Emotional Self-Care at the Solar Plexus, 5 week Kundalini Yoga series

This five week Kundalini Yoga series with Susanne Werblow centers on emotional self care through the solar plexus at Somatic Wisdom Institute. In yogic teachings this energy center sits between the navel and the heart and serves as a bridge between the lower and upper chakras. Its quality differs from the focused heat of the navel, carrying a more fluid emotional tone, and it can hold old narratives, childhood imprints, unprocessed anger, grief, and vulnerability. When this area is balanced and open it can support compassion, authenticity, and heart led living. Throughout the series participants cultivate awareness in the solar plexus, strengthen and open it physically and energetically, gently release stored emotional patterns, tend to the inner child, and support nervous system regulation and resilience. Each week offers two complementary class styles, one centered on a kriya practice and another on meditative flow and integration. The series is offered in a hybrid format, with options to attend in person or online, and all sessions are recorded and emailed so practice can continue at a comfortable pace. The cost is $175. Please bring a yoga mat and a water bottle, wear clothing that allows easy movement, and note that mats are available to borrow.

Mariel: The Beginning with A.J. Frazier

A.J. Frazier will be featured at Schuler Books in Grand Rapids for an event centered on their debut novel, Mariel: The Beginning, an appealing choice for readers who like apocalyptic fiction and rich, character-focused storytelling. The tale does not open with flames but with small sparks such as a journal, a microchip, and a child not expected to survive. In Chicago in 2019, a priest emerges from a coma haunted by visions he cannot explain. A woman trained as an assassin starts to question the mission that has shaped her life. A young bookstore clerk is unknowingly fitted with a chip that could change what comes next. Spanning years and countries, the novel brings together a priest, an assassin, and a young woman drawn into a hidden war. It ranges from Russian enhancement programs to American political maneuvers, blending prophetic dreams with children turned into weapons. As their stories converge, they collide with forces older and far more dangerous than they can grasp. A.J. Frazier is a transmasculine author and autistic first responder who has relied on storytelling since childhood to process emotion, trauma, and identity. Beginning at age seven, writing became both shelter and a way to speak. Seventeen years in the making, Mariel: The Beginning fuses psychological intensity with apocalyptic stakes, exploring religion, queer identity, trauma, and unfiltered human emotion.

Auditions for Bandstand will be held at Orchard Hill Reformed Church under the direction of Abby Pletcher and Chase Buher, with choreography by Casey Adams. On arrival, please park in the back and follow the signs to the auditions. Sign-up instructions are provided on the listed sign-up page. Prepare about 30 seconds of a musical theater song and a 20 to 30 second monologue, unless auditioning only for the ensemble. Learn the appropriate audition dance ahead of time, and bring clearly marked sheet music for the accompanist. Dance tutorials will be available to help you prepare. Those being considered for the role of Donny may be asked to play piano at callbacks. Callbacks will also take place at Orchard Hill Reformed Church. Rehearsals are planned for The Homeschool Building, and performances are scheduled in East GR. Rehearsal commitments vary by role, and the team is willing to work with schedule conflicts and unique circumstances. Cast members are expected to stay current, since frequent absences can make it difficult to keep pace. Due to the musical demands, five supporting band roles have been precast. Lead roles, select supporting roles, and all ensemble positions remain open for auditions. Please note that the production contains some strong language and intense portrayals of war and PTSD. A $40 production fee will be required from cast members at the read through to help cover costumes and props.

Birding Blandford Nature Center

A morning of birding at Blandford Nature Center brings together the Grand Rapids Audubon Club and the Kalamazoo Audubon Club. Spread across more than 260 acres with nearly eight miles of trails shaped by glacial terrain, the nature center features mature hardwood forest, pine stands, wetlands, ponds, and streams, along with historic buildings and a working farm that reflect the area’s connection to the land. The trail network moves between habitats that support a wide range of birds, with warblers, vireos, orioles, grosbeaks, thrushes, and flycatchers often found in mixed flocks. The route makes its way toward the Highlands, where the landscape opens to meadow and grassland. Once a golf course and now restored as a natural area, the Highlands offers excellent habitat for species such as Eastern Bluebird and Field Sparrow. A fully paved ADA accessible trail links the Highlands parking area to the main Visitor Center. The meeting point is the main parking lot by the Visitor Center, and the outing begins near the pond loop before continuing onto the trails. Beyond birding, visitors can explore the Visitor Center to see live animal ambassadors like birds of prey and reptiles, walk through the heritage village, or visit the working farm with seasonal animals and gardens. Americana Sundays: An Afternoon with J. Oscar Bittinger and Daniel Bracken

At ArtRat Gallery, two West Michigan standouts trade songs in a relaxed exchange. J. Oscar Bittinger draws on a long path that began with Midwest touring in the late 1970s and continued with cofounding the 80s and 90s pop-rock group Pillar of Fire, recognized by Musician Magazine. In the early 21st century he turned back to acoustic traditions, launching The Folk Bros with Bruce Zeeuw and Steve Aldrich for gritty folk with humor, shaping Oxter/Mahone to blend Celtic roots with American rhythms, and forming Dublin Station with Lauran Hardin to mix traditional Irish tunes with original pieces that carry a Celtic tilt, sometimes adding beats and grooves. Songwriter and fingerstyle guitarist Daniel Bracken brings experience as a recordist and producer for public media and as a performer in the US and Ireland. His recent focus on personal songcraft offers an openhearted blend of spirituality, wistfulness, and humor, while drawing on the storytelling spirit of Irish and American roots music. Together they share the spotlight in a song swap that celebrates craft and tradition.

FREE Microchip/Vaccine Clinic #1 of 3

Free microchips plus Rabies and distemper vaccines are available at this volunteer-run clinic, with services provided when the veterinarian deems a pet healthy enough. Dogs need to arrive on a secure collar or harness with a leash, and the request is to avoid flexi leashes as well as prong or shock collars. Cats must come in a sturdy carrier, and spare leashes, collars, and carriers will be on hand if required. Guests are helped in order of arrival, and care is provided by volunteer veterinary technicians and assistants, with a DVM present to address any vaccine reactions. Pets receiving their first DAPP or FVRCP distemper shot will need a booster in 3 to 4 weeks. If a pet is known to react to vaccines, give an appropriate dose of benedryl beforehand and tell the team. For safety, animals that cannot be handled due to behavior or health may be referred to a local clinic, and muzzles and treats can be used as needed. Supplies are limited, with enough for at least 100 pets. Microchips are donated by @fi.nano, and vaccines and other materials are being purchased with support from the Pets Are Family fundraiser. If your animals are already chipped and vaccinated and you want to help, you can sponsor a vaccination for 5 dollars. Look for updates in the event and on their page.

Felting wool slippers workshop with Marikah, 2 days

Create a cozy pair of custom wool slippers in a two-day, hands-on wet-felting workshop with Marikah at Walker Ice & Fitness Center. Work from the first wool layer to the final fit on your feet, choosing from a range of colors and using quality New Zealand wool. Along the way, learn to lay out two types of wool, fine merino roving and carded Maiori batts, calculate shrinkage, shape and form footwear, use ready-made templates in your size with tips for adapting them later, practice core wet-felting techniques and fitting, and add decorative touches with yarn, silk, or other materials. The instruction centers on a streamlined method that reduces time and physical effort while producing comfortable, durable slippers. Extremely dense, professional felt takes additional time and experience, so this class focuses on an efficient approach with strong results. Expect to leave with a finished pair and a solid base of skills for future projects. Day 1 introduces wool, tools, and key processes, covers shrinkage and template use, and begins the wool layout. Day 2 is all about felting, shrinking, shaping, and fitting directly to your feet. The cost is $120 for Woodland Weaver and Spinners Guild members and $150 for non-members, with all materials and tool use included. As a bonus, each participant receives access to a private three-hour online slipper-felting course at a slightly more advanced level with unlimited viewing. No prior felting experience is required, and beginners are welcome if they are ready to listen, follow guidance, and enjoy the process. Expect periods of standing, walking, and occasional bending; if you have back, hand, or mobility concerns, reach out before registering to discuss comfort and suitability. The only requirement is to bring a good mood and be ready to work, learn, and have fun. For questions or to register, email 4marikah@gmail.com.
