Even Hotel Bozeman Yellowstone Intl Arpt, an IHG HotelIn Search of Sammy Williams with Rachel Phillips and Charlotte Mills
At Bozeman Public Library, Gallatin History Museum staff members Rachel Phillips and Charlotte Mills present an exploration of the historical record surrounding Sammy Williams, a cook who spent many years working for ranches around Manhattan, Montana while being known locally as a man. After Williams’s death, neighbors learned Williams was female, and friends arranged burial in Meadow View Cemetery with a substantial headstone bearing an inscription that notes the name Sammy Williams while the given name remains unknown. The talk follows the trail left in newspapers, voter registrations, city directories, property deeds, and other Gallatin County records to piece together Williams’s life without speculating about personal motivations. Recent findings highlight property ownership and participation in voting before women in Montana had the franchise, opening paths for further research into others who navigated legal limitations to secure rights and responsibilities. Phillips, raised in Bozeman and a Montana State University graduate in history with museum studies training, serves as the museum’s Research Director and oversees its library and collections. Mills, born in Bozeman and raised on a nearby farm, holds undergraduate and master’s degrees in accounting from Weber State University, previously served as Gallatin County Clerk & Recorder and Election Administrator, and now works at the museum as Operations Director.

Livingston Depot CenterJune OUTPOST – Bozeman – Returning to Center: The Labyrinth Walk for Integration & Healing
Female veterans gather in Bozeman for a guided walk on the Bozeman Public Library Labyrinth, an age-old tradition used for transition, reflection, and healing. Across history, warrior communities have treated labyrinths as a sacred threshold where the weight of battle can be released and the shift from survival back to humanity can begin. This walk follows a deliberate path that mirrors recovery and integration. Move inward to let go of what no longer serves, pause at the center to reconnect with your deepest self, then step outward with renewed clarity and strength. Through quiet, movement, and attentive presence, participants are invited to set aside unseen armor and remember who they are beyond service and survival. The focus is not speed, performance, or choosing the perfect route. It is about showing up, walking with intention, and making room for mental, emotional, and spiritual reflection within a supportive circle of fellow women who served. No prior experience is necessary, only a willingness to walk, reflect, and come back to center.
Bozeman Public LibraryMother Roots-A New Moon Circle-Strawberry Moon
With each new moon comes a chance to slow down, reflect, and begin again. Guided by a trained facilitator who is also a mother, this peer-centered space welcomes conversation around both joys and challenges, offering support and shared wisdom from different generations in a caring, judgment free setting. The format combines gentle structure with flexibility and includes simple, enjoyable ritual to honor the fresh start energy of the new moon, nurturing connection, nourishment, and intention. Topics often include feeling overwhelmed or burnt out, partner relationships, balancing work and family, shifts in identity, local supports and resources, and ways to ask for help.
