Anna Kusner and Peter Slutsky

Born from a chance meeting, Anna Kusner and Petr Slutsky present DUETOS, a program that becomes a living conversation between sound and language, the past and the present, performers and listeners. The repertoire weaves Bach, Villa-Lobos, Carulli, Cardoso, and Tárrega together with contemporary original works and specially crafted arrangements created for this project. Familiar pieces are reimagined with intimacy, nuance, emotion, and a hint of unpredictability. At its heart is the atmosphere, a moment when poetry becomes more than words and music more than notes, allowing something personal and genuine to arise between stage and audience. Details of the poetry component stay under wraps to keep an air of intrigue, and the spirit of the evening centers on discovery.

Into the Woods

Into the Woods, with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and a book by James Lapine, weaves together well-known fairy tale figures in a story about longing, responsibility, and the price of getting what you want. A Baker and his wife yearn for a child, Cinderella hopes to attend the King’s Festival, and Jack wants his cow to produce milk. When a Witch reveals a curse that stands in the couple’s way, they set out to break it and cross paths with the others. Their wishes are fulfilled, then the consequences emerge, and each character must reckon with what their choices bring. Hailed as a modern classic, the show features a Tony Award winning book and score that balance wit, heart, and a streak of dark comedy. Originally staged on Broadway by James Lapine with orchestrations by Jonathan Tunick, this musically rich tale brings a fantastical world to life on stage.

Rockville Chess Club Scholastic Tournament

A scholastic chess tournament takes place in the cafeteria at Early B. Wood Middle School, welcoming student players grouped into K-8, K-5, and K-3 sections. The event uses a four-round Swiss format with a time control of game in 25 minutes and a 5 second delay, and results will be dual rated to affect both USCF Regular and Quick ratings. A current USCF membership is required to participate. Arriving early for check-in and instructions is encouraged, especially for those attending their first tournament. Early registration is available at $30 for non-members and $25 for Rockville Chess Club members, with membership verified at check-in. After the early window the entry fee is $40 for all participants. Trophies are awarded to the top five players in each section, and USCF tiebreaks will determine final placement in the case of tied scores. On-site registration may lead to a first round bye or unusual pairings. A first round forfeit results in withdrawal unless the tournament director is notified in advance. Once the first round is paired or begins, no refunds or credits are issued, and no-shows forfeit their entry fees. Chess sets are provided, though clocks may be limited, so players are encouraged to bring a clock if they have one. Free parking is available. Food options are conveniently located across the street, and there is a short lunch break after the second round.

Eye of Maelstrom (A SunDog Production)

After the campout was canceled, this gathering pivots to the scenario that did not run at Bellum. The field features a river, a bridge, and fortified keeps at Rock Creek Regional Park at Lake Needwood. Participants compete to seize keeps with a ten count and to take the bridge flag with a five count. Controlled keeps generate points over time, and the central Maelstrom flag adds five points to the tally. Water rules apply, so heavy armor is not allowed, lightning effects strike an area, and hazards may be present. Sorcery can open a portal across the river for one person at a time, creating new ways to cross. Touch-and-go respawns keep the action moving.

Bungee Buddha Foundations

Learn the essentials of bungee fitness at Flying Buddha Studio in a beginner friendly workshop that covers equipment, key terms, and safety. Participants practice setting up a lane, fitting a harness, and working confidently with the bungee system. Instructors introduce a range of supported movements and link them into simple combinations suitable for newcomers. The session runs in three parts, with about 35 minutes to get set up, a 30 minute guided class, and a 10 minute cool down. Bungee training delivers a high intensity, low impact cardio workout that is gentle on joints. Using a hip and waist harness attached to multiple cords, you will explore leaping and bouncing patterns along with strength moves like lunges, push ups, squats, handstands, and jumps to build coordination, strength, and endurance. The workshop fee is $65. After registering, attendees must provide their weight in pounds and clothing size so the correct harness and bungee configuration can be prepared in advance. Restorations: Close Encounters of the Third Kind

The Director’s Cut of Close Encounters of the Third Kind screens in a new 70mm print at AFI Silver Theatre and Cultural Center as part of the Recent Restorations series. Following the success of Jaws, Steven Spielberg set out to tell a more intimate story about a man driven by an alien encounter, then broadened the scope with extensive visual effects, resulting in another hit. Richard Dreyfuss plays Roy Neary, who has a startling run-in with a UFO on a deserted road and, despite his wife’s objections, pursues the truth. François Truffaut appears as a French UFO specialist guiding efforts to communicate with the visitors. John Williams contributes an Oscar-nominated score centered on the now iconic five-note motif, which lost the Academy Award to his own score for Star Wars and later earned two Grammys. It is rated PG.

Sister Act

Rockville Musical Theatre presents the musical Sister Act at the F. Scott Fitzgerald Theatre. After nightclub singer Deloris Van Cartier witnesses a crime, she is placed in a convent for protection, clashes with the strict Mother Superior, transforms a struggling choir with her disco-infused energy, and helps uplift the community while trying to keep her identity hidden as the criminals close in and she discovers the power of sisterhood. Featuring original music by Alan Menken with lyrics by Glenn Slater and a book by Cheri Steinkellner and Bill Steinkellner, with additional material by Douglas Carter Beane, the show is based on the Touchstone Pictures film written by Joseph Howard and was nominated for five Tony Awards including Best Musical. Presented by special arrangement with Musical Theatre International, with authorized performance materials provided by MTI. Directed by Duane Monahan, produced by Eric Scerbo, with music direction by Scott Richards and choreography by Duane Monahan and Cathy Oh. Tickets are $26 for adults and $23 for seniors and students. Summer Meeting

This seasonal meeting brings together reef enthusiasts for a blend of community time, learning, and a bit of excitement at the end. It begins with check-in, a chance to connect with fellow aquarists, and coral frag sales, then moves into a workshop with the topic to be announced. After a break with more time to socialize and browse frags, the featured presentation takes the spotlight, followed by a short pause and a raffle to close. Guest speaker Nick Giannasca will share practical ways hobbyists can strengthen marine biosecurity and quarantine at home. He will discuss why many marine diseases take hold before outward signs appear, how observation, separation, timing, and informed choices help manage risk, and where PCR testing fits as a tool for revealing hidden pathogens and guiding better quarantine decisions. Giannasca is a molecular biologist and the founder and CEO of dxAquaria, where he also leads research and development. His Maryland-based team focuses on rapid molecular diagnostics for aquatic disease. With nearly a decade of experience across microbiology, cell and molecular biology, and in vitro diagnostic assay development, he works to turn advanced nucleic acid testing into practical tools for aquarium keepers, aquatic veterinarians, retailers, breeders, and aquaculture professionals. At dxAquaria he leads assay and platform development aimed at detecting serious aquatic pathogens early, helping caretakers shift from reliance on visual cues to evidence-driven diagnostics and make stronger biosecurity, quarantine, and treatment choices. He has also been a speaker at Reefapalooza Orlando. WAMAS members attend at no cost, and guests are $10, payable at the door.

AFI Silver After Dark honors the 40th anniversary of Under the Cherry Moon, with tickets priced at $8 and drink specials available. Prince stars as Christopher Tracy alongside Jerome Benton’s Tricky, two Miami gigolos working the French Riviera who target wealthy women for their money. Their latest scheme focuses on Mary Sharon, played by Kristin Scott Thomas in her feature debut, who is set to inherit $50 million on her 21st birthday. The plan changes when Christopher falls in love with her, turning a con into a complicated romance. The film nods to classic Hollywood romantic farces and screwball comedies, featuring production design by Richard Sylbert and black-and-white cinematography by Michael Ballhaus, with credits including Chinatown and Goodfellas. The soundtrack highlights include Girls & Boys, Mountains, and Kiss from the Parade album. Rated PG-13.

Mason Goretsas - 2026 Week 5 Clinic

A week five clinic at Landon School features instruction from McDaniel College head coach Mason Goretsas. He stepped into the Green Terror head role after four seasons as an assistant and brings a record of team success and athlete development. In his first year in charge the program won 10 duals, and it matched that total the following season while fielding a postseason lineup that included six rookies. He also coached Ryker Eckenbarger to a conference title at 141 and the tournament’s Most Outstanding Performer honor. Goretsas grew up in Maryland, winning two state championships at North Carroll High School before beginning his college career at the University of Maryland. He later returned to McDaniel for three competitive seasons, compiling a 67-27 record and placing twice at the Centennial Conference Championships, including fourth at 141 and fourth at 149. He earned a bachelor of science in exercise science from McDaniel and later completed a master’s in kinesiology. His family ties to the college include his wife, Kelsey, who played for the Green Terror women’s basketball team, and their son, Bo. This visit is his fourth with MSWL. Alongside former McDaniel head coach Davey Blake, his connection with the league has helped create a pathway to McDaniel, with more than six MSWL athletes going on to compete for the Green Terror. He has also guided two former MSWL competitors, Xavier Howard and Jaedyn Harris, to the Division III National Championships.

Count Gore De Vol presents THE ALIEN FACTOR + NIGHTBEAST Double Feature

At AFI Silver Theatre and Cultural Center, local TV legend Count Gore De Vol, also known as Dick Dyszel, hosts a two-film salute to Baltimore filmmaker Don Dohler, capturing the feel of classic Creature Feature broadcasts with vintage clips from the Count’s archive and interactive games. Watch for Mayor Bert Wicker, who pops up in both films and looks suspiciously like the caped host. The evening begins with The Alien Factor, a 1978 love letter to 1950s sci fi creature tales made in Baltimore by devoted fans working with tight resources. It showcases a parade of monster suits, inventive miniature work, and a touch of stop motion crafted by Ernest D. Farino, later associated with The Terminator. Lively turns from Don Leifert, Dick Dyszel, Eleanor Herman, and George Stover add to its homespun charm. 80 minutes. Rated G. Next comes Nightbeast in a new 2K restoration sourced from the original 16mm elements. After a meteor shower, a deadly visitor lands near a small East Coast town wielding a vaporizing ray gun, and a sheriff with a dwindling group of townspeople scrambles to stop the carnage. This 1982 regional sci fi horror entry bursts with colorful animation techniques, handmade gore effects, and some awkward sexual encounters, all realized on a reported budget of $14,000. The score includes contributions by a teenage J.J. Abrams. 81 minutes. Rated R.

Rose Royce

Bethesda Theater hosts Rose Royce, the acclaimed Los Angeles band that lit up the charts in the late 1970s. Their breakthrough came with the Car Wash soundtrack, which earned a Grammy for Best Soundtrack Album, and its title track reached number one on both the pop and R&B charts. The same era delivered favorites like I Wanna Get Next To You, a pop top 10 and R&B top 3 hit, and I’m Going Down, an R&B top 10 entry. Follow-up releases added more staples, including Ooh Boy at number 3 R&B, Do Your Dance at number 4 R&B, Love Don’t Live Here Anymore at number 5 R&B, and the enduring Wishing On A Star. The group’s signature sound was crafted with producer and songwriter Norman Whitfield, a key figure in shaping the Motown Sound who was later inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame and honored by the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in the musical excellence category. Their music continues to resonate, sampled by artists such as Beyonce, Mary J. Blige, and Madonna, and heard across radio, television, film, and social platforms. Marking 50 years since the debut of Car Wash, Rose Royce continues to tour across the United States and abroad, presenting a vibrant live show filled with standout lead vocals, lush harmonies, driving rhythms, a powerful horn section, retro flair, and charismatic stage presence. Radiant Rhythms Ecstatic Dance offers a wellness experience centered on freeform movement in a substance free, guided, and welcoming setting. Participants are invited to shift from mental chatter to embodied awareness, expressing themselves in their own way while respecting others. The musical journey follows a wave that begins gently, builds in tempo and intensity, then settles into calm, supporting a gradual warm up, an ecstatic peak, and a soft landing. The format features an opening circle to connect and set intentions, an extended playlist for the dance, and a closing circle for reflection, with quiet on the dance floor to encourage nonverbal connection. There is also space to meet and build community before and after the dance.
