Sister Cities All-Lanes Meeting: Six Months In

Six months after a handful of table-side conversations sparked the St. Louis–Galway Sister Cities effort, this first all-lanes gathering brings participants together at Boundary at The Cheshire to connect across every lane. In the months since, meetups at Joe’s Cafe, McGurk’s, and The Royale have helped build relationships in St. Louis and Galway, working groups have formed in education, arts, music, business, and visual arts, and support has come from the Irish Consulate as a larger framework takes shape. The agenda centers on recapping progress, hearing updates from each lane, and coordinating next steps toward a shared vision for 2027. The evening starts with a friendly social hour with appetizers, then shifts into the main program. This event is hosted by Steve O’Loughlin and LHM in support of the continuing growth of the initiative.

GNO Rides

An inclusive weekly group ride, made possible by volunteer members of the South Side Cycling Club and South Side Cyclery, welcomes riders of varied experience levels. The ride departs from South Side Cyclery. Participants are encouraged to arrive early so bikes and gear are ready, and anyone needing help getting a bike ride-ready should visit the shop no later than the day before. All riders must check in and complete a waiver. Helmets and bike lights are mandatory. Several pace options are offered to match comfort and goals. A beginner-friendly group focuses on enjoying the ride rather than an average speed, aiming for up to 10 miles in about 1 hour and 45 minutes. Party Pace typically averages 12 to 13 mph over roughly 15 miles. The intermediate group targets 14 to 15 mph for about 20 miles. The advanced group rides 16 mph or faster for approximately 30 miles. Routes change from week to week to provide a range of safe options across parts of St. Louis City and County suited to each group’s ability.

Pace Series

At Forest Park Visitors Center, the St. Louis Track Club presents a long-running Summer Pace Series that emphasizes pacing yourself rather than competing against others. Across 16 weeks, participants follow a variety of routes through Forest Park that range from about 3K to 4.2 miles. Before each run, everyone predicts a finish time, puts away watches and phones, and tries to match that estimate by feel. Points are awarded based on how close runners and walkers come to their predictions, with monthly ribbons for top estimators and season champions honored with trophies during the closing celebration. Each session is $1, and optional donations help with post-run snacks and the end-of-season party. Walkers and runners of all experience levels are welcome in a supportive, social environment. Registration is not required, but a signed waiver is necessary before participating. Most updates are shared by email, and the same registration link is used to complete the waiver and join the list.

Wednesday Night Gaming at Pieces!

Settle in for an evening of tabletop fun at Pieces Board Game Bar and Cafe. Bring a favorite game or pick from the games on hand, with options that range from quick and easy to long and challenging. Even if online RSVPs look light, a regular crowd of at least ten typically turns up. The group meets in a separate private space with cell-style booths rather than in the main bar. After you enter, head toward the glass doors for Pieces and look for the single doorway on the left that leads to that room, or ask a staff member for directions. Happy hour specials are available for early arrivals, and outside food or drink is not permitted. Free street parking is available, and the lot across the street is not open to the public. Some online maps may still point to a former location, so use your preferred navigation app to find the current spot.

"Pulp Fiction" with Live Q&A, presented by The IDEAS Institute

At Alamo Drafthouse St. Louis, The IDEAS Institute presents the third installment of its Film Series with a screening of Pulp Fiction, followed by a live Q&A. The program reflects on the lineage of Depression-era pulp magazines, whose brash, affordable crime and detective tales, sometimes tinged with the supernatural, captured imaginations and helped shape modern genres. Decades later, Quentin Tarantino channels that unruly spirit with exacting craft, shaping a redemption narrative that unfolds alongside overdose scenes and other startling moments, suggesting that cinema can hold the profound and the profane together. The IDEAS Institute Film Series fosters conversation across media, culture, art, academia, and spirituality, building community through shared viewing and discussion that prizes interpretation over passive consumption, with the aim of enriching the inner life of St. Louis.

Thalia in Exile Launch at Realm Makers Expo

This launch at the Realm Makers Expo features early access to signed copies of Thalia in Exile. The authors will be present, including co-author Thalia Schertzer, to meet attendees and share details about this new story set in the Towers of Light world. The book follows Thalia after a midnight assault by the Steele Brothers and their Giant allies sends her and her friends toward the academy at Enohomoned. Echoing the fate of youths taken to serve a distant king, they are drawn into a cultured society aligned with Darkness and taught its language and learning. A moment of comfort on a luxurious train proves deceptive when Headmistress Imogen adds a so-called gift from the bishop to the students’ punch, and Thalia senses a false light at work. Keeping close the Good Book she quietly brought along, she refuses smoke-laced food that turns companions against one another. In a place filled with elegant lies, she must withstand false accusations and demonstrate that true strength flows from a Light that cannot be corrupted.

Neil Salsich, Shanna in a Dress and Shane Devine

Three distinctive voices share the spotlight for a songwriter-focused performance rooted in St. Louis. Neil Salsich, a hometown singer, guitarist, and writer, began in South City bars and wine rooms, built momentum with his original roots-rock band The Mighty Pines, and reached a wider audience with a celebrated stint on NBC’s The Voice. He also appears with Dave Grelle’s Playadors and Sean Canan’s Voodoo Players, often teaming up with a range of local musicians, and he recently launched the Meet Me In Music podcast to record and preserve stories from music-makers in St. Louis and beyond. Shanna in a Dress brings razor-sharp wit and open-hearted storytelling that swings from laughter to tears, sometimes inside a single tune. Her songwriting recalls the insight of John Prine and the tuneful charm of Ingrid Michaelson, with a playful Phoebe Buffay spirit, and she performs with a sweet vocal style accompanied by guitar, piano, and ukulele. She began at the University of Virginia, found inspiration in Boulder, and now makes music out of St. Louis when not touring the United States or Europe. No two shows are alike thanks to spontaneous banter and a lively stage presence, and her smart, bold, accessible lyrics take on complicated subjects with clarity and spark. Shane Devine contributes a different shade of storytelling, crafting songs that range from novelty and nonsense to comic ballads and tragic narratives, all steeped in folkloric verse. Recognized by the local press for singular, incisive lyricism, his work leans surreal, fantastical, and richly detailed. Around town he leads The Opera Bell Band, often performs with old-time specialist Nick Pence, and on rare occasions plays guitar with the doo-wop group the Chardonnays. Together, this bill showcases rootsy songcraft, unfiltered humor, and vivid imagination, offering three complementary takes on contemporary folk and Americana.

Psycho Beach Party (2000)

At Arkadin Cinema & Bar, Psycho Beach Party, adapted from Charles Busch’s long-running stage play, sends up slasher films, beach movies, and psychological melodramas. Set in 1960s Malibu, it follows Chicklet, an aspiring surfer managing multiple personalities, as a rash of shocking murders unnerves the local teens. Potential culprits range from a washed-up surfing sage and a crew of beach heartthrobs to a platinum-haired B-movie star, a foreign exchange student from Sweden, and Chicklet’s seemingly flawless mother. Writer and director Charles Busch appears in drag as the stylish detective Monica Stark, connecting the dots in this genre-blending caper. The Deltaz at City Winery STL

The Deltaz perform as a Nashville based brother duo who weave Americana, blues rock, and close-knit harmonies into a sound grounded in American roots. Ted and John Siegel grew up outside Los Angeles, sharpening their craft on Southern California stages with early guidance from bassist Rick Rosas, known for work with Neil Young and Joe Walsh, then sharing bills with The White Buffalo and earning a reputation for gritty, soulful shows. After the Woolsey Fire destroyed their home and studio in 2018, they moved to Nashville and rebuilt, channeling that chapter into Give It All to You, a 12 track album produced by Grammy winner Mark Neill and recorded live to capture their chemistry and emotional depth. Now mainstays in Tennessee’s roots community, they have held residencies at Dee’s Lounge and The Underdog, played Fox & Locke, and appeared at Pilgrimage Festival. Their ties to the Mississippi blues world include collaborations with Watermelon Slim, sets at the Juke Joint Festival, and a performance at Mississippi State Penitentiary. The performance reflects resilience, connection, and a deep devotion to the traditions that shape their music.
