SAW THE MUSICAL | The Unauthorized Parody of Saw

Returning due to popular demand, SAW The Musical is an unauthorized parody that trades blood-curdling terror for songs, choreography, and dark humor. The story revisits the first film, starting when Lawrence Gordon and Adam Stanheight first come face to face in the notorious bathroom, then follows their attempts to decode the rules, reveal hidden truths, and outsmart the game. It unfolds as a macabre love story with a cheeky spirit reminiscent of Little Shop of Horrors and Avenue Q, exploring sexuality and the challenge of choosing the life you want. The production brings the iconic bathroom to the stage with a playful wink and plenty of suspense. The show runs approximately 120 minutes including an intermission and is presented at The Hill Arts. Recommended for ages 14 and up. Attendees 13 and under must be accompanied by an adult 16 or older. Content advisory includes explicit material, strobe effects, and simulated gore. Parental discretion is advised. Accessible lift and seating are available.

Greg Mendez

Greg Mendez makes his debut at SPACE with a night of concise, emotionally vivid songwriting, joined by Scarlet Rae and State Birds. The Philadelphia-based artist leans on pop-forward melodies and quick-strike guitars to carry spare, clear-eyed stories, his voice reaching for innocence even as it brushes against darker corners. Beauty Land, his full-length for Dead Oceans and follow-up to a 2023 self-titled breakthrough, was recorded mostly solo straight to tape in a small Philadelphia home studio. The album moves through grief, love, and addiction with lucid detail, often in songs under three minutes, folding toy-piano sparkle and organ shadows into a warped, bittersweet twist on classic sunshine harmonies, with fragile arrangements that find rare flashes of redemption in shared voices. Scarlet Rae, born in Los Angeles and now based in New York City, brings a blend of understated acoustic elements, shoegaze haze, and breathy, effects-laced vocals shaped by years of performing that began in her teens. She fronted the indie folk trio Rose Dorn, whose debut Days You Were Leaving arrived on Bar None Records in 2019, then relocated to Brooklyn in 2020 to focus on solo work. Since then she has appeared live with bar italia, toured with Sedona, and shared stages with Fantasy Of A Broken Heart, Bloomsday, and CFCF. After signing with Bayonet Records in 2024 she released the single Bleu and developed the EP No Heavy Goodbyes from TikTok sketches and home demos, refining the songs with producer Jordan Lawlor in Los Angeles and playing most of the parts herself, drawing on influences that include Placebo. The collection pairs airy melodies with serrated distortion while tracing acceptance, solitude, and loss. Tickets are $18 in advance and $22 on the day of the show, with a $2 discount noted for SPACE.

Audience members may encounter characters such as the Oracle, the High Priestess, the Doctor, and the Crone as the story unfolds. Developed from the company’s earlier work created for the Maryland Renaissance Festival, this version has been expanded into a touring production. Known for original, visually poetic, performer-devised pieces, the award-winning ensemble is frequently praised for turning mischief into art and for a singular, whimsical style. Tickets are $20 in advance, $23 at the door, and $30 for preferred seating. Pay-what-you-can admission is available, and no one will be turned away for lack of funds. At Mayo Street Arts, free on-street parking is available nearby, and a paid lot is a short walk away. The venue is served by Greater Portland Metro bus routes with nearby transfers on 7, 9A, and 9B. Performances are wheelchair accessible. There are two accessible spaces at the front of the building, though there is not yet a curb cut at that location. If you need additional information or accommodations, please contact the venue. For community health, anyone feeling sick should stay home. Reserved seats are held until the performance begins, then unclaimed seats may be released. Reservations are nonrefundable, and if the event is canceled due to weather or illness, refunds are issued through the ticketing platform.

Hannah Cohen and more

At SPACE, New York City alt-pop songwriter Hannah Cohen appears with Lily Seabird and Emily Irving. Cohen brings songs from Earthstar Mountain, her fourth album shaped by years in the Catskills, daily walks in the woods, and quiet reflection that grew into memory-rich pieces. Made with partner and collaborator Sam Owens, also known as Sam Evian, the record folds in flutes, strings, and gentle synths, and welcomes contributions from friends including Sufjan Stevens, Sean Mullins, Oliver Hill, and Claire Cottrill (Clairo). Themes of change, love, and loss run through tracks like Dusty, Earthstar, Mountain, Draggin’, Dog Years, and Summer Sweat, and the album has drawn strong critical praise for its immersive sound. Vermont songwriter Lily Seabird adds intimate folk rock from Trash Mountain, a new collection distilled to its most resonant essentials. Informed by time on the road and a creative home of the same name, the album balances unwelcome exits and uncertain futures with resilience, hope, and the grounding power of connection and chosen family. She has also toured as a bassist with Greg Freeman, Lutalo, and Liz Cooper. Portland, Maine artist Emily Irving completes the lineup with folk rock that is playful and heartfelt, shaping songs that reflect, surprise, and soothe. Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 the day of the show, with $2 off for SPACE members.

Saw the Musical

Back by popular demand, this unauthorized musical parody of the cult horror classic returns with singing, dancing, and a hilariously twisted tone. The story revisits the first film when Lawrence Gordon and Adam Stanheight first cross paths in the notorious bathroom trap, exploring the rules, their secrets, and whether they can outsmart the game. Blending dark comedy with a blood-soaked love story, it channels the spirit of Little Shop of Horrors and Avenue Q while pushing boundaries around sexuality and what it means to live the life you love. See the iconic bathroom brought to the stage at The Hill Arts. The performance runs approximately 120 minutes including an intermission and is recommended for ages 14 and up. Guests 13 and under must attend with an adult 16 or older. The production features explicit content, strobe effects, and simulated gore, so parental discretion is advised. Accessible lift and seating are available.

Wednesday Night Improv

An all-participation improv session focused on playing, not performing. There is no audience, and the atmosphere welcomes both first-timers and experienced improvisers. Each gathering is led by different facilitators, which keeps the activities fresh. Participants can engage at a comfortable level, whether easing in or jumping right into scenes and games. Expect playful formats such as inventing a character from a whimsical name for a short solo, creating scenes from suggested locations, a Shark Tank style challenge that spins a problem into judges, contestants, and spur‑of‑the‑moment inventions, and a town hall where everyone takes on a role to debate an issue. The group meets upstairs; from the entrance, the door ahead and a little to the right leads up rather than into the large room on the first floor. Parking is straightforward with large lots on both sides of the Woodfords Club. Attendance is typically around fifteen, with anywhere from seven to twenty five participants. Some attendees choose to socialize afterward at The Great Lost Bear, a nearby restaurant and bar. Contributions are pay what you can, with a suggested amount of $5.

The Co-Conspirators play Cliff Island Community Hall

At Cliff Island Community Hall, The Co-Conspirators bring harmony-rich folk and singer-songwriter tunes that blend bluegrass, country, blues, gospel, and roots influences. Traveling from Quebec in honor of Canada Day, this duo has drawn comparisons to The Weavers, Ian and Sylvia Tyson, and Richard and Linda Thompson, and their performances balance original songs with traditional material and familiar old-time covers. Canadian folk artist Valdy remarked that they sound as if they have been singing together their whole lives. Often called modern troubadours, they have spent the past five years playing hundreds of shows at house concerts, folk societies, festivals, seniors and community centres, bars, and restaurants across Canada and the United States. Their recordings include Shadowing the Organ Tuner, The Unreliable Narrators, Half a Tank of Gas and a Full Case of Beer, and War is a Racket and Other Irrefutable Truths.

The Power of the Prompt: Writing Workshop with Lara O’Brien

An exclusive writing workshop with author Lara O’Brien invites participants to discover how a simple prompt can open the door to the stories they carry. The session begins with a prompt, a pen, and a circle ready to write. It welcomes anyone who wants to put words on the page, whether starting a memoir, rekindling a creative spark, or exploring personal narratives. Participants respond to prompts, listen to one another, and offer encouragement in a warm, supportive setting. Capacity is limited. Lara O’Brien founded Howth Writing Workshops and Retreats at her kitchen table and expanded it into retreats on Martha’s Vineyard, in New York and Maine, and in the mountains of Cádiz, Spain, where she co-hosts writing and yoga retreats at Suryalila. She created Hooks & Reels in 2023, an evening of story and song featuring local writers and musicians. In 2025 she was recruited by Trinity College Dublin’s Business School to develop and present Storytelling for Cultural Communications and Innovation. She facilitates youth summits on writing and leadership, leads songwriting workshops for youth groups, serves as an AsIAm Champion supporting the autism community, and helped restore the historical Howth ÉIRE 6 sign as convener of the ÉIRE 6 Restoration Group and the Howth Community and Arts Group. She divides her time between Howth, Dublin, and Vinalhaven, Maine. Her book The Power of the Prompt traces how a modest writing practice blossomed into a thriving community. Blending memoir, narrative, and practical guidance, it brings readers inside her workshop approach where words foster connection, courage, and friendship. It is for anyone who wants to write but is unsure where to begin, part inspiration and part guide, and a celebration of creative community. At its heart is a reminder that every story can start with one brave line on the page.

Intention in Form: Throwing, Altering, & Handbuilding with Samuel Newman of Suay Ceramics

Explore how intention guides functional pottery in a daylong, mug-focused workshop led by Samuel Newman of Suay Ceramics. Through demonstrations in throwing, trimming, altering, and thoughtful handle design, the session concentrates on refining form and composition. Participants will work through iterative design while studying three signature shapes: the Calibration Mug, the Jigsaw Mug, and the Maker’s Mug. The Calibration Mug evolves through repeated making, with rib work animating a porcelain surface and a handle tuned to mirror that motion. The Jigsaw Mug uses flowing curves and defined planes to lead the eye around lip, foot, handle, and body so every angle offers a distinct read. The Maker’s Mug distills a five-year exploration made in small batches, balancing proportion, gesture, and movement. Its layered profile responds well to soda firing atmospheres and it carries its name because it reflects the making process and naturally invites makers to analyze how it comes together.

Magdalene: I am the utterance of my name

In honor of Mary Magdalene's Feast Day, this video presentation features the Off-Broadway music theater work Magdalene: I am the utterance of my name. Created by playwright, director, and actor Sylvia Milo with composer and percussionist Nathan Davis, the piece probes the myths, beliefs, and contradictions that have surrounded Mary Magdalene for more than two thousand years. Drawing on ancient sources, artworks, and contemporary writing, it lifts up the revolutionary message preserved in her Gospel, a text once buried and lost for centuries. The story unfolds in seven apparitions, with Milo embodying distinct archetypes while Davis's score blends hammered dulcimer, harmonium, sand, water, and field recordings from places connected to the legends. Visual design by Monica Duncan, movement direction by Janice Orlandi, and choreography by Natalie Lomonte and Joanna Kotze broaden the experience and invite a deeper understanding of this essential narrative. Blending theater and ritual, the work offers a resonant, spiritual encounter that challenges troubled histories in search of transcendence. Donations received at the event will support creator Sylvia Milo and HopeGateWay.

Summer Storytelling Series: Lambs

The Maine Irish Heritage Center presents a community storytelling gathering that revives the old ceili house spirit, where neighbors once shared tales, songs, poems, music, and local history. Hosted by Cathy Furness, this outdoor event welcomes anyone who wishes to tell a story, recite a poem, sing a song, or simply listen in a friendly circle. Pieces should be 10 minutes or less, and a timekeeper will help everything flow smoothly. Kindness and inclusivity are essential, so hate speech is not permitted. Stories do not need to be Irish, as the focus is on celebrating the oral traditions of all cultures. The event takes place at Lambs in South Portland, a neighborhood bar and event space on the Fore River offering a full bar, light bites, and generous seating indoors and outdoors. Aligned with MIHC’s mission, the gathering fosters connection while supporting local businesses and shared community spaces.

Timothy Burris

RSVP is free for a chamber program featuring lutenist Timothy Burris, baroque violinist Sylvia Schwartz, and baroque cellist Raffael Scheck. The evening highlights early music specialists who couple performance with teaching and scholarship. Timothy Burris has appeared widely across Europe and the United States, often collaborating with leading figures in historical performance. His ninth and latest recording, Ciaccona, includes his own lute version of Bach’s celebrated Chaconne for solo violin. A Fulbright alum, he trained at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague and earned a Ph.D. from Duke University. He taught lute at the Royal Flemish Conservatory of Music in Antwerp and now serves on the faculties of the Portland Conservatory of Music and Colby College, while also tutoring French and Spanish at Waynflete School. Reviewers have praised the refinement and depth of his artistry, along with a richly nuanced sound. Raffael Scheck, originally from Freiburg im Breisgau, is the Gibson Professor of modern European history at Colby College, where he has taught since 1994. Before turning fully to academia, he studied cello for several semesters with Claude Starck at the Zurich conservatory and later focused on baroque cello. He has performed with numerous Maine-based early music ensembles, and with theorbo player Timothy Burris he co-founded ScheckMate, presenting baroque repertoire on period instruments alongside later works for modern cello and guitar. He has contributed frequently to the Portland Early Music Festival and performs with the Colby Symphony Orchestra. His baroque cello playing has been singled out for its expertise by a former New York Times music critic. Sylvia Schwartz, a Dalcrozian violinist inspired by the interplay of music, movement, and dance, is an active chamber musician in both historical and modern styles. Motivated by music’s capacity to heal and connect, she has performed in venues ranging from a vaccine clinic in Scarborough to Shostakovich Hall in St. Petersburg. Her collaborations include Guts Baroque, which she co-founded, as well as the Baroque Orchestra of Maine, Portland Bach Experience, Classical Uprising, Newton Baroque, Arcadia Players, North Star Baroque, and the Portland Symphony Orchestra. She has also appeared on the Noonday, Quietside, Bagaduce, Vigorous Tenderness, and BEMF Fringe series. She holds an M.Mus. in Violin Performance from the Longy School of Music and a B.S. in Engineering from Olin College, and she teaches at the Portland Conservatory of Music and Palaver Music Center.
