Dre's Global KitchenMay Opening with Guest Artist Sarah Sutro
Gallery North presents a special showcase featuring guest artist Sarah Sutro alongside new work by permanent gallery artists Marilyn Cavallari, Sean McCusker, Barbara Patton and Carol Shumans. Sutro’s acrylic and watercolor landscapes grow from close attention to nature, shaped by wide rivers she knew while living in Thailand and Bangladesh and by ocean inlets and marshes on both US coasts. Layers of translucent color and abstract marks evoke light on moving water, with bands that overlap, shimmer and soften into the warmth of late day air. The artists plan to attend an opening reception. Sutro’s career spans national and international exhibitions and collections. Her residencies include MacDowell, the Ossabaw Island Foundation, the Millay Colony for the Arts, Blue Mountain Center, the American Academy of Rome, Art Dulcinium in Montenegro and the Goetemann residency in Rocky Neck, Gloucester. She also joined a Blue Mountain water residency that brought artists, writers and filmmakers together to share work and consider water conservancy and environmental awareness. Her honors include grants from the Pollock Krasner Foundation, Mass Cultural Council and Taconic Foundation, and she has taught at regional institutions including Emerson College, AIB at Lesley University, Massachusetts College of Art and Design, Union Institute and University and UMass Boston. Cavallari, founder and owner of Gallery North, creates contemporary land and seascapes in bright, joyful palettes, working on multiple canvases at once. McCusker paints luminous, mysterious terrains where figures move through darkness toward a glow on the horizon. Patton fires ceramics in rapid, smoke-filled processes that blend natural and chemical materials with form and surface, yielding pieces that feel both delicate and enduring. Shumans develops work from a deep bond with earth, light, water and memory, inviting a conversation between what is seen, imagined and felt.

John & Jen
At The Unicorn Theatre, John & Jen offers an intimate portrait of family ties that shift over three decades. Set to a contemporary score that blends pop, folk and musical theater, the story follows Jen as she looks back on life with her younger brother John and, later, navigates motherhood with her own son. Rebellion, family expectations and unspoken care shape their connection, with a timeworn baseball glove serving as a quiet reminder of memory, loss and lasting devotion. Created by Andrew Lippa and Tom Greenwald, the musical features music by Lippa, lyrics by Greenwald and a book by both writers. The production is directed by Tony Award nominee Gregg Edelman, whose work with Berkshire Theatre Group includes White Christmas and Once, and whose Broadway credits span City of Angels, Les Misérables, Into the Woods, Cabaret, Sweeney Todd and Water for Elephants. Music direction is by Nicolas Perez. Recommended for ages 12 and up.

Mahaiwe Performing Arts CenterThe American Five
This regional premiere at the Unicorn Theatre presents a new play by Chess Jakobs that follows Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Coretta Scott King, Bayard Rustin, Stanley Levison, and Clarence B. Jones during a crucial stretch of the Civil Rights Movement. Set in the charged days before the March on Washington, it looks closely at strategy, collaboration, and moral resolve, with themes of nonviolence, leadership, and personal sacrifice. Under the weight of surveillance, intimidation, arrests, and ongoing threats, these leaders forge a coalition grounded in trust, intellect, and a steadfast belief in justice. Developed through workshops at Ford’s Theatre and the University of Michigan and premiered at Ford’s Theatre, the production is directed by Gerry McIntyre, whose previous work includes Nina Simone: Four Women at the Unicorn Theatre and The Mousetrap at the Colonial. A director and choreographer with Broadway and regional credits, McIntyre brings theatrical energy and emotional nuance to a story that shifts attention from a single speech to the collective effort required to make it happen. The play illuminates the often unseen labor, strategic debate, and personal costs borne by those closest to Dr. King, inviting reflection on courage, collaboration, and sacrifice that shaped a movement and continue to inspire generations. Recommended for ages 12 and up. Commissioned and originally produced by Ford’s Theatre under Paul R. Tetreault, with leadership support from Boeing, Art and Sela Collins, and Ray and Alysia Dempsey.

Lovesong, a tender play by Abi Morgan, follows one marriage from youthful beginnings to later years, showing how affection grows, transforms, and endures. Two portrayals of the same couple share the stage, letting memory and present experience overlap as the effects of early decisions echo across a lifetime. The story contemplates aging, identity shaped by remembrance, the delicacy of happiness, the strength of commitment, and the certainty of change, offering an intimate portrait of devotion and the small moments that define a shared life. Directed by Pulitzer Prize winning playwright David Auburn, a longtime collaborator with Berkshire Theatre Group and a creative mainstay on the Unicorn stage, the production features Karen Allen, a Berkshire resident known worldwide for Raiders of the Lost Ark and Starman, and Broadway veteran David Garrison, previously seen with Berkshire Theatre Group portraying Irving Berlin in the world premiere of Coming Back Like a Song. They are joined by Rebecca Brooksher and Shawn Fagan, familiar to Unicorn audiences from The Importance of Being Earnest, Photograph 51, and Abe Lincoln in Illinois, all under Auburn’s direction, bringing a meaningful sense of continuity to this ensemble. With a close company and a lyrical structure, Lovesong reflects The Unicorn Theatre’s focus on artist-driven storytelling and offers a poignant exploration of partnership and memory across a lifetime. Recommended for ages 13 and up.

MASS MoCABranford Marsalis Quartet
The Branford Marsalis Quartet brings the core musical vision of NEA Jazz Master and Grammy Award winner Branford Marsalis to the stage. Marsalis, also a Tony and Emmy nominee, moves easily between symphonic concertos and collaborations with rock musicians such as members of the Grateful Dead, yet his long-running quartet remains at the heart of his work. For more than three decades, this ensemble has maintained a tight lineup and a reputation for uncompromising, finely crafted interpretations that span original compositions along with jazz and popular classics. The group earned Grammy nominations for its albums Upward Spiral and The Secret Between the Shadow and the Soul, and recently made its Blue Note Records debut with Belonging, a complete interpretation of Keith Jarrett’s ECM recording of the same name that has drawn praise from the New York Times. Critics highlight the quartet’s mix of confidence, intellect, and high-energy performance. Tickets range from $69 to $99, with discounts available for Mahaiwe members and youth.
