April Featured Artist - Pamela Yelton

Featuring Pamela Yelton, this showcase centers on hand painted stones born from a desire for connection. She began during 2020 after watching mandala rock painting videos, choosing 3 to 4 inch black river rocks and dotting tools, and gifting friends designs in their favorite colors with personal messages written on the underside. In her work, the mandala, a Sanskrit word for circle or center, reflects the universe in Hindu and Buddhist traditions and symbolizes unity and wholeness. It also serves as a tool for meditation, focus, and mindful attention. Yelton mixes and thins her paints, places a central dot with the worn eraser end of a mechanical pencil since larger tools did not suit her, then adds smaller dots at the cardinal points and between them so the pattern grows on its own. This year she selected stones of varied colors and sizes from Chesterfield Valley Nursery and adapts each design to the rock’s unique markings. What began as purely mandala designs now includes flowers, rainbows, and asymmetrical patterns. She gives every piece a name, written on the underside. These pet rocks are created to calm, comfort, and ground, encouraging presence in the moment. The artist hopes they will find lasting homes.

Feyza Eren and The Midwest Jazztette

At Blue Strawberry STL, vocalist Feyza Eren appears with The Midwest Jazztette, a nine-piece ensemble exploring West Coast jazz, Latin jazz, and bossa nova rooted in the 1950s. The program echoes the cool-school sound associated with Gerry Mulligan, Shorty Rogers, Stan Getz, and the Birth of the Cool, with five horns interlacing a rhythm section and vocals for close harmonies that feel both restrained and intense. Formed in 2013, the Jazztette performs from a book of more than 100 charts, many crafted by band members to highlight soloists through features and improvisation. Internationally acclaimed jazz vocalist Feyza Eren joined in 2024, bringing experience across jazz and pop and a notable background in the Turkish music world, and her phrasing blends naturally with the ensemble’s horn textures. The lineup includes Feyza Eren on vocals, Craig Todd on alto sax and flute, Brian Reno on trumpet and flugelhorn, Levi Bennett on tenor sax and flute, Ben McDavid on baritone sax, Mikail Andria on trombone and vocals, Jim Cady on bass, Mike Sissin on piano, and Bradley Currey on drums.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Critters Cut

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Critters are spliced together into a single supercut packed with surprises. The Turtles film brings Eastman and Laird’s underground comic to the screen as four mutant turtles from the New York City sewers attempt to rescue their mentor Splinter from Shredder and the Foot Clan, directed by Steve Barron and featuring the final creature costumes designed by Jim Henson. It was a major hit in 1990 and held the distinction of top grossing independent film for close to a decade. In Critters, a pack of furry alien Krites lands in rural Kansas and terrorizes a farmhouse family while a shape shifting bounty hunter adopts the persona of rocker Johnny Steele. The film marks its 40th anniversary and launched four horror comedy sequels. This Critters Cut was conceived and edited by Jon Scorfina of Strange Brew and Michael Morlaine of Dark Dream Cinema. Sarah Gailey - Make Me Better

Presented by Left Bank Books and the Left Bank Books Foundation, this author event at The Heavy Anchor features Sarah Gailey, a bestselling writer and recipient of the Hugo and British Fantasy Awards known for speculative fiction, short stories, and essays. Gailey will discuss Make Me Better, a story that examines the pull of community and self-improvement alongside the shadows that can come with both. The novel follows Celia, who is exhausted by loneliness and heads to Kindred Cove for the Salt Festival hosted by a secluded community that promises healing and inevitable transformation. On a remote island famed for its extraordinary ecology and an ever growing reef, the community maintains that there is no grief because there is no suffering. Celia arrives hoping to belong, to be restored, and to finally believe. New York Times bestselling author Katee Robert describes the book as gloriously eerie, filled with unreliable perspectives, and deeply affecting. Gailey will be in conversation with Left Bank Books’ Danielle King. After the talk, Gailey will personalize and sign books, and signed or personalized copies can be mailed across the country. Gailey’s work has been published internationally and in multiple languages. They have written comics for Marvel, EC, and BOOM! Studios, and they serve as editor and publisher of Stone Soup and Love Letters: Reasons To Be Alive.

The Howard Levy 4

At Blue Strawberry STL, The Howard Levy 4 brings a Chicago-based sound that moves with ease through jazz, Latin, world music, and blues. Led by Grammy-winning harmonica innovator, pianist, and composer Howard Levy, the quartet features guitarist Chris Siebold, bassist Joshua Ramos on upright and electric bass, and Brazilian drummer Luiz Ewerling. Their set blends imaginatively reworked American and Brazilian pieces with original compositions that draw on many cultures and rhythms. Levy has released 17 albums as a leader and appears on hundreds more. He co-founded Béla Fleck and the Flecktones and has recorded and performed with Kenny Loggins, Paquito D’Rivera, Donald Fagen, and Kurt Elling. His groundbreaking approach turned the diatonic harmonica into a fully chromatic voice while preserving its blues character, opening wide creative possibilities. On stage he moves between harmonica and piano with striking fluency, sometimes intertwining both for surprising textures. Publications such as the Chicago Tribune and JazzTimes have praised his extraordinary virtuosity and buoyant piano style, noting influences that include McCoy Tyner and Herbie Hancock. Siebold, the house guitarist for A Prairie Home Companion, adds deep experience across jazz and fusion. Ramos, who spent five years with Ramsey Lewis, is a sought-after bassist. Ewerling’s Brazilian roots enrich the ensemble’s rhythm and color. Their EP, Live from Chicago, showcases the group’s energetic, genre-spanning reach.

David Cronenberg’s EXISTENZ (1999) — Friday Night WTF!

Friday Night WTF at Arkadin Cinema & Bar features David Cronenberg’s eXistenZ, a sci-fi horror dive into video games, virtual reality, and corporate conspiracy. In a near-future world where games plug into players through an electronic umbilical cord, game designer Allegra Geller, played by Jennifer Jason Leigh, survives an assassination attempt and goes on the run with her publicist, portrayed by Jude Law. Pursued by a black market bio-port mechanic played by Willem Dafoe, they slip into the digital realm of Allegra’s latest creation to stay ahead of danger. Echoing the nerve-jangling spirit of Videodrome, the film unleashes unsettling creatures, tactile bio-controllers, and a narrative that blurs the boundary between twisted fantasy and hard reality, perfectly suited to this series’ taste for offbeat, what-am-I-watching selections.
