Volunteer: West Branch Housatonic River Cleanup

Berkshire Environmental Action Team and the Housatonic Valley Association invite volunteers to an annual cleanup along the West Branch of the Housatonic River. Participants will meet at Westside Riverway Park, then head to nearby areas on the banks and into the riverbed to collect trash, with canoes used to haul what is found. A free lunch from a local restaurant will be provided after the cleanup for those who RSVP in advance. Registration is requested so organizers can prepare materials and food and note any dietary needs. Volunteers should be ready to get wet and dirty and are encouraged to wear old clothes, a hat, sunscreen, and old sneakers or waterproof boots or waders, and to bring a full water bottle and sunglasses. A limited number of waders will be available to borrow. In the event of pouring rain or lightning, the cleanup will be postponed. Over the years, these efforts have removed items such as mattresses, shopping carts, inflatable pools, bicycles, televisions, tires, construction materials, metal barrels, everyday litter, and even an empty ATM, leading to noticeably smaller piles of trash as the work continues. American Stories: Rebels and Revolutionaries of the Berkshires

This Berkshire history course offers a deep look at how the region helped shape the nation’s founding and its aftermath, created in recognition of the United States' 250th anniversary. Through compelling biographies of Berkshire County figures, the program explores the American Revolution and its lasting impact across the region, the country, and the wider world. Presented as a five-class series at the Norman Rockwell Museum, each session begins in the exhibition American Stories: Revolution to Rockwell, where discussion centers on a work of art that connects to the day’s theme. The course is led by Justin F. Jackson, a lecturer and visiting scholar at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Topics span early protests in the Berkshires through the lens of Theodore Sedgwick and the Sheffield Resolves, the leadership and erasure of Indigenous communities with Daniel Nimham and the Stockbridge Mohicans, and Black freedom movements from Agrippa Hull and Elizabeth Freeman to Samuel Harrison and W. E. B. Du Bois. The series also looks at Rev. Thomas Allen, Shays's Rebellion, and the crafting of constitutions by a sovereign people in Massachusetts and the United States, and it concludes with Herman Melville, the power of memory, and portrayals of the American Dream. Registration options include individual and two-person enrollment. For one person, pricing is $200 for members and $225 for non-members. Two Photographers: David Katzenstein & David Ricci

A showcase of two photographic book projects spotlights work by David Katzenstein and David Ricci as their publications reach readers. David Katzenstein’s Brownie, from Hirmer Publishers, assembles images made across a decade from 1979 to 1989 and salutes the early Brownie camera line that debuted in 1900. Created with the Kodak Duaflex, a successor to the Brownie introduced in 1947, the series yields photographs that feel vivid, personal, and nuanced. David Ricci’s Hunter Gatherer, published by MW Editions, turns to the American resale world through still tableaux. Over seven years, Ricci photographed in antique malls and fairs, curio shops, thrift stores, and other places where goods from the past are sold. The resulting images uncover a lesser-seen side of these spaces and examine enduring biases and stereotypes in the United States, interweaving themes of racism, objectification, beauty standards, Christianity, and consumerism.

The collection addresses divorce, money pressures, and sexuality, forming a portrait of fatherhood under pressure. These are stories of men trying to hold on to their sense of self while putting on puppet shows, playing pony for their kids, and grappling with what masculinity means today.

Lovesong

Lovesong, a tender play by Abi Morgan, follows one marriage from youthful beginnings to later years, showing how affection grows, transforms, and endures. Two portrayals of the same couple share the stage, letting memory and present experience overlap as the effects of early decisions echo across a lifetime. The story contemplates aging, identity shaped by remembrance, the delicacy of happiness, the strength of commitment, and the certainty of change, offering an intimate portrait of devotion and the small moments that define a shared life. Directed by Pulitzer Prize winning playwright David Auburn, a longtime collaborator with Berkshire Theatre Group and a creative mainstay on the Unicorn stage, the production features Karen Allen, a Berkshire resident known worldwide for Raiders of the Lost Ark and Starman, and Broadway veteran David Garrison, previously seen with Berkshire Theatre Group portraying Irving Berlin in the world premiere of Coming Back Like a Song. They are joined by Rebecca Brooksher and Shawn Fagan, familiar to Unicorn audiences from The Importance of Being Earnest, Photograph 51, and Abe Lincoln in Illinois, all under Auburn’s direction, bringing a meaningful sense of continuity to this ensemble. With a close company and a lyrical structure, Lovesong reflects The Unicorn Theatre’s focus on artist-driven storytelling and offers a poignant exploration of partnership and memory across a lifetime. Recommended for ages 13 and up.

Branford Marsalis Quartet

The Branford Marsalis Quartet brings the core musical vision of NEA Jazz Master and Grammy Award winner Branford Marsalis to the stage. Marsalis, also a Tony and Emmy nominee, moves easily between symphonic concertos and collaborations with rock musicians such as members of the Grateful Dead, yet his long-running quartet remains at the heart of his work. For more than three decades, this ensemble has maintained a tight lineup and a reputation for uncompromising, finely crafted interpretations that span original compositions along with jazz and popular classics. The group earned Grammy nominations for its albums Upward Spiral and The Secret Between the Shadow and the Soul, and recently made its Blue Note Records debut with Belonging, a complete interpretation of Keith Jarrett’s ECM recording of the same name that has drawn praise from the New York Times. Critics highlight the quartet’s mix of confidence, intellect, and high-energy performance. Tickets range from $69 to $99, with discounts available for Mahaiwe members and youth.

Volunteer: West Branch Housatonic River Cleanup

A community cleanup of the West Branch of the Housatonic River brings together the Berkshire Environmental Action Team and the Housatonic Valley Association. Volunteers will gather at Westside Riverway Park, then split into teams to remove litter from the riverbanks and riverbed, with canoes used to haul the collected debris. A complimentary lunch from a local restaurant will be provided after the cleanup for those who RSVP in advance. Volunteers should be ready to get wet and muddy. Wearing old clothes, a hat, sunscreen, sturdy old sneakers or waterproof boots or waders, sunglasses, and bringing a full water bottle is recommended. A limited number of waders will be available to borrow. In the event of pouring rain or lightning, the cleanup will be postponed. These efforts make a clear difference for the river’s health. Past cleanups have removed items such as mattresses, shopping carts, inflatable pools, bicycles, televisions, tires, construction materials, metal barrels, and everyday trash, even an empty ATM. Thanks to continued volunteer involvement, the amount of debris has been decreasing. Registration is requested to help organizers prepare materials and food and to note any dietary restrictions. West Branch River Cleanups are organized by BEAT and HVA and co-sponsored by the City of Pittsfield.

Charlie Hunter x Ella Feingold

Charlie Hunter and Ella Feingold come together for Different Strokes for Different Folks, a duo project that brings Feingold full circle from first hearing Hunter with Leon Parker at the Regatta Bar in the late 1990s to creating and recording alongside him as a peer and friend. Hunter has praised Feingold as a fiercely soulful and gritty guitarist, and that mutual respect fuels a musical exchange that feels like conversation set to sound. The focus is on rhythm, space, and groove, with improvisations that step past familiar forms to create something immediate, intimate, and richly detailed. Quiet moments carry intention, and each idea unfolds naturally. Drawing on jazz, soul, and ambient influences, the music studies time and texture as minimal funk intersects with melody in motion. It is nuanced without fuss, ideal for a windows-down cruise, the kind of playing that gets heads nodding, invites daydreams, and leaves room to sing along. It can inspire musicians to reach for their own instruments. The pace is unhurried and patient. Recorded across four days, the project captures a candid conversation between two friends in a streamlined, minimalist funk setting.

Lala Tamar & Friends featuring Yacouba Sissoko

Lala Tamar teams up with master kora player Yacouba Sissoko for an evening that threads North and West African traditions with a contemporary spark. A singer, songwriter, poet, guimbri player and dancer, Lala shapes ritual-infused North African sounds into a distinctly feminine voice, singing in Arabic, Amazigh and Portuguese with music that feels both nostalgic and dreamlike. She broke new ground by recording a contemporary album in Haquetia and, as one of the first women to carry the guimbri into new musical contexts, has shared stages with Karim Ziad, Khadija El Warzazia and Mehdi Nassouly. She also made her Lincoln Center debut in NYC. With a new album of original songs mainly in Darija, she offers an intimate Moroccan tribute to her heritage, welcoming listeners into a space of play, poetry, softness and strength. The ensemble traces the path of a desert caravan, slides into shaabi grooves linked to Agahadir and Algiers, and weaves African string textures with Arabic ornamentation. The program touches ceremonial healing music, trance-like connection and poetry carried across centuries, highlighting friendship, love and a shared humanity that reaches beyond borders. Yacouba Sissoko devotes his artistry to sharing West African history and culture while carrying messages of peace, love and harmony. Born into a renowned Djeli family in Kita, Mali, he began learning the 21-string kora and its oral traditions from his grandfather at age nine and was touring by fifteen. He studied at the National Institute of the Arts in Bamako and performed with Ami Koita, Kandia Kouyate, the Raoul Fulero Ensemble and l'Ensemble National du Mali. Rooted in community, he presents cultural programs and benefit concerts worldwide and blends his virtuosity with styles from Indian ragas to Appalachian tunes. He performs regularly with Regina Carter and with his own band, SIYA. General admission is $43 plus processing fees, and seating is at café tables. Member and public sales are available.

Explore how birds function through the lens of engineering as Lorna Gibson presents insights from Birds Up Close: An Engineer Explores Their Hidden Wonders. Drawing on her work as an MIT engineering professor and a lifelong birder, she examines feathers, bones, bills, eggs, and flight at both microscopic and larger scales to reveal how structure shapes performance. Hear how feather microstructure creates vivid colors such as the bright red of a male Cardinal and the iridescent reds and greens of Ruby-throated Hummingbirds, how those same feathers keep birds warm and dry with effective down insulation against heat loss, and how they help form the aerodynamic shape of a wing that enables flight. The program concludes with a Q&A, light refreshments, and an opportunity to purchase a signed copy of her upcoming book.
