Bright Series: Sam Robbins

Part of the Bright Series, Sam Robbins shares songs that quietly draw listeners in. A New England based, nationally touring singer-songwriter often characterized as an old soul, his work recalls James Taylor and Jackson Browne while staying rooted in a contemporary approach. He has expanded his audience through steady touring, sharing stages with Jason Mraz and David Wilcox, and performing at Kerrville, Falcon Ridge, and the Philadelphia Folk Festival. His latest album, So Much I Still Don’t See, produced by Seth Glier and recorded live in a Springfield, Massachusetts church, focuses on voice and acoustic guitar with gentle accompaniment that supports the songs. Raised in New Hampshire and shaped by 1970s songwriters, he writes with close-up detail that grows into a wider sense of place and perspective. A Berklee College of Music graduate who spent several years in Nashville before returning to the Northeast, he now plays more than 200 shows a year in listening rooms and festivals around the country. His evolving fingerstyle guitar work includes his first original instrumental, and his involvement with Music Therapy Retreats, helping veterans turn their stories into songs, continues to inform the depth of his writing.

The Seldom Scene

For over half a century, The Seldom Scene has influenced the direction of modern bluegrass. Beginning in 1971, the group earned its name by blending bedrock bluegrass with a wide-ranging repertoire, giving songs from beyond the tradition the same careful attention as the classics. That spirit, once uncommon, helped pave the way for the broad mix of influences heard in the music today. The current lineup features Lou Reid on guitar and mandolin, Ronnie Simpkins on bass, Ron Stewart on banjo and fiddle, Fred Travers on dobro, and Clay Hess on guitar. Their sound is grounded and precise, built on thoughtful arrangements, clear vocals, and the easy musical conversation that comes from years of playing together. Across the decades they have remained a steady presence, folding classic country, folk, and original material into bluegrass while keeping its heart intact.

Nāda Yoga – A Meditative Listening Practice

Experience Nāda Yoga as a contemplative practice where sound guides awareness inward. Yoga teacher and musician Kasia leads with the all-women Rev_Quartet, offering a journey through written pieces and spontaneous sound textures that invite attention to both the world around you and the quiet within. Through breathwork, sound-based meditation, and group chanting, the session nurtures deep listening, connection, and ease. Participants may rest, move, or simply let the music hold them in a welcoming communal setting. A sliding scale contribution of $45, $55, or $65 per person supports the musicians. Kasia came to yoga while completing a Master’s in Violin Performance, initially seeking support for the physical demands of intensive practice. Her interest grew into a wider study of yoga’s philosophy and way of life. After a 200-hour training at JAI Yoga School and guidance from teachers such as Rod Stryker, Elena Brower, and Jon Kabat-Zinn, she now blends music and yoga, grounded in the understanding that steady practice is what teaches. Rev_Quartet is a recently formed string ensemble with members from Poland, New Zealand, and upstate New York, united by a belief in music as a path to human connection. Individually, the musicians have performed at venues including Carnegie Hall, the Berlin Philharmonie, and the Elbphilharmonie. Together they aim to share chamber music in relaxed, welcoming spaces so it reaches a broader community. They first met as Teaching Artists with the Empire State Youth Orchestra and continue to bring music to classrooms, concert halls, and yoga studios in meaningful, engaging ways.

An Evening with Kate Taylor

Kate Taylor brings a lifetime of music shaped by two regions she calls home, weaving New England roots with North Carolina traditions. As the only sister in the Taylor family alongside James, Livingston, Hugh, and the late Alex, she draws on Southern gospel and rockabilly, plus the 1960s soul and rock that first sparked her imagination. She started performing in high school and, at nineteen, signed with Atlantic/Cotillion under the guidance of producer Peter Asher. Her debut, Sister Kate, yielded a charting version of Elton John's Country Comfort, recorded with his encouragement. She went on to make two albums for Columbia Records, Kate Taylor produced by James Taylor and It's in There produced by Barry Beckett of Muscle Shoals and Nashville renown. Years of touring, additional releases, and raising two daughters followed. In 2001 she reunited with Asher for Why Wait! on Red House Records, a project that celebrated a half century since their first collaboration and even brought back the original session players, and it was warmly received by critics and fans. James Taylor told Rolling Stone that the reunion is deeply meaningful and offers a fresh chance for listeners to discover her work. Expect an evening that moves easily among blues, country, R&B, folk, and 60s flavors, mixing beloved covers with her own witty, heartfelt songs, delivered with welcoming warmth and good humor.

Dear Mr. Bennett

John Pizzarelli presents a warm salute to Tony Bennett with a concert shaped by deep personal ties and rich musical history. His late father, the renowned guitarist Bucky Pizzarelli, frequently worked with Bennett on recordings, and John had his own chance to accompany the singer on a radio broadcast with pianist Ralph Sharon and bassist Jay Leonhart. The admiration was mutual, with Bennett attending Pizzarelli’s shows and twice sketching his likeness, including the artwork that later became the cover of the heartfelt tribute album Dear Mr. Bennett, created during an engagement at Feinstein’s in New York’s Loews Regency. The performance highlights music associated with Bennett, interpreted by Pizzarelli and his trio featuring bassist Mike Karn and pianist Isaiah J. Thompson. Released by Green Hill Music to honor Bennett’s centennial, the album captures the trio’s finely tuned rapport, moving with ease from scintillating jazz to radiant pop and tender ballads. The result is both a celebratory nod to a singular legacy and a heartfelt farewell to an artist whose influence spanned generations.

Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center

The program begins with Southland Sketches by Harry T. Burleigh, an American composer and singer who shared African American spirituals with Antonín Dvořák at New York’s National Conservatory in 1893. That exchange led Dvořák to believe these songs could shape a distinctly American classical tradition. Written in the early 1900s, Burleigh’s set of brief pieces carries an easy warmth and singing lyricism, guided by the melodies and rhythms he knew from his upbringing. The music often feels direct and sincere, as if a voice were offering a prayer or unfolding a story. The focus then turns to Dvořák’s Trio in G minor, a dramatic and deeply felt work that already reveals the folk-tinged style that later defined his fame. The evening closes with Beethoven’s Quintet in C major, an expansive and lively piece for strings that balances refinement with striking, adventurous ideas.

Cassandra Kubinski

Songs can travel in unexpected ways. In the early 2000s, Cassandra Kubinski was a young singer-songwriter in Queens, living on baby carrots and Haagen-Dazs while crafting lyrical, passionate pieces about tangled relationships, ambition, family, and even a scuba diver who meets a watery fate. Many of those tunes later reached a worldwide audience through the television series Dance Moms. This intimate concert brings those works back to their roots with just piano and a few talented musician friends. Cassandra shares stories and previews music from her forthcoming album, Dance Moms Acoustic and Lyrical Solos, produced by Jim Mastrianni, who also worked on her Saratoga Sessions EP and the duet "Burn It Down" with Sawyer Fredericks. The album reimagines 9 of the 13 songs featured on the show, distilling them to their essence with candid lyrics, expressive melodies, and the unmistakable voice of the songwriter who created them. More than a look back, the evening offers a window into the creative process behind songs that resonated with millions, while opening the door to the broader catalog that has established Kubinski across regional, national, and international singer-songwriter circles. Expect a relaxed, piano-centered set that includes early material, the stories behind it, lyrical and folky favorites with a touch of kazoo, and a few surprises. Whether these pieces are familiar from television or brand new to your ears, the performance celebrates the lasting power of a well-crafted song and the unpredictable paths music can take.

Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center - Calidore String Quartet

The Calidore String Quartet offers a program that blends expressive warmth with polished virtuosity. It begins with a String Quartet in F major long associated with Benjamin Franklin, a work whose uncertain authorship still provides a vivid window into 18th century musical life. Haydn’s 'Joke' Quartet follows, one of the playful Op. 33 pieces that helped earn him the moniker father of the string quartet. Mozart’s 'Prussian' Quartet in B-flat major, written for the cello-loving King of Prussia, sings with graceful melodies and gives all four players elegant lines. Hugo Wolf’s Italian Serenade brings lively charm, and the program concludes with Wynton Marsalis’s At the Octoroon Balls, a contemporary score woven with jazz, blues, and dance rhythms that lends the quartet a distinctly American voice.

Sean Rowe, a Capital Region songwriter whose career has taken him to stages around the world, returns to Caffè Lena with the resonant voice and poetic craft that set him apart. NPR’s All Songs Considered has noted the formidable power of his baritone, and the Wall Street Journal has described a classic approach that echoes late 1960s Van Morrison and the unvarnished candor of Johnny Cash. His performances can be gentle one moment and surging with power the next. From Mountain Jam to Wilco’s Solid Sound, and on bills with Robert Plant and Alabama Shakes, his presence has connected with wide-ranging audiences. His song 'To Leave Something Behind' reached a broad new audience through the film The Accountant, and a national television debut on Jimmy Kimmel Live brought his intimate delivery to viewers across the country. Rowe recently unveiled 'Burn Baby Burn,' the first single from the forthcoming album 'Good Fiction.' A devoted naturalist and forager, he writes with a strong sense of place, shaping songs that feel both raw and reflective.

Vienna Teng

Vienna Teng’s songs feel like quiet back-porch conversations that linger long after the last note. Her choral work “The Hymn of Acxiom” shows up in media literacy classes and drum corps performances, has surfaced on David Byrne’s blog, and has even sparked flash-mob choirs in government buildings. The restless joy of “Stray Italian Greyhound” has fueled anime music videos and sparked bridge-building political talks. “City Hall” has become a gentle queer anthem for coming-out journeys. The rallying spirit of “Level Up” has carried people through dissertations, first novels, and hard fights with illness. “Harbor” often accompanies first dances and graduations, while “Lullabye For A Stormy Night” is part of countless bedtime routines. Her warm, delicate mezzo has drawn listeners since her 2002 debut, Waking Hour, which led to appearances on NPR’s Weekend Edition and The Late Show with David Letterman and reached the top of Amazon’s charts. Across albums she keeps reinventing the world around that voice, from the string-kissed intimacy of Warm Strangers and the hushed jazz of Dreaming Through the Noise to the eclectic reach of Inland Territory and the gleaming electronica of Aims. She has also composed for the original stage musical The Fourth Messenger. You can hear the adventurous songcraft of influences like Paul Simon and Tori Amos, yet the result is unmistakably her own. Her curiosity extends beyond the studio. In the 2010s she pursued climate solutions through work with the University of Michigan’s Erb Institute, McKinsey’s sustainability practice, and the environmental nonprofit Delterra, while also becoming a parent, first within her partner’s family and later as a birth mother. Those layered experiences shaped her intricate 2024 release, We’ve Got You, two songs designed to be played simultaneously or to stand alone. That love of multi-layering now informs how she connects with listeners. She has cultivated a “music x action” community across the U.S. and internationally, helping people buy their first e-bike, launch green initiatives at work, and even change local clean energy laws. In 2025 she was named one of Grist’s 50 climate innovators to watch. On tour, her venue-based workshops are often described as transformative, energizing, and a welcome antidote to despair. The intimate conversations her music inspires are steadily growing into collective action. This evening centers on a singular songwriter whose artistry and activism meet in real time.

Joan Osborne

Joan Osborne steps into the spotlight with the unmistakable voice and fearless songwriting that have defined her since the multi-platinum success of Relish, moving with ease through soul, folk, blues, and rock. Her recent album, Nobody Owns You, grew out of a time of profound change and clarity, shaping songs that reflect on family, loss, resilience, and how we choose to spend our time. The sound leans warm and rootsy, with acoustic textures, lap steel, and Hammond organ supporting her powerful alto and finely crafted lyrics. The material spans tender, intimate moments and unflinching, socially aware reflections, touching on motherhood, identity, and life on the road. Over the years she has collaborated widely and reimagined classic songs with care and originality, remaining wholly herself in the process. Listeners may recognize names from her recordings, including Cindy Cashdollar, Jill Sobule, Dave Sherman, and Jack Petruzelli, along with backing vocal contributions from Rachel Yamagata and Catherine Russell. Tim Easton

Tim Easton performs songs shaped by a life spent in motion. Born in Upstate New York and raised between Tokyo and Ohio, he first honed his voice while busking across Paris, London, and Prague, a foundation that led to vivid, plainspoken storytelling. Back in the U.S., he recorded his debut, Special 20, in Nashville, then gained momentum with a publishing deal at EMI and releases on New West Records. His breakthrough, The Truth About Us, featured members of Wilco, and Break Your Mother’s Heart earned four stars from Rolling Stone for its strong narrative craft. With more than two decades of international touring behind him, he continues to evolve. His fourteenth album, fIREHORSE, recorded largely in Nashville, is a ten-song set produced by multi-instrumentalist Kevin Nolan with the rhythm section from Lainey Wilson’s touring band, moving through country-blues, folk, pop, and classic rock while keeping his intimate voice at the center. The material draws on time spent as a European street musician, mentorship from Townes Van Zandt and Willie Nelson, and a lifelong devotion to travel. Beyond the stage, his creative output includes over 130 original songs available online, five books of poetry and essays, and hand-painted album jackets that turn each copy into a piece of art. His alter ego, DARK WATSON, also returned with a limited vinyl release. Expect a seasoned troubadour whose songs carry grit, heart, and the close-up detail of a well-traveled life.
