The Driftless Revelers

The Driftless Revelers bring their offbeat, string-powered roots music back to the Upper Peninsula at Ore Dock Brewing Co. Led by Matthew R. Sayles, known to longtime Marquette music fans as a founder of Frostbitten Grass and Philville Records, the group leans into old-time textures with a playful edge and a Midwest wink. Formed during the pandemic era, this Eau Claire, Wisconsin outfit draws inspiration from early blues and jazz, hillbilly string band traditions, and the adventurous folk sounds of the 60s and 70s. Their sets weave witty storytelling with tight musicianship, featuring original songs by Ben Nelson, Sayles, and Jerod Kaszynski. Banjo filtered through a wah effect, the mournful cry of resophonic steel, and the pulse of upright bass shape a sound that nods to the past while wandering into slightly psychedelic territory. Since launching their debut tour in 2021, they have appeared alongside celebrated bluegrass artists such as Tim O’Brien, the Gibson Brothers, and Larry Stephenson, toured extensively across the upper Midwest and West Coast, and stood out at gatherings including Sol Grass Music Festival, Flatrock Bluegrass Jamboree, Mile of Music in Appleton, and Midsummer in the Northwoods Bluegrass Festival, with Rolling Stone Magazine coverage along the way. Their releases span American Fork Standards, Live at the Slowpoke Lounge & Cabaret, and In the Kitchen with the Driftless Revelers, capturing both deadpan humor and onstage chemistry. Praised by regional media for an irreverent and highly original approach to American roots with a Midwest twist, and often compared for their spirited stage presence to acts like Ween, Dr. Hook and the Medicine Show, They Might Be Giants, Tenacious D, Cheech and Chong, and the Holy Modal Rounders, the band leans into joy and groove. The result is a dance-ready night built from voices and strings, delivered with a grin.
