Kizomba Classes (6-Week Spring series)

Kizomba RDU presents a progressive six-week spring series at Triangle Meeting Space in Durham with two levels that help dancers grow in Kizomba. Originating in Angola, this partnered dance focuses on connection with both the music and your partner. A partner is not required, since partners rotate during class, and the program is beginner friendly with drop-ins welcomed. The Foundations level is designed for brand-new and beginner dancers and develops core technique, connection, body movement, musicality, and clear leading and following so you can feel comfortable dancing socially. The Improvers level is geared toward advanced beginners through intermediate dancers and usually requires concurrent enrollment in Foundations unless an instructor approves otherwise. It builds on the basics with saídas, combinations, technique drills, and deeper musicality for social dancing, and participants should already be comfortable with retrocesso and vírgula. The series meets weekly during the spring cycle. Pricing for the six-week session is $95 for one class or $150 for both classes each week, with a $150 couples option available for the Foundations level. Drop-ins are $20 for a single class or $30 for both on the same night, and ClassPass users can use one punch per class. Discounts are available for returning 2025 students and bootcamp participants by emailing kizombardu@gmail.com for a promo code. Payments are accepted by credit or debit card, PayPal, Venmo at @KizombaRDU, Cash App at $KizombaRDU, and Zelle using kizombardu@gmail.com. If a payment plan is needed, contact kizombardu@gmail.com. Each cycle is not a strict one-and-done level; new techniques and concepts in Kizomba and Semba are introduced regularly, and students may be encouraged to repeat Foundations across more than one cycle.

John Huston’s THE MALTESE FALCON (1941)

Part of the Retro Noir Film Series in Cinema One at The Carolina Theatre of Durham, this screening features John Huston’s The Maltese Falcon, the 1941 noir that runs 100 minutes. The story follows detective Sam Spade, played by Humphrey Bogart, as he becomes entangled in greed, deception, and murder linked to a jewel-encrusted falcon. Sydney Greenstreet, Mary Astor, Peter Lorre, and Elisha Cook Jr. deliver a standout ensemble that brings Hammett’s morally complex characters to life. As Huston’s debut feature, it cemented Bogart’s tough-guy persona and helped shape the hallmarks of film noir with shadowy visuals, twisty plots, and ethically gray protagonists. Praised by critics and audiences, it went on to influence many thrillers, including the tone and style of Brian De Palma’s Scarface. Tickets are $10 per person.

Joe Troop's Whirlwind

Music journalist David Menconi once called this sound some of the most unusual he has encountered, likening it to a supergroup session where Frank Zappa returns to jam with Punch Brothers and Jens Kruger. At the center is Joe Troop, a GRAMMY nominee, multi-instrumentalist, singer, and songwriter from the North Carolina Piedmont. He co-leads the pan-American folk duo Larry & Joe and founded the Latingrass ensemble Che Apalache. Years spent living in Buenos Aires, along with travels across Latin America and beyond, deeply shaped his approach, and his latest concept album is titled Whirlwind. The performance draws on a vivid range of styles, from Latin jazz and R&B to candombe, bluegrass, classical, samba, and rock and roll, aiming to keep listeners perched on the edge of their seats. The ensemble features Joe Troop on electric banjo with a jazz edge, Rebecca Kleinmann on flute, Bailey Newman on viola, Ramon Garcia on bass, and Gaston Reggio on drums.

John Németh brings a powerhouse blend of blues, soul, and harmonica-driven vocals shaped by a journey that began in Idaho, where a friend introduced him to Junior Wells and Buddy Guy’s Hoodoo Man Blues and sparked the formation of Fat John & the 3 Slims. He went on to front local bands, open for national blues artists, release The Jack Of Harps and Come And Get It with guitarist Junior Watson, and perform in Junior Watson’s band. After relocating to San Francisco, he spent two years with Anson Funderburgh and the Rockets while soaking up the classic East Bay Grease vibe of Bay Area groups. A later move to Memphis led to a collaboration with producer Scott Bomar and the Bo-Keys on Memphis Grease for Blue Corn, which entered the Billboard Blues Chart and was followed by a BMA for Best Soul Blues Male Artist and Best Soul Blues Album recognition for the record. He continued with Feelin’ Freaky, produced by Luther Dickinson, drawing from blues and R&B alongside contemporary hip hop and rock and roll, and joined the Love Light Orchestra for a live recording at Bar DKDC, a 10-piece project conceived with Joe Restivo and Marc Franklin. Searows is the project of Pacific Northwest singer and guitarist Alec Duckart, whose upcoming album Death in the Business of Whaling on Last Recordings On Earth marks a move from bedroom recordings to a wider, more spacious sound created with co-producer Trevor Spencer. His songwriting leans toward folklore and symbolism, exploring the subconscious, the spirit, the shadow self, love, fate and how people care for one another in a turbulent world. Jordan Patterson, a North Carolina-born and LA-raised singer, songwriter and producer, performs an emotive, alternative set shaped by candid lyricism and collaborative craft on her debut project The Hermit, which drew national attention and highlighted her magnetic live presence. This show is sold out. Advance tickets were priced at $21 and day-of tickets at $24, and a Tixel waitlist is available for potential resale tickets.

Breath & Body: Somatic Fitness 6 Week Series

A six week summer series at Durham Friends Meeting that centers on breath-led movement to build real-world strength, mobility, and control. Sessions draw from yoga, martial arts, and floor-based flow as participants crawl, roll, balance, and explore new patterns that develop resilience and adaptability. The aim is to finish feeling grounded, looser, and more confident in how you move. Training attends to the nervous system as much as the muscles, helping ease tension, support recovery, and promote smoother, more efficient movement in daily life. Activities can include animal-style locomotion, intentional breathing to soften fear responses, integrated strength and mobility practice, learning to fall and roll safely, extended floorwork, focused nervous system conditioning, playful movement games, and partner-based drills. Guidance is provided by Pasquale Antonio of Jiyu Holistic Wellness and NC Systema, a Durham-based practitioner with more than twenty years of experience across martial arts, yoga, dance, bodywork, and personal training. His approach blends Eastern bodywork traditions with practical movement and health coaching to help reduce pain, improve mobility, and build durable, adaptable bodies. He has taught martial arts and yoga professionally for over a decade. All levels are welcome, no prior experience required, and each class offers something new.

Kizomba Classes (6-Week Spring series)

Kizomba RDU hosts a progressive six-week spring series at Triangle Meeting Space in Durham, offering two levels designed to grow social dance skills. The Foundations track (Kizomba I) welcomes brand-new and beginner dancers and builds confident movement through technique, connection, musicality, body movement, and lead-follow fundamentals. The Improvers track (Kizomba II) is intended for advanced beginners to intermediate dancers and is typically taken alongside Foundations unless a teacher approves otherwise. It develops saídas, combinations, focused technique drills, and deeper musicality for social dancing, and participants should already be comfortable with retrocesso and vírgula. Partners are not required, as rotations ensure everyone has a chance to dance. The series is beginner friendly and also allows drop-ins. Pricing for the full six-week session is $150 for both classes, $95 for a single class, and $150 for a couples option in Foundations. Drop-ins are $30 for both classes or $20 for one class, and ClassPass users can use one punch per class. Discounts are available for returning 2025 students and bootcamp participants. Registration is handled online, and payments can be made by credit or debit card, PayPal, Venmo, Cash App, or Zelle. Each cycle introduces fresh material rather than a rigid level system, and students may be encouraged to repeat Foundations to support well-rounded Kizomba and Semba social dancing. Originating in Angola, Kizomba centers on connection between partners and the music, creating a warm, grounded dance experience.

Flyte and more

Presented by andmoreagain, Flyte brings the Between You and Me Tour to Motorco Music Hall in Durham with Samantha Crain. Flyte centers on English songwriters Will Taylor and Nick Hill, collaborators since school who later settled in Hackney, London. With literary roots in their songwriting and a name that nods to Sebastian Flyte from Evelyn Waugh’s Brideshead Revisited, they have built a reputation across three celebrated albums. The Loved Ones, made with Burke Reid in the Australian outback, wove carefully crafted stories with ambitious harmonies and was named Best British debut of the year by the Sunday Times. The second album, This Is Really Going To Hurt, created in Los Angeles with producer Andrew Sarlo, shifted toward a simpler, more confessional sound focused on the aftermath of breakups. They reunited with Sarlo at London’s Konk Studios for a pared back self-titled third record inspired by Taylor’s relationship with artist Billie Marten, featuring contributions from Laura Marling, Bombay Bicycle Club, Madison Cunningham, and M Field. Samantha Crain is a Choctaw-American singer, songwriter, film composer, and producer from Oklahoma. A two-time Native American Music Award winner, she blends folk with the textures of country rock and college indie. Her most recent album, A Small Death, arrived on Communion’s Real Kind Records to widespread praise, with songs receiving frequent play on 6music. Over the past decade she has toured extensively in the United States and abroad, presenting richly arranged band performances as well as intimate solo sets, and has toured with First Aid Kit, Neutral Milk Hotel, Lucy Rose, The Avett Brothers, The Mountain Goats, and others. Advance tickets are $25 and are $28 on the day of the show. Tickets are on sale now.

Retro Silents Film Series

At The Carolina Theatre of Durham, this series spotlights silent-era treasures in Cinema One on certain Wednesdays, with tickets priced at $10 per person. The program ranges from a fresh 4K restoration of Paul Leni’s The Cat and the Canary, where a reading of a long-ago will in a crumbling mansion sparks greed and fear as an escaped patient stalks the night, to Rupert Julian’s The Phantom of the Opera, featuring Lon Chaney haunting the Paris Opera amid masked balls, hand-colored moments, and lavish spectacle. Action and comedy collide in Buster Keaton and Clyde Bruckman’s The General, a Civil War chase that piles audacious stunts and stone-faced humor into a high-speed pursuit. F. W. Murnau’s Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans follows George O’Brien and Janet Gaynor through a tale of temptation, reconciliation, and visually daring camerawork that turns emotion into movement and light. William A. Wellman’s Wings climbs into the cockpits for World War I dogfights, charting friendship, rivalry, and romance with aviation sequences that earned the first Academy Award for Best Picture. The season also features Fred Newmeyer and Sam Taylor’s Safety Last!, where Harold Lloyd’s nerve and comic timing fuel iconic skyscraper set pieces, clock-face suspense, and laugh-out-loud ingenuity. Together these screenings highlight the suspense, spectacle, romance, and invention that made silent films timeless on the big screen.

Olive Vox, the alternative rock project from Mansfield, Texas brothers Parker and Caden Shea, draws from across the genre with echoes of bands like Nirvana, Cage the Elephant, and Foo Fighters. Since beginning to release music in 2021, they have built a large following, toured across the country, and earned a Texas reputation for high energy, mosh-ready performances, sharing stages with artists such as Ty Segall at Levitation Austin and Puddle of Mudd. Lilly Flower showcases her first full-length project, created in her childhood bedroom in North Carolina, weaving angsty yet airy vocals with shimmering synths and fuzzy shoegaze guitars touched by alt and classic rock influences. The First Wives Club & Soapdish

The Retro Film Series brings a double feature to The Carolina Theatre of Durham, pairing Hugh Wilson’s The First Wives Club, celebrating its 30th anniversary, with Michael Hoffman’s Soapdish. Tickets are $12 per person. The First Wives Club (PG, 1996, 102 minutes) reunites Bette Midler, Goldie Hawn, and Diane Keaton as three longtime Manhattan friends who have all been left for younger partners. They transform heartbreak into expertly plotted, witty revenge, proving they set their own terms. Soapdish (PG-13, 1991, 97 minutes) peeks behind the scenes of daytime television. Sally Field stars as Celeste Talbert, a veteran soap icon facing a ruthless challenge from Montana Moorehead, while an ensemble that includes Kevin Kline, Whoopi Goldberg, Carrie Fisher, Elisabeth Shue, and Robert Downey Jr. fuels the chaos. The result is quick-fire satire and escalating schemes in a world obsessed with fame and image.

MINT FIELD w/ Big Mistake at The Pinhook

Presented by andmoreagain, this show at The Pinhook pairs Mexico City’s Mint Field with Raleigh’s Big Mistake. Mint Field, led by Estrella del Sol and Sebastian Neyra, blends avant dream pop and shoegaze with touches of trip hop, channeling everyday nostalgia and melancholy through layered guitars and airy vocals. Their catalog includes Pasar de las Luces, Sentimiento Mundial, and Aprender a Ser, followed by an extended edition that deepens the project’s intimate, carefully crafted atmosphere. The group developed Aprender a Ser in isolation, focusing on texture and environment, then distilled a larger batch of recordings into a cohesive set that returns to their roots with rich layering, varied reverbs, and ethereal, ambient currents. They also curate a Mexico City festival named after their song Sueño Despierto, featuring artists such as Mabe Fratti, Valgur, and Diles que no me maten. Big Mistake brings an indie noise pop sound from Raleigh, formed by Elijah Hall and Michael Utt after their work on My Sister Maura, and introduced with the single party pickup. Admission is $17 in advance and $20 day of show.

Writing Workshop: A Snapshot of Lifetimes

At Orange County Public Library, this writing workshop invites participants to use journaling to uncover the personal narratives that shape their lives and then compress those insights into a single poem. Guided prompts and attention to figurative language will help turn experiences, emotions, questions, and truths into a focused one-page piece. No poetry background is needed, only a willingness to reflect, write, and explore. Registration is not required. Pieces created here may be shared at the September Last Fridays Community Poetry Showcase and submitted to the Hillsborough Community Chapbook. The session is led by Amal Kassir, Hillsborough’s 2025 to 2027 Poet Laureate, who was born and raised in Denver to an Arab father and an American mother. She has performed and taught in 13 countries in settings that include orphanages, refugee camps, and youth prisons. At the University of Colorado Denver, she designed an undergraduate major titled Community Programming in Social Psychology, creating programs for a wide range of causes and people, and she founded House of Amal, a global writing community centered on introspection, faith, and literature.

JOHN-ROBERT at The Pinhook

Presented by andmoreagain, this stop of John-Robert’s Where Do You Wanna Go? tour comes to The Pinhook. Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 day of. John-Robert has been performing since childhood, appearing on the Ellen show at 13. At 19 he left Edinburg, Virginia in 2019 to move to Los Angeles and start his music career, choosing that path over a Berklee scholarship. He signed with Nice Life/Warner under Grammy-nominated producer Ricky Reed, released multiple singles and EPs, and earned co-signs from Alessia Cara and Camilla Cabello. A live fireside performance of his 2023 song "Come Pick Me Up" helped bring his mix of traditional folk and Appalachian country into a modern pop setting. He toured widely through 2023 and 2024 in the US and abroad supporting Madi Diaz, Rayland Baxter, Leon Bridges, and Liam Gallagher. Virginia continues to shape his writing, from the 2023 EP Garden Snake to a move back home in early 2025 to begin a new body of work. Now independent, he released the EP Cross Stitch in 2025 and has recently toured with JOSEPH, Ax and the Hatchetmen, and Infinity Song, with new music on the horizon this year.

Louis Malle’s MY DINNER WITH ANDRE (1981)

At The Carolina Theatre of Durham, the Retro: The Criterion Collection program features Louis Malle’s My Dinner with André, a PG-rated 1981 film from the United States running 111 minutes. Over the course of a single meal at a restaurant on New York’s Upper West Side, playwright and actor Wallace Shawn meets with theater director André Gregory for an intimate exchange that shifts from light recollections to searching conversations about love, mortality, money, and the beliefs that guide daily life. Portraying versions of themselves and coauthors of the screenplay, Shawn and Gregory bring keen insight and unguarded honesty while Malle observes with graceful restraint. The result is a singular portrait of cosmopolitan life and a distinctive entry in conversational cinema. Tickets are $12 per person, with a $50 option for a 5-pass.
