the band’s onstage fire.

The experience opens with ceremony to set intentions and create a strong container for connection, followed by facilitators Andrew and Monica sharing the Drumming Sounds evidence based group drumming protocol that has been applied in corporate wellness, healthcare, treatment centers, and community environments. Hands on creation continues with building a personal frame drum alongside guidance in holding sacred circles and leading transformational gatherings. An evening sound medicine journey features gongs, chimes, Tibetan singing bowls, Native American flutes, chanting, and sacred sound vibration to support relaxation, emotional release, nervous system regulation, and deep inner connection. The final sessions focus on facilitation skills, movement, and integration, including EMOTE, which stands for Energy Moving Out Through Expression. Participants can work with the frame drum they crafted as a tool for expression, release, and transformation. Andrew and Monica will also offer a talk at Unity Community of Central Oregon centered on transformation and spiritual journey.

Free Your Authentic Voice: a Throat Chakradance™ with Lynette Ruppert

At Hanai, a Chakradance session centered on the throat chakra invites anyone who sometimes holds back their words to explore authentic expression through guided music and movement. This energy center relates to truth, communication, and being known, and when it tightens, speaking up can feel risky and needs can go unspoken. With gentle facilitation, the practice offers room for your voice to unfold at your own pace so sharing can feel easier, steadier, and less restricted. It is a warm space to reconnect with the sense that your voice matters. The session is led by Lynette Ruppert, a certified Chakradance facilitator who has supported the Bend community for more than 20 years through massage, intuitive guidance, and holistic healing. She brings body-based awareness, intuitive support, and a grounded presence to create a safe, judgment-free environment where participants can move and feel without pressure. No dance background is required, and all are welcome as they are. Pricing is pay what you can at $45, $50, or $55, and capacity is limited. Participants often leave feeling lighter, more connected, and more like themselves.

Garret T. Willie

Garret T. Willie channels deep blues and rock with grit, heart, and soul. His second album, Bill’s Café, takes its name from his grandfather’s place in Alert Bay, British Columbia, and was made in Nashville with Grammy winner Tom Hambridge. Written across late nights, long drives, and studio sessions, the record leans into stories of love, loss, addiction, and ambition with a powerful voice and unadorned, virtuosic guitar work that brings timeless traditions forward. At 25, he has already built a reputation on stage for intensity and showmanship. He is known to break into behind-the-head solos or step into the crowd, turning performances into surges of high voltage energy. His debut, Same Pain, co-written with Parker Bossley, earned praise around the world, including spins on BBC Radio 2, Top 20 positions in the UK and the US, two nominations at the Western Canadian Music Awards, and a Best New Touring Artist nod at the Canadian Live Music Industry Awards. Kids Studio! Sound & Color: Jazz-Inspired Mixed Media Camp

A creative camp invites young artists ages 7 to 12 to explore how sound and feeling become visual art. Inspired by jazz and the Abstract Expressionist movement, participants listen to instrumental music, capture rhythm and movement with quick gesture drawings, and study how color can convey emotion and how abstract shapes and marks express ideas. Using these explorations as a springboard, they build mixed media collages that translate music into layered compositions with drawing materials, paint, textured papers, and other elements. Along the way, they practice mixing materials and techniques, experiment with abstraction, and talk about how their artistic choices connect to the sounds and emotions that sparked them. Featured figures for inspiration include Romare Bearden, Miles Davis, Robert Thompson, Alma Woodsey Thomas, and Lee Krasner. All materials are provided. Families registering two or more participants can receive 10 percent off with code JAZZ10. Please send a snack and clothes that can get a little messy. Enrollment is limited to 10 students per session. La Pine (Machine) Embroidery Group

The La Pine Machine Embroidery Group hosts a friendly, hands-on meetup that brings together people who love machine embroidery as well as those just starting out, including anyone learning to sew or exploring embroidery machine quilting. Founded in 2009 with its first gatherings at the historic Homestead Quilt Store and now meeting at the La Pine Grange, the group has grown into a supportive community where everyone shares ideas and helps one another. Each session in this three day series focuses on personal projects, informal show and tell, technique tips, and plenty of good-natured conversation, with members pitching in to load and unload machines from vehicles. In addition to creative time together, the group works on service projects throughout the year that benefit neighbors in La Pine, Crescent, and Bend. Jerry's Middle Finger

Jerry's Middle Finger brings the music of the Jerry Garcia Band to life with a close-knit chemistry, soulful vocals, and vivid guitar work. More than a simple tribute, their performances share this songbook with new listeners while preserving the sense of community that surrounded Garcia’s shows, creating a family-like atmosphere onstage. A double live album from Chapel San Francisco captures their approach, showcasing a blend of blues, reggae, Motown, gospel, and psychedelic rock delivered with deep respect and a fresh spark. For many, hearing this repertoire live has been uncommon in recent years, and the band is helping restore it to the stage at notable rooms such as the Great American Music Hall in San Francisco, the Troubadour in Los Angeles, and Garcia’s at the Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, New York. Tickets are $17 to $37, plus an $8 Historic Preservation fee per ticket for purchases made online or through the box office. This fee supports the nonprofit Tower Theatre’s restoration and maintenance and helps preserve a 1940 landmark.

Horse Feathers & Guests

Horse Feathers marks twenty years of Words Are Dead with an evening that brings the album’s origins back into focus. Kill Rock Stars is preparing a fully remastered edition on a special colored vinyl, packaged with a reproduction of the original six track demo CD and a foil stamped LP jacket. The music at the heart of this gathering looks to the debut for its compass, offering a chance to hear where it began while acknowledging how far it has traveled. The current ensemble features Justin Ringle on guitar, vocals, and banjo, Nathan Crockett on violin and saw, Halli Anderson of River Whyless on violin and vocals, Kati Claborn of Blind Pilot on banjo, vocals, and clarinet, and Luke Ydstie, also of Blind Pilot, on bass, cello, and vocals. With guests, they shape focused dynamics and nuanced arrangements that capture the debut’s intimacy without locking it in place. Across albums like House With No Home, Thistled Spring, Cynic’s New Year, and Appreciation, the group widened its sound while keeping the quiet center of Justin Ringle’s songwriting, which prizes clarity of feeling over flash. This occasion reflects that continuity. It feels more like a continuation than a retrospective, a reminder that some albums seem timeless and wait for the right moment to resonate anew.
