The TropicsMaking Lake County Home: From Homestead to Hometown
Laurie Stein, deputy director and head of curation at the History Center of Lake Forest-Lake Bluff, offers a look at the earliest settlement of northeastern Illinois with an emphasis on Lake County and the communities of Lake Forest and Lake Bluff. The talk considers who the first homesteaders were, what motivated their arrival, and how their efforts set the stage for the towns that followed. It traces the area’s evolution from the 1830s world of hand-hewn log houses and roadside taverns to the platting of Lake Forest in 1861, outlining the move from frontier living to a planned community, and later to the development of elegant estates and a new business district. This program is part of the History Center’s year-long lecture series honoring the 250th anniversary of the United States. Presented in chronological order, the series brings local and regional scholars together to connect community history with the nation’s past, from pre-settlement Indigenous peoples and early European arrival through experiences in the Civil War and World War II, concluding with a capstone community panel titled Shaping the Next 50 Years: A Community Conversation. Advance registration is free.
