NO OTHER CHOICE - TCFF Tuesdays WINTER 2026 - TUESDAY, APRIL 28TH

At the State Theatre, TCFF Tuesdays presents NO OTHER CHOICE as part of its rescheduled Winter season, with both a matinee and an evening screening planned. Park Chan-wook’s Korean thriller centers on a recently dismissed middle manager at a South Korean paper company, newly acquired by American owners, who grows so humiliated and desperate that he decides to remove his rivals for work through murder. Lee Byung-hun stars, and the story is adapted from Donald E. Westlake’s 1997 crime novel. The film weaves satire and tragedy with dark humor to critique late-stage capitalism, and The New York Times has highlighted its striking mix of empathy and horror. Honors include three Golden Globe nominations including Best Picture, two Critics Choice Award nominations including Best Adapted Screenplay, and a place on the Oscars shortlist for Best International Feature.

Tuesday Trivia Night at Rare Bird Brewpub

A weekly trivia night at Rare Bird Brewpub offers prizes every game and attendance perks across two seasons. Teams typically include 1 to 6 players, and larger groups may still take part, but only up to six count toward season rewards. Each game features four written or visual rounds with 15 questions each plus a 15 question music round. Teams complete a worksheet together at their table, then swap papers with nearby teams for scoring as answers are read aloud. During the music portion, short clips play and teams identify details such as the title or artist. Use the same team name each week so attendance is tracked. Nightly prizes include Rare Bird gift cards of $30 for first place, $20 for second, and $10 for third. Teams with perfect attendance for a season receive two rounds of Rare Bird beers for each team member at the season finale, with a maximum of six players counted. Devices like phones, smart watches, tablets, and computers may not be used to look up answers, and sharing or shouting answers outside your team is not allowed. Violations lead to disqualification for the night, and repeat offenses result in removal for the season. This is a community hosted series where teams take turns writing and running the questions, and host teams receive complimentary Rare Bird beers and a $25 food tab during their hosting night, up to six players, with hosting also counting toward perfect attendance. First time hosts submit their rounds ahead of time for review. To volunteer as a host or ask questions, contact Beth Milligan at beth.milligan@gmail.com or 231-342-0611.

The cafe may be busier than usual, so patience with staff is appreciated, and tipping when possible helps. To stay in good standing with neighbors, keep noise to a minimum, be courteous in the lot, and depart calmly. Nearby businesses, a church, and homes share the area, and respectful behavior helps ensure the gathering can continue.

SENTIMENTAL VALUE - TCFF Tuesdays WINTER 2026 - TUESDAY, MAY 5TH

Presented at the State Theatre as part of the 2026 Winter season of TCFF Tuesdays, this rescheduled selection showcases Sentimental Value, a Norwegian drama about an estranged family trying to mend itself after the loss of its matriarch. Sisters Nora (Renate Reinsve) and Agnes (Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas) are grieving when their father, a renowned filmmaker portrayed by Stellan Skarsgård, decides it is time to rebuild their relationship. He urges his eldest, a dedicated working actor, to take the lead in his most personal project. When she turns it down, he offers the role to Elle Fanning and proceeds to shoot in the family’s childhood home. The film’s unfolding mirrors the family’s struggle to face old wounds and choose between breaking free or embracing their shared past. Recognized at the Cannes Film Festival as a Palme d’Or contender and recipient of the Grand Prize of the Festival, it also holds seven Critics Choice nominations including Best Picture and appears on the Oscars shortlist for Best Casting, Best Cinematography, and Best International Feature. Mandala and Breathwork

Explore your inner world in a two part experience led by Lynnette Rasmussen. It begins with creating a personal mandala by filling a circle with color, images, shapes, and symbols. Mandala comes from Sanskrit and refers to a sacred circle, and the act of making one can reflect what is present inside in that moment, opening a pathway to intuitive and unconscious insight and a shift from busy thoughts toward the heart. The session then moves into breathwork, a three part active pranayama that calms the mind and supports the body in letting go of what it no longer needs to carry, honoring the ways our bodies hold the stories of our lives. Many participants leave feeling lighter, clearer, and more hopeful. Lynnette draws on many years as an Occupational Therapist and National Pilates Instructor.

Laughter Ecstatic Dance in Traverse City

The spring season brings a laughter-themed ecstatic dance in Traverse City, centering on the simple joy of laughing together and letting movement lift the mood, whether the laughter arises easily or needs a little spark. The gathering takes place at The Grand Traverse Circuit, a church-like venue with parking available in the lot behind the building and on nearby streets. Enter through the door facing the street, where a ramp provides accessible entry for participants with limited mobility. All people are welcome. Each session begins with time to arrive in the body and settle, followed by gentle exploration of the theme through sharing, movement, and play to help the group connect. The heart of the experience is an approximately hour-long musical journey that moves from gradual opening and energy building through transformation, release, integration, and rest. After the music, there is optional space to reflect on anything that arose, then a simple close. The dance floor invites free-form expression in a consent-centered environment. Any style of movement is welcome so long as it supports safety for everyone. People of all sizes, types, and ages are invited, and no registration is required. Admission is pay-as-able, $10 to $20 per dance, payable in cash at the venue or via Venmo at @JStar-Williams. Helpful items include water and comfortable clothing that allows free movement and helps regulate temperature. Those who feel inspired may bring something small to share such as a poem, song, snack, meaningful object, or rattle. Community guidelines encourage arriving as you are and offering the same acceptance to others. Move in ways that feel right while staying aware of shared safety. Approach others gradually if you wish to dance near or with them. Please keep phones off the floor and refrain from alcohol or drugs. Conversation is saved for off the dance floor, though sounds and vocal expression are welcome within the music. Participants are encouraged to care for their own well-being throughout. Check in often and choose what feels supportive, even if that differs from what others are doing. Suggestions or requests for support can be directed to Jeanie, who has hosted Ecstatic Dance in Traverse City since 2016.

An Evening with Tom Perrotta

New York Times bestselling author Tom Perrotta returns to the City Opera House to discuss Ghost Town, a novel set during a turbulent summer in 1970s suburban New Jersey that echoes the places of his youth. The story is told by an older Jimmy Perrini, now a novelist who shifted from literary to commercial work, as he looks back on the season when tragedy upended his life. Isolated from family and longtime friends, young Jimmy gravitates toward two older teens, one a troubled local with a fast car and a haze of weed, the other a bright, unconventional girl whose Ouija board becomes a shared outlet for their grief. As a highly visible community crisis plays out, Jimmy is pulled between fascination with the occult and the harsh realities of his hometown, exploring how the past lingers long after we think we have moved on. Doors open with live music before the program begins, college scholarship winners are recognized at the top of the show, and a Q&A with an author signing follows in the lobby. Perrotta is the author of eleven books, including Election and Little Children, both adapted into Academy Award–nominated films, and The Leftovers, which became an HBO series honored with a Peabody Award. His other works include Bad Haircut, The Wishbones, Joe College, The Abstinence Teacher, Nine Inches, Mrs. Fletcher, and Tracy Flick Can’t Win. Support for the event is provided by Green Brick Foundation, North Guard Technology Group, and Golden Fowler Home Furnishings, with livestream underwriting by Nancy Davy and entertainment support from Higgins Hearing and Audiology.

Family River Day - July

GTCD’s monthly Family River Days invite families to discover the Boardman-Ottaway River throughout the Natural Education Reserve. During this hands-on program, the Nature Center serves as a welcoming hub for learning, self-guided exploration, and time along the river. Participants can peer into the world of aquatic macroinvertebrates, carefully catch and release frogs while learning about their life cycle and habitats, and contribute to a community BioBlitz by recording wildlife observed in the surrounding parkland. These shared activities nurture curiosity, build environmental awareness, and encourage stewardship of the river and the natural places that make the community special. The program is free, and registration is required. Designed for families and children.
