The Crucigirls

From Good Luck Macbeth comes an original parody that reframes a classic tale of toxic popularity within a rigid puritanical patriarchy. With a playful nod to Arthur Miller, the piece riffs on The Crucible and the uproar that erupts when someone is branded a witch. Building on the company’s parody work, it uses satire to explore rumor, reputation, and who holds the power to define wrongdoing.

Cabaret

Brüka Theatre closes its 33rd season with the 1998 revival of Cabaret, set in Berlin as the glitter and allure of the late 1920s give way to the rise of the Third Reich. Guided by the Master of Ceremonies, the story invites the audience to set cares aside while daring songs and scenes reveal the pull of the nightlife and the peril just beyond it. The production is directed by Mary Bennett, with choreography by Alexander Biber, music direction by Bill Quinby, and vocal direction by Natalie Laster Jones. This production contains explicit content. Returning to a title the company staged twenty-five years ago, this staging dives into Berlin of 1929 and 1930 for a raw, authentic look at decadence and danger that aligns with the season’s Wild Card theme. A partnership with Our Center adds a Wednesday performance where a portion of ticket sales benefits the organization. Tickets include general admission and discounted options for seniors, students, and military, along with special pricing for Artist Night and Our Center night. Opening night features a reception after the show with an opportunity to meet the artists. All sales are final and there is no late seating.

Artown Community Mural Reception: Art of Aviation

An artist reception at The Discovery celebrates a community mural inspired by the Artown poster, reimagined by many contributors. The finished work weaves individual sections into a single story about Northern Nevada’s trailblazing character, the evolution of flight, and the spirit of innovation. Attendees can meet participating artists, learn about their creative approach, and view the large scale piece up close as one cohesive artwork. Serving as the entrance focal point for a new exhibition centered on aviation, the mural also builds anticipation for the inaugural Red, White, and Flight drone show. Created from 250 separate contributions, it turns one image into a shared experience and nods to the nation’s 250th anniversary. The project comes to life through the collaboration of three community partners. The George W. Gillemot Foundation supports the original mural artwork to further aviation education and inspire future generations, Artown organizes the community mural experience while welcoming creators from across the community, and The Discovery hosts the reception and presents the completed piece as a gateway to the exhibition. Together, their efforts highlight connection, creativity, and pride in Northern Nevada.

DangerForce5

Surf and tiki energy swells beyond the breakers as DangerForce5 brings an instrumental onslaught to Pele Utu. Hailing from Sacramento and corralled by Professor Jimi Chimichanga, Esq., this supergroup trades polite beach tunes for reverb-drenched intensity that feels like brewing weather. Expect rapid-fire tremolo runs, spaghetti western suspense, and space-age oddities circling drums that pound like open-water surf against a smuggler’s hull. The sound nods to Dick Dale, The Challengers, and The Astronauts, with the interstellar mischief of Man or Astro-Man and the widescreen tension of Ennio Morricone’s film scores. One moment echoes a quiet cocktail beneath bamboo lights, then it flips into a headlong chase along the Baja coast in a speeding boat. No brakes, no lifeguards, no promises, only instrumental surf pushed past respectable volume.

Resin Plank

A participant favorite that concludes Artown, this hands-on Resin Plank workshop is led by studio artist Donna Smit and centers on a calm, creative approach to turning reclaimed wood planks into distinctive layered wall art. Planks are painted with acrylics in advance so they are dry and ready to work with. Participants can build their mixed media piece on an approximately 5 by 18 inch plank or choose a 12 by 12 frame for a different look. Learn to break bottles, vases, and cups to shape a custom design, then experiment with texture and layering using a wide selection of materials that can include crash glass, stained glass, plastics, and vintage jewelry. Personal baubles from home are welcome to incorporate. A clear coat of resin seals the entire piece, and each finished plank includes alligator bracket hardware so it is ready to hang. This class is suitable for ages 15 and up. Online prices reflect processing fees, and in-person registration with cash or check is available for those who prefer to avoid them.
