Nags Head Woods PreserveBluegrass Island Nights
Bluegrass Island Nights spotlights Michael Cleveland & Flamekeeper at Roanoke Island Festival Park with a performance that celebrates bluegrass roots while embracing bold, imaginative playing. Cleveland’s fiddle leads the charge, shaped by a lifelong fascination with “Orange Blossom Special,” where trainlike sounds, crisp rhythmic bowing, and spontaneous variations fuel the momentum. Raised in Henryville, Indiana, he grew up around old-time and bluegrass at local jams and festivals. His grandparents hosted regular gatherings at the American Legion, and he began on fiddle at age four. At the Kentucky School for the Blind in Louisville he studied violin through the Suzuki method, refining classical technique at school and fiddling at home. Trips to Bill Monroe’s festival in Bean Blossom put him near the genre’s giants, and at nine he performed with Monroe. By twelve, music historian Dave Samuelson was curating Braille-labeled tapes that guided his listening, and in 1993 he played the International Bluegrass Music Association awards show with the Bluegrass Youth All-Stars. After high school he turned professional with Jeff White, then Dale Ann Bradley and Rhonda Vincent. In 2006 he formed Flamekeeper, a band honored seven times as the IBMA Instrumental Group of the Year, featuring Josh Richards, Nathan Livers, Jasiah Shrode, and Chris Douglas. He has collaborated widely with bluegrass greats and stays connected to his Southern Indiana community when off the road. His accolades include 12 IBMA Fiddler of the Year awards, induction into the National Fiddler’s Hall of Fame in 2018, a 2018 Grammy nomination for Fiddler’s Dream, a 2019 Grammy win for Tall Fiddler, the 2019 documentary Flamekeeper: The Michael Cleveland Story, recognition as a National Endowment for the Arts Heritage Fellow in 2022, and a 2024 Grammy nomination for The Lovin’ of the Game.

Outer Banks Brewing StationA Novel Supper
Inspired by the novel The Lager Queen of Minnesota, this immersive, family-style supper celebrates resilience, reinvention, and the connections that grow around a shared table. Steeped in Midwestern traditions and the spirit of craft brewing, the evening moves through a series of courses that honor regional heritage, honest work, and the comfort of thoughtfully prepared dishes. It begins with a generous spread meant for passing and conversation, featuring housemade summer sausage and smoked bratwurst, pickled dill cucumbers, carrots, and pearl onions, an assortment of cheeses including aged cheddar, butterkäse, and triple cream, and warm pretzel rolls served with beer mustard and whipped cultured butter. The second course turns to bread and field-fresh flavors with pillowy Parker House rolls finished with honey butter and flaky salt, a sweet corn and potato chowder accented by smoked bacon, chives, and light cream, and an heirloom tomato and cucumber salad brightened by fresh dill, cider vinaigrette, and shaved radish. A hearty communal feast anchors the experience. Short ribs braised in beer arrive with coffee stout jus and roasted root vegetables, buttermilk fried chicken comes with black pepper gravy and thyme, stout mac and cheese blends aged cheddar and smoked gouda in a rich stout mornay beneath a pretzel crumb crust, and butter-braised green beans are finished with shallots, bacon, and a cider glaze. Dessert brings a comforting trio. Warm apple crisp with oat streusel pairs with vanilla bean ice cream, honey cheesecake bars rest on a graham crust with a cloud of whipped cream, and chocolate stout cake is topped with dark chocolate ganache and a touch of sea salt. An optional craft beer flight is available to complement the menu, with regional lagers, pilsners, and seasonal selections that salute the brewing traditions at the heart of the story. Conversation is part of the experience, and readers can find a 20 percent discount on the novel at Duck’s Cottage.
