TREES, GRASS, BUSHES, TRAILS : The Nature of Joel Terkeurst

This exhibition presents paintings by Joel Terkeurst, an accomplished artist who also works as a long-haul truck driver and audiobook narrator. His work often focuses on wild landscapes where human presence is absent or overshadowed by the power of nature, though he does not limit himself to that subject alone. A formative childhood moment, when a talented aunt sketched the backyard, helped spark his dedication to drawing and painting. Influences from figures like the English painter John Constable can be felt, and the pieces convey a deep respect for the natural world along with a clear love of paint. The event offers a chance to experience these works and meet the artist.

Rebekah Jon and more

A release show brings together Rebekah Jon, Monica James, and Checkered Lilies at The Stray in Grand Rapids. Rebekah Jon offers versatile, emotive vocals and reflective songwriting, creating songs that feel familiar yet distinctly her own. Her performance blends music with storytelling and encourages curiosity, connection, and shared feeling. Michigan-born and Nashville-based, Monica James is a songwriter and performer with a classically trained voice and narratives that leave a mark. She mixes country wit, folk candor, and bluesy soul into originals with an authentic touch. Having performed live since her teens and drawing on material that stretches from the 60s to today, she builds bridges across generations. Listeners who appreciate Brandi Carlile or Joni Mitchell may feel at home with her sound. Checkered Lilies highlight a new release, possibly their first, after logging well over a hundred shows under a cover band alias. They have been recognized for a seasoned stage presence, strong chemistry, and broad appeal across styles and ages. Their original work leans into emotional honesty, pairing driving indie rock with melodic hooks to explore intimacy, resilience, and the messy edges of growing up, all delivered with dynamic live energy. The Stray is a cafe that blends music and the arts, offering craft beer, coffee, wine, and a full dinner menu before the music. Admission is free, with tips encouraged to support the artists. The room is set for focused listening, with performers at the center, and guests are asked to silence phones and keep conversations low.

The session features a playlist of music by Sufjan Stevens and will unfold in a calm, supportive atmosphere. Breathwork here is an active meditation that uses repetitive breathing to access a deep state. The experience begins with introductions, shared intentions, and a few tarot readings, followed by gentle practices to settle in. Participants then move into approximately 30 minutes of active breathing while lying on the floor, return to a natural rhythm, and close with a brief integration period for anyone who wants to share. Loud music plays for about an hour to deepen immersion in the practice. Preparation tips include optionally avoiding alcohol and other mind-altering substances for 24 hours beforehand, keeping your stomach light or empty before the session, and wearing loose, comfortable clothing. Consider bringing a blindfold or eye pillow, a water bottle, and a yoga mat. A pillow or blanket can add comfort, and the studio also provides pillows, blankets, and bolsters. Personal items such as oils or crystals that align with your spiritual path are welcome, and eye pillows are available for purchase at $10. This practice is not recommended for those with severe asthma, severe heart disease, mental illness, epilepsy or a history of seizures, acute physical injuries, or severe diabetes. Anyone with concerns or questions is encouraged to reach out. A recommended donation of $20 is optional, and an RSVP is expected. After the session, plan for gentle self-care, nourish yourself with a healthy meal, and consider supportive practices like an epsom salt bath or intimate time with a partner. Further details will be announced.

Trashy Tuesday

A neighborhood cleanup focused on keeping Highland Park clean, safe, and welcoming for pets, pedestrians, and neighbors. Spend a few minutes stepping outside for light trash pickup and a bit of fresh air, whenever it fits your day. Tidy up in front of your home, along your block, or elsewhere in the neighborhood based on the time you have. Dog walkers can carry a larger bag to collect wrappers, cans, and other discarded items along the way. Families can use the outing to show kids how small actions make a difference. New residents can wave or say hello, since it is a friendly place. Those mindful of property values may appreciate that regular upkeep helps. Please bring your own supplies such as bags, gloves, or a picker stick, stay on sidewalks and the parkway between the sidewalk and curb, and use caution when crossing or approaching streets.
