Woodland Walk
Meet at the parking lot at Happy Hollow Park Dog Park for a relaxed walk on a paved trail with Tippecanoe County SWCD Habitat Specialist Robert Suseland and West Lafayette Park Naturalist Kyle Gebhart. The walk focuses on forest management, with on-the-ground comparisons between areas where invasive bush honeysuckle has been removed and places where it remains. There will be time to ask questions about caring for woodlands, and you can arrange a meeting with a conservation expert to evaluate your forestland. Free registration is available.
Happy Hollow Park Dog ParkThe Effects of Rising Temperatures on Aquatic Health: Insights from Thermal Physiology
At Whistler Hall of Agricultural Research (WSLR), assistant professor Hisham Abdelrahman from the Department of Life Sciences at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi presents an FNR seminar on how warming trends influence aquatic health through the lens of thermal physiology. The talk explores how higher average temperatures and extreme heat events shape performance, survival, and behavior across life stages, with particular attention to coastal ecosystems and shellfish. Drawing on controlled heat exposure experiments, respirometry, and biochemical measures of aerobic capacity, the presentation explains how scientists determine thermal limits and identify sublethal stress. It addresses differences among species and populations and considers how acclimation and thermal hardening may lessen risk. The discussion links these mechanisms to implications for population resilience, fisheries productivity, and ecosystem function, and it outlines how combining physiological insights with field observations and aquaculture practices can guide management, highlight vulnerable periods and habitats, and support adaptation under ongoing global change.
