National Board Certified Art Teacher Mari Beth LaRose leads a series of eight Kids Summer Art Parties at Dare Arts, each centered on a different creative theme. Projects include a wave painting, a glow-in-the-dark marine constellation, Aboriginal-style shark or whale painting, a ship in a bottle, pelican portraits, mixed media sea turtles, a bright flamingo piece, and a playful surfing pineapple. Classes are designed for children ages 7 and up. Space is limited to 15 students, and at least 7 participants are needed for a session to run. Preregistration is required. Every class provides all materials along with a snack and water, and kids are encouraged to wear clothes that can get paint on them. Tuition is $40 per student for Dare Arts members and $45 for non-members, with advance payment by credit card online. Scholarships are available. Registrations cannot be moved to future workshops and no-shows are not refundable. If a cancellation occurs, a refund is offered only if the spot can be filled. National Board Certified Art Teacher Mari Beth LaRose leads a summer series of eight creative parties for kids at Dare Arts, offered on select Wednesdays and Thursdays. Each session focuses on a different project, featuring ocean inspired and playful themes such as Hokosai The Wave, a glow in the dark marine animal constellation, an Aboriginal style shark or whale, a ship in a bottle scene, pelican and flamingo paintings, mixed media sea turtles, and even a surfing pineapple. The fee is $40 per student for Dare Arts members and $45 for non members, and it includes all supplies along with a snack and water. Advance registration and online credit card payment are required. Classes are designed for ages 7 and up, capped at 15 students, and need at least 7 participants to run. Paint friendly clothing is recommended. Known to many as Deacon Claybourne from ABC/CMT’s Nashville, Ward Cameron on Netflix’s Outer Banks, and Cain Ross on Angel Studios’ Homestead, he has also built a strong presence in country music. His independent debut album, Love Ain’t Pretty, arrived in early 2024 with praise from Billboard for a signature rugged country sound, and his songs have amassed more than 35 million streams. Esten holds a 2018 Guinness World Records distinction for releasing an original digital single every week for 54 straight weeks, totaling 54 songs. He has appeared on the Grand Ole Opry stage over 190 times and has headlined festivals and tours across the United States and Europe. In The Courtyard, mixed media artist Lara E. Parks debuts an immersive installation that responds to the elements and encourages active viewing. Light, shadow, sound, and natural motion shape an atmosphere that shifts by day and by night, helping visitors connect with nature and the surrounding environment in a more personal way. The work reflects the emotional rhythms of daily life, moving between vivid, colorful moments and moods that feel more turbulent or stormy. An opening reception in downtown Manteo offers an opportunity to meet the artist. Guests are encouraged to return over time to see how the piece evolves with changing weather. Parks holds a BFA in Textile Art and often pairs fabric with unconventional materials, using printing and slow stitching to tell layered stories. Her practice aims to take textiles off the wall and out of the frame, leading to public installations, stage sets, costume work, and wearables. In recent years she has focused on creating surrounding environments, informed by her experience designing and building sets for local theater.

Sailing camps return to Southern Shores North Marina on Currituck Sound with a three week summer program presented by Hatteras Community Sailing in partnership with the Southern Shores Civic Association. Sessions progress from foundational skills for newcomers, to training that bridges beginner to intermediate, then conclude with an all levels week that includes a regatta. Sailors ages 8 to 12 train in Optimist dinghies, while teens ages 13 to 18 crew on 420s. Instruction is led by coaches with US Sailing certification. Presented by Village Realty, this annual chip-timed road race welcomes walkers and runners with both a 5k and a 1 mile option on the streets of the Village of West Nags Head near the Outer Banks Mall. Parking is available at the mall and portable restrooms are on site. Registration includes a race shirt, a finisher medal, accurate timing, and post-race snacks and refreshments. There is no packet pickup the day before the event, as check-in, packet pickup, and late walk-up registration all take place at the start line on race day. Awards for the 5k recognize the top three overall men and women, first male and female masters ages 40 and up, and first male and female youth 14 and under, with overall male and female winners also recognized in the 1 mile. Entry fees are $45 for adults, $40 for youth 17 and under, and a $40 military rate is available. Fresh is a returning plein air gathering from Dare Arts that celebrates the tradition of painting outdoors. Inspired by open-air practices that took root in 19th-century France, the event invites artists to head outside, find their scenes, and create new work. Artists can register online or by phone. Member entry is $60 and nonmember entry is $70, with fees due at the time of registration. The event will be judged by award-winning representational painter Jeremy Sams of Archdale, North Carolina, recognized for acrylic landscape work. He is a member of the Plein Air Painters of the Southeast and North Carolina Plein Air Painters, and he founded the Fellowship of Plein Air Painters. He will also lead a separate two-day plein air workshop at Dare Arts during the week of the event, with registration opening soon on his website. Completed pieces from participating artists will be shown in an exhibition at Dare Arts, with a free public opening reception held during First Friday in downtown Manteo. After the opening, the exhibition remains on view in the Courtroom Gallery during regular gallery hours.
