Merrill AuditoriumHaley Heynderickx & Max Garcìa Conover w/ Lady Lamb
At State Theatre in Portland, Maine, Haley Heynderickx and Max García Conover appear alongside Lady Lamb for a night centered on reflective songwriting and close harmonies. The show welcomes audiences of all ages. Heynderickx and García Conover recently completed a second collaborative record shaped by time spent reading about Woody Guthrie and exchanging songs from opposite sides of the country. Their work traces threads of American life, from the impacts of colonialism and generational identity to consumer culture and the challenge of writing honestly about equity. They captured these pieces live to tape over five days in a Vermont barn, using guitars, their voices, and a few found sounds to create something intimate and immediate. The two trade authorship throughout, drawing on figures such as Alicia Rodríguez and Carlos Bulosan, looking inward at family histories, outward at the people and systems around them, and even at the glow of a phone screen. The result unfolds like a conversation between distinct voices that meet in precise melodies, vivid language, and a blend of tenderness and resolve.

A neighborhood walk and conversation, created in partnership by Maine Irish Heritage Center, Mayo Street Arts, and Maine Public for the Jane's Walk ME festival, explores how arts and culture organizations anchor Portland's community and economy. The program highlights city findings that cultural vitality is central to local well-being, while also noting that a recent interpretation by the City of Portland's tax assessor has introduced new risks for organizations that serve as community cornerstones. The route begins at Mayo Street Arts, formerly St. Ansgar Danish Lutheran Church from the 1890s, now an active venue for music, art, and theater in the most ethnically diverse and densely populated square mile in Maine. It then moves to the former Portland Public Market building, where Maine Public Broadcasting outlines plans for studios, production facilities, and a community event space intended to drive economic revitalization, plans that are currently in serious jeopardy. The walk continues down State Street, calling out cultural highlights, and concludes with a tour of the Maine Irish Heritage Center in the West End Historic District. Housed in the transformed Neo-Gothic St. Dominic's Church, the Maine Irish Heritage Center offers wide-ranging cultural resources and programming that draw residents and visitors, strengthening the neighborhood by preserving historic character and sharing the story of the Irish in Maine. The creative team includes Savannah Irish as stage manager, Christine Marshall on costumes, Florence Cooley on lighting, Nic Robichaud on sound, Adam Corriveau on props, Stephen Lupien overseeing the scenic build, and Janice Gardner as intimacy coordinator, with production management by Tootie Van Reenen and Allison McCall. Good friends and award-winning songwriters Jean Rohe of New York and Rachael Kilgour of Minnesota share an intimate in-the-round set, trading songs shaped by love, loss, and community. Both are past winners of the Kerrville New Folk Songwriting Contest and connected over the shared experience of losing their fathers, channeling that grief into music that seeks meaning and brings people together. Rohe crafts distinctive narrative songs that dwell on the inner lives of her characters while engaging with the social forces around them, and her work has been recognized across roots music, songwriting, lyric craft, theater, social justice, jazz performance, and arts education by organizations such as the Brooklyn Arts Council, the NYC Women’s Fund for Media, the Montreux Jazz Festival, the Telluride Bluegrass Festival, the Jonathan Larson Foundation, the Johnny Mercer Foundation, and MacDowell. Vermont’s psych punk garage rocker King Tuff, also known as Kyle Thomas of Witch and Ty Segall’s band the Muggers, comes to SPACE with his new album, MOO. After reviving the Tascam 388 he used to make King Tuff Was Dead, he cut Twisted On A Train in just a few hours and reconnected with the immediacy of recording to tape. He leans into rough edges, plugs in his blue Gibson SG nicknamed Jazijoo, bounces drums in mono, and celebrates the raw, imperfect spark that keeps rock and roll feeling alive. The bill also features Detroit quartet Mod Lang. Antonio Keka and Alex Belfie swap guitar and vocal duties, with Ava East on bass and Ben Taber on drums. Their jangly guitars, big hooks, and onstage chemistry have built a strong local following, and the track TV Star stands out for its catchy, cheeky pull and get-up-and-move energy. Hints of Big Star and The Jam run through their sound. Tickets are $22 in advance and $25 on the day of the show, with a $2 discount for SPACE members. The box office is cash only and does not add fees.
