Now in its 16th year, the Blue Crab Bolt Trail Running Series returns for the season with 5K and 10K races in the vein of the Backyard Burn events. Set within Gaithersburg’s wooded parkland, runners encounter lake views, scenic streams, and a route that links many of the park’s standout trails for a rewarding run in the woods. Rockville Chess Club Scholastic Tournament

A scholastic chess tournament takes place in the cafeteria at Early B. Wood Middle School, welcoming student players grouped into K-8, K-5, and K-3 sections. The event uses a four-round Swiss format with a time control of game in 25 minutes and a 5 second delay, and results will be dual rated to affect both USCF Regular and Quick ratings. A current USCF membership is required to participate. Arriving early for check-in and instructions is encouraged, especially for those attending their first tournament. Early registration is available at $30 for non-members and $25 for Rockville Chess Club members, with membership verified at check-in. After the early window the entry fee is $40 for all participants. Trophies are awarded to the top five players in each section, and USCF tiebreaks will determine final placement in the case of tied scores. On-site registration may lead to a first round bye or unusual pairings. A first round forfeit results in withdrawal unless the tournament director is notified in advance. Once the first round is paired or begins, no refunds or credits are issued, and no-shows forfeit their entry fees. Chess sets are provided, though clocks may be limited, so players are encouraged to bring a clock if they have one. Free parking is available. Food options are conveniently located across the street, and there is a short lunch break after the second round.

VCDC leads a daylong ride from Cabin John Regional Park to a string of lesser known places of interest around the Maryland suburbs, with sights that include forgotten towns, hungry robots, messages from space, sacred relics, and even swords transformed into beach volleyball courts. The route finishes at Brookside Gardens Nature Center. Lunch will be picked up at Gemelli’s, then the group will ride about twenty minutes to eat. Ordering by phone in advance is recommended. Seating at the lunch spot is limited, so bringing a picnic blanket can help if tables are taken. Many stops provide portable toilets, though full restrooms are scarce. Expect a long outing with many stops that can take much of the day. The ride is not 50cc friendly. Those who prefer to meet upcounty can coordinate with Rob. Meet in the designated Cabin John Regional Park parking lot rather than the other lots in the park. The start time is tentative, so double-check details before heading out.

The field features a river, a bridge, and fortified keeps at Rock Creek Regional Park at Lake Needwood. Participants compete to seize keeps with a ten count and to take the bridge flag with a five count. Controlled keeps generate points over time, and the central Maelstrom flag adds five points to the tally. Water rules apply, so heavy armor is not allowed, lightning effects strike an area, and hazards may be present. Sorcery can open a portal across the river for one person at a time, creating new ways to cross. Touch-and-go respawns keep the action moving.

A wrestling clinic led by former University of Maryland heavyweight Youssif Hemida, a two-time NCAA Division I All-American and one of the program’s most accomplished heavyweights. He finished eighth at the 2018 NCAA Championships, then climbed to sixth in 2019, and capped his senior year with a 21-9 record. Entering the 2019 Big Ten Championships unseeded, he knocked off multiple ranked opponents, including Ohio State’s Chase Singletary and Wisconsin’s Trent Hillger, to place third, the highest finish by a Maryland wrestler since the program joined the Big Ten. At the 2019 NCAA Championships he fought through the consolation bracket with four victories in a single day to secure back-to-back All-American honors, notching wins over Gannon Gremmel and Tate Orndorff by fall and another NCAA triumph over Sam Stoll. On the international stage he earned a silver medal at the 2018 U23 World Championships at 125 kg with a 3-1 record, outscoring opponents 15-3 before the final against Said Gamidov. His Maryland career included 86 wins, three NCAA appearances, three Big Ten podium finishes, and three seasons as team captain, with a peak national ranking of fourth. This session marks his first appearance at the MSWL and will center on sharing the experience, knowledge, and skills he gained competing among the nation’s elite heavyweights.

He will discuss why many marine diseases take hold before outward signs appear, how observation, separation, timing, and informed choices help manage risk, and where PCR testing fits as a tool for revealing hidden pathogens and guiding better quarantine decisions. Giannasca is a molecular biologist and the founder and CEO of dxAquaria, where he also leads research and development. His Maryland-based team focuses on rapid molecular diagnostics for aquatic disease. With nearly a decade of experience across microbiology, cell and molecular biology, and in vitro diagnostic assay development, he works to turn advanced nucleic acid testing into practical tools for aquarium keepers, aquatic veterinarians, retailers, breeders, and aquaculture professionals. At dxAquaria he leads assay and platform development aimed at detecting serious aquatic pathogens early, helping caretakers shift from reliance on visual cues to evidence-driven diagnostics and make stronger biosecurity, quarantine, and treatment choices. Mason Goretsas - 2026 Week 5 Clinic

A week five clinic at Landon School features instruction from McDaniel College head coach Mason Goretsas. He stepped into the Green Terror head role after four seasons as an assistant and brings a record of team success and athlete development. In his first year in charge the program won 10 duals, and it matched that total the following season while fielding a postseason lineup that included six rookies. He also coached Ryker Eckenbarger to a conference title at 141 and the tournament’s Most Outstanding Performer honor. Goretsas grew up in Maryland, winning two state championships at North Carroll High School before beginning his college career at the University of Maryland. He later returned to McDaniel for three competitive seasons, compiling a 67-27 record and placing twice at the Centennial Conference Championships, including fourth at 141 and fourth at 149. He earned a bachelor of science in exercise science from McDaniel and later completed a master’s in kinesiology. His family ties to the college include his wife, Kelsey, who played for the Green Terror women’s basketball team, and their son, Bo. This visit is his fourth with MSWL. Alongside former McDaniel head coach Davey Blake, his connection with the league has helped create a pathway to McDaniel, with more than six MSWL athletes going on to compete for the Green Terror. He has also guided two former MSWL competitors, Xavier Howard and Jaedyn Harris, to the Division III National Championships.

Bethesda Theater hosts Rose Royce, the acclaimed Los Angeles band that lit up the charts in the late 1970s. Everyone Can Bird! Graduation to Migration

This free, bird-centered morning at the Lake Superior Estuarium highlights the moment when young birds become independent and prepare for migration. The program is presented in collaboration with Friends of the Lake Superior Reserve, Hawk Ridge Bird Observatory, Minnesota Land Trust, Lake Superior Reserve, the City of Superior, and Wisconsin Sea Grant. Participants of all ages and abilities are welcome. Choose a short, guided stroll on a firm gravel path by the river with a bird guide, or enjoy unhurried, station-based activities focused on observing birds. American Sign Language interpretation is available. Binoculars and a spotting scope will be provided, along with a wheelchair mount for optics and portable seating. Accessibility features include a track chair suitable for trails, plus a scooter and walkers courtesy of indiGO. Complimentary shuttle service connects UW-Superior Parking Lot 2 and Woodstock Bay on an ADA accessible bus with three wheelchair positions and seating for 25 adults. Using the shuttle helps reserve the limited on-site parking for those who need it. Attend for the full program or come and go as needed. Light refreshments will be available, and a wheelchair accessible portable restroom will be on site. Advance registration helps with planning and can reserve a seat on the shuttle, though it is not required. Aerial Yoga Foundations

Designed for newcomers to aerial yoga, this introductory workshop uses the aerial hammock as a supportive prop and guides participants through the essentials. Expect instruction on core terminology, wrist wraps, proper hammock placement, basic inversions, and key safety practices. The session also explains how the different aerial yoga class options compare, helping you choose the best next step. Completion of this workshop is required before attending aerial yoga classes on the weekly schedule. Enrollment is limited to 12 participants, so early registration is encouraged. Pricing is $55 without a hammock rental or $65 with a rental. A rental is required to cover the cost of sanitizing studio hammocks after each use. A new student special bundles the introductory workshop with two aerial classes for $95, and hammock rental is not included. If bringing your own hammock that was not purchased at the studio, an instructor will check it for safety, and only climbing grade equipment is permitted. Radiant Rhythms Ecstatic Dance

Radiant Rhythms Ecstatic Dance offers a wellness experience centered on freeform movement in a substance free, guided, and welcoming setting. Participants are invited to shift from mental chatter to embodied awareness, expressing themselves in their own way while respecting others. The musical journey follows a wave that begins gently, builds in tempo and intensity, then settles into calm, supporting a gradual warm up, an ecstatic peak, and a soft landing. The format features an opening circle to connect and set intentions, an extended playlist for the dance, and a closing circle for reflection, with quiet on the dance floor to encourage nonverbal connection. There is also space to meet and build community before and after the dance. Benefits can include stress relief, mindfulness and relaxation, somatic healing, creative expression, playful exercise, and a sense of connection. All ages, genders, sexual orientations, and abilities are welcome. No experience is required, and supportive facilitation helps newcomers ease into the practice. The soundtrack blends new age, worldbeat, tribal, and EDM, arranged as a wave with many non-lyrical tracks. Bring a water bottle and loose, breathable clothing, and consider a yoga mat if desired. Expect to sweat. Alcohol and food are not provided, and attendees are asked not to bring any. The workshop cost is $30. The session is facilitated by Clara Fang, founder of Green Tara Consulting, who specializes in belonging, equity, and inclusion, and is an experienced facilitator of ecstatic dance, Buddhist meditation, and authentic relating, based in Germantown, MD.

Families, friends, neighbors, and community partners can browse the artwork, take part in a charity auction featuring student creations alongside local prizes, and view cultural displays prepared by Academy families that reflect the many traditions represented in the community. Every auction dollar benefits The Chesapeake Bay Trust. Flying Buddha Kids Camp August 17-21, 2026

Kids build mindful movement and creative confidence through aerial yoga, aerial arts such as lyra and aerial dance, acrobatics, gymnastics, and breathwork and meditation. Time outdoors blends mindfulness with art and hands-on projects like tie dye and chalk mandalas. The camp is designed for ages 6 to 11 and older. Enrollment is limited to 15 participants, so early registration is encouraged. The fee is $450 for the week and includes a Flying Buddha T-shirt and healthy snacks, while hammock rental is separate; hammock kits are available for purchase. Payment plans are available upon request at the front desk. After registering, please email your child’s T-shirt size in advance so enough shirts can be ordered for the tie dye activity.
