(Tentative) BBMJ Open Play & Guided Play for our students

Due to a potential scheduling conflict, the status of this session will be confirmed during the week of the event. Taking place in Community Room B at The Library Center, it offers open play and guided play centered on mahjong. Tiles will be provided, and participants can bring their card if they have one. Priority at the tables goes to Mahjong 101 students and guided play participants, while there should still be space for many others. All experience levels are welcome, as long as attendees already know how to play or have completed Mahjong 101. Those brand new to the game can look for beginner class dates in the events listings. The library permits outside food and drinks, which is handy if you plan to grab lunch on the way.

West African Drumming Lessons

A beginning to intermediate class in West African drumming explores traditional djembe and dundun rhythms from the Malinke and Soussou peoples of Guinea. Instruction is designed to welcome all experience levels, with a focus on making these time-honored arrangements approachable and engaging. There is no charge for the first month of classes. Studying these traditions is presented as a meaningful way to practice the Five Principles of Unity and may support growth in areas such as confidence, memory, coordination, listening, creativity, communication, teamwork, community building, musicality, and staying present. Participants may also experience relaxation, a healthy workout, a natural boost in endorphins, a deeper sense of human connection, and the development of new neural pathways. Evidence-based literature is cited as linking bilateral rhythm practice with benefits that can assist with recovery related to trauma, addiction, depression, anxiety, and other challenges. The class is led by Neil, a percussionist with more than two decades of experience in West African drumming. His training includes study with Ibrahima Camara of the National Ballet of Senegal, M’Bemba Bangoura of Ballet Djoliba in Guinea, Michael Markus of Magbana Drum and Dance in New York, and Bowrodo and Laurent Camara of Ballet Africains, as well as other principal members of Ballet Africains, Ballet Djoliba, and Ballet Tayeli. He spent six months in residence studying in Conakry, Guinea, and worked in New York for 12 years, performing at Central Park SummerStage, Times Square’s Nokia Theater, and S.O.B.’s for sold-out audiences. He began teaching theater and music appreciation to children as a teenager at the Pinon Canyon Center in Tijeras Canyon, New Mexico, and also teaches English and computers. Known for a warm, supportive style that brings beginners and advanced players together, he aims for the right mix of challenge and encouragement and remains a lifelong student of Guinean traditions.

Film Classes for Youth, Spring 2026

A new Intro to Filmmaking option welcomes aspiring creators ages 9 to 13, focusing on collaboration, the building blocks of story, and the basics of camera use and editing. Students team up to craft short projects, with plenty of room for play and creative exploration. Youth who are 13 can enroll in this or the teen offering, depending on what suits their maturity. The Film Production class serves ages 13 to 18 and invites both beginners and returning students to dive deeper into cinematic storytelling. Thirteen year olds may choose this class or the younger option as the best fit. Across both tracks, the program builds problem solving, literacy with technology and the written word, original storytelling, teamwork, leadership, and follow through. Tuition for Intro to Filmmaking is $290 for the full semester, or four payments of $75, and includes access to the editing and screenwriting software used in class. Salsa & Strings: Caribbean Night

This lively, hands-on cooking class trades the usual taco routine for bold island flavors. Work side by side to prepare ropa vieja, a slow-simmered shredded beef with tomatoes, peppers, and spices, along with mofongo made from mashed fried plantains, garlic, and olive oil. Round out the feast with coconut rice and a crisp mango and cucumber salad, then finish with a passionfruit-inspired dessert. You will chop, sauté, mash, season, and taste throughout the session as the group builds the meal, then sit down to enjoy it together, either in the kitchen or in the gazebo if the weather allows. After dinner, the chef-instructor sets aside the knives, picks up a violin, and closes the evening with Latin and Caribbean melodies. No rhythm needed, just a love of good food, good music, and a night that feels refreshingly different.

Sky Smeed

Sky Smeed returns to The Shoe Tree Listening Room at Arrow Creative Reuse for an album release performance presented in an intimate, alcohol free setting. A folk singer and songwriter, he crafts songs with wit, heart, and clear eyed storytelling. He grew up in a one room schoolhouse outside Chanute, Kansas, picked up a Takamine acoustic at 16, and drew early inspiration from Bruce Springsteen’s The Ghost of Tom Joad and Son Volt’s Trace, setting him on a long road of writing and performing. Now preparing to share his tenth record, Live at the Rock House, he showcases mostly new material alongside a few longtime favorites. The album was recorded in front of a focused audience and reflects what drives him most, standing before listeners, telling stories, and singing songs without studio polish. Based in Lawrence, Kansas, his music has been featured on NBC’s The Blacklist, is heard on Kansas Public Radio’s Trail Mix, and serves as the theme for the Lawrence Humane Society. Comparisons often point to Gram Parsons and John Prine, and his easygoing stage presence brings to mind Todd Snider and Paul Thorn. The performance highlights folk tunes that spark laughter, tender moments, and singalongs. General admission is $20.

Film Classes for Youth, Spring 2026

Two youth film classes offer age-appropriate pathways into filmmaking. For ages 9 to 13, Intro to Filmmaking welcomes beginners and developing media makers. Participants explore what makes a compelling story and why it matters on screen, learn how to operate a camera and edit video, and collaborate on short projects with a playful spirit that invites experimentation. Thirteen year olds may enroll in this group or the teen class based on fit and readiness. For ages 13 to 18, Film Production invites new and continuing students to dig deeper into cinematic storytelling. Drawing inspiration from masterworks and building original pitches, students develop an idea into a script and produce a single longer project over the term. Along the way they gain experience with acting, screenwriting, directing, sound recording, video editing, and designing a movie poster. Thirteen year olds may choose between classes according to maturity and comfort level. Both tracks emphasize creative problem solving, literacy with technology and writing, original storytelling, collaboration, leadership, and follow through. Tuition for Intro to Filmmaking is $290 for the semester and can be split into four payments of $75, with access to the editing and screenwriting tools used in class included. Tuition for Film Production is $380 for the semester and can be split into four payments of $97, and also includes access to the same software. Scholarships are available for qualifying families. Student work created during the program is presented theatrically at a Student Film Showcase at the Historic Fox Theatre. Classes meet at The Creamery Arts Center.

Benjamin Tod and the Inline Six 2026 Tour

Benjamin Tod brings the Inline Six 2026 Tour to Gillioz Theatre, highlighting Shooting Star, a new album that marks a clear shift for the Lost Dog Street Band frontman. Once closely tied to somber themes of struggle and survival, he turns toward gratitude, patience, and a steadier outlook on this solo chapter. Working with top Nashville players, he threads honkytonk through a sound that touches outlaw and red dirt alongside folk and indie influences. The feel leans nearer to Hank Williams and Marty Stuart than to Bob Wills or George Jones, with vocals that convey clarity and a sense of renewal in the face of adversity. The project took shape after he wrote I Ain't The Man, the album’s opening track, which sparked a creative push just beyond his comfort zone. Through these songs he aims to help listeners face hardship and better serve their families, themselves, and their communities, encouraging a return to the spirit in every part of life. Reflecting on a turbulent past while embracing possibility and purpose, he shares a message rooted in hard work, change, and thankfulness.

Discover the Driftless

Author John van Vliet leads a talk at South Haven Baptist Church focused on the unglaciated Driftless Area, a 24,000 square mile landscape that stretches into Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, and Illinois. The talk offers practical guidance for exploring this distinctive, lesser-known part of the Midwest, featuring deep-cut valleys, steep limestone bluffs, and cold, swift trout streams. It also explains why the Driftless contains one of the densest networks of trout waters in the world, with useful ideas for those interested in fishing this region.

Downtown Book Club: The Inheritance of Orquidea Divina

The Downtown Book Club meets every second Thursday of the month, and this session gathers at the Creamery Arts Center Arts Library for a discussion of The Inheritance of Orquidea Divina by Zoraida Cordova. The novel follows the Montoya family, long accustomed to uncanny happenings like a pantry that never empties and a matriarch who never leaves their home in Four Rivers. When Orquídea Divina summons her relatives to her own funeral to receive an inheritance, she transforms into a ceiba tree, leaving behind unanswered questions. Years later, her descendants Marimar, Rey, and Rhiannon begin to manifest unusual gifts while an unseen adversary threatens their family line, pushing them to journey to Ecuador to uncover the truths Orquídea kept hidden. The story shifts between Orquídea’s past and her family’s present, offering ample material for conversation about legacy, secrets, and the bonds that tie generations together.

Ghosts of Pythian Castle

Explore Pythian Castle after dark during an overnight, professionally guided paranormal research experience centered on integrity, preservation, and respectful inquiry. This Springfield landmark has stood for more than a century and has served many purposes, and staff provide historical background before leading structured sessions through designated parts of the building. The program features a guided overview of the castle’s past, small group rotations through approved areas, late night access for investigation, shared use of basic research tools, a break space for rest and refreshments, and a closing discussion to review observations. It is not a haunted house attraction, it is a research-focused event for people who value careful methods and an appreciation for history. Attendance helps fund ongoing preservation work and community centered efforts connected to the site. Because the property is historic, expect stairs, uneven flooring, and low light. Participants are expected to follow staff instructions, remain within marked areas, act respectfully, and refrain from alcohol or illegal substances. Unsafe behavior may result in removal without refund. Photography, video, and audio recording may take place. Those who prefer not to appear can notify staff upon arrival. Billy Bob Thornton & The Boxmasters “2026 Morro Rock Tour”

The Historic Gillioz Theatre presents Billy Bob Thornton and The Boxmasters on the 2026 Morro Rock Tour, celebrating the arrival of their album “In The Bay,” the 21st release from J.D. Andrew and Bud Thornton. The record reflects their deep love of 1960s rock and classic pop, with arrangements that nod to Brian Wilson’s approach to instrumentation and songs sparked by time spent in Morro Bay on California’s central coast. Longtime collaborator Teddy Andreadis adds piano on select tracks, including a spirited part on “The Swift” created by recording at half speed and playing it back at full speed, a studio trick popularized by Beatles producer George Martin. Formed in 2006, The Boxmasters have built a wide-ranging catalog rooted in the sounds of the sixties, echoing the Beatles, the Byrds, and the Beach Boys, while also drawing influence from The Mothers of Invention, The Allman Brothers, Kris Kristofferson, John Prine, and Big Star.

Breast Ultrasound Screening - HerScan

HerScan will be onsite at Alps Health Direct Primary Care offering breast ultrasound screenings. The exam is painless, uses no radiation, is safe for those with implants, and does not require compression. It is intended to be a quick, convenient, and affordable option for proactive breast health. For individuals with dense breast tissue, adding an ultrasound can increase detection rates to as high as 96 percent, which can help identify concerns earlier. At this time, HerScan does not accept Medicare, Medicaid, or other third-party insurance, and it recommends continuing with annual mammograms, breast MRI, and physician-guided breast self-exams.
