Arts Park

Creativity heads outdoors as the Waukegan Park District’s Arts Park Program brings no cost, hands on art making to neighborhood parks and community gatherings across Waukegan. At King Park, people of every age can try activities such as sketching, painting, mosaics, and sculpture, designed to encourage imagination, self expression, and connection. The traveling Arts Park van makes this stop as part of its community route, and no advance sign up is needed. Since 2011 the program has offered free creative experiences throughout the community. It is supported by a grant from the Illinois Arts Council Agency, which works to build a stronger, more creative, and more connected Illinois through the arts. In 2022 the program earned the Illinois Association of Park Districts Arts in the Park Award, an honor that recognizes agencies that champion the arts and collaborate with artists and arts organizations to enhance quality of life. Guidance from the National Recreation and Park Association underscores the benefits of arts participation for all ages, including confidence, self expression, problem solving, innovation, and a sense of community.

This fishing tournament features a captain’s meeting at the SU Pavilion and a fishing period with no run time. The entry fee is $150. Prizes include guaranteed payouts for the top ten boats, with $1,000 for first place. The biggest fish earns $1,000, and there are $250 awards for the remaining four species. A $250 small boat prize is available for boats 22 feet and under. Discounted transit slips are available through Skipper Buds. Showdown on Sheridan Grass Volleyball Tournament

The Lake Forest College men’s and women’s volleyball programs are hosting an inaugural grass volleyball tournament at Hixon Field on the Lake Forest College campus. Across two days, three competitions are planned. The first day features separate men’s and women’s triples with upper and lower brackets, identified as A to AA for the upper tier and B to BB for the lower tier. The second day highlights coed quads, also split into upper and lower brackets. Every participant receives a T-shirt with signup, with the final design to be announced, and concessions plus a food truck or two will be available on site. Annual Weakley Memorial Picnic

The Waukegan Tamburitzans, a not-for-profit dedicated to preserving and performing traditional Croatian music and dance, present the First Annual Weakley Memorial Picnic at the outdoor pavilion of Zion-Benton Moose Lodge 667. This fundraising celebration honors founders Don and Julie Weakley and marks the ensemble’s 54th anniversary while supporting music, dance, and singing instruction and travel opportunities for its 30-plus members. The program begins with anthems and remarks, followed by sets from the Junior and Adult orchestras and an alumni and all-ensemble performance. A live band is planned ahead of the 50/50 raffle announcement, and the day concludes with a featured performance by special guests Izvor Orchestra. Traditional Croatian cuisine and baked goods will be available for purchase along with beer, liquor, and merchandise. The raffle offers a prize of up to $5,000, and the winner does not need to be present. The event accepts cash only. Outside beverages are not permitted. Picnic tables are on site, but seating is limited, so personal chairs are recommended. Accommodations can be arranged for alumni and performers traveling from outside the area.

CECG: Supercars for Charity Lakefront Edition Ep.5

Now in its fifth year at the lakefront, this exclusive car show offers a relaxing escape from the bustle of the city or a busy workday, set in a scenic waterfront setting with an emphasis on standout automobiles. Entry is by donation at the door to the Kitties Warriors Foundation, with no online tickets available. One hundred percent of donations go directly to this 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to helping cancer patients financially. Event parking will close the half circle in front of Harbor Brewing Co. Lakefront Biergarten for show cars. Parking is first come, first served, all cars are welcome, supercars receive priority, and overflow will use the grass parking next to the venue. For safety, revving, burnouts, and unsafe driving when leaving are not permitted. Police will be at the event and will ticket violations.

Potawatomi Trails Pow Wow

Festivities begin with an early opening for vendor browsing so attendees can explore a variety of items before the first grand entry. The following full day features dancing, singing, a raffle, an auction, laughter, and the many traditions this pow wow brings to the community. Two grand entries take place that day with a dinner break in between. The closing day includes a grand entry, preceded by a Veterans Talking Circle led by Wamblee Loux. A traditional giveaway honors everyone who helped, including spectators, with items for all ages as a thank you to the community. Throughout the weekend, speakers and demonstrators share teachings about culture and traditions. Dancers from every category are welcome, and showcase songs give participants a chance to share their steps. Drum groups, from first-timers to seasoned singers, are welcome to take part. Community participation is encouraged, as the gathering is for the people.

Faith On The Fairway

Faith Lutheran Church, in partnership with the North Chicago Public Education Foundation (NCPEF), presents the sixth annual Faith on the Fairway charity golf outing at Foss Park Golf Course. Registration includes 18 holes of golf, a hole-in-one challenge with a chance to win $10,000, and a post-round reception and lunch followed by an awards banquet. Non-golfers may skip the course and attend the reception, lunch, and awards program after play. Proceeds support the Warhawk Lancer Futures Scholarship, which aims to provide full tuition and additional financial assistance for four semesters at the College of Lake County, helping graduates of North Chicago School District 187 thrive in college. Giving through this event also helps NCPEF meet its 501(c)(3) public support test, which expands the foundation’s ability to accept larger individual contributions.

Andrew Scott Denlinger brings an intimate solo acoustic performance to Harbor Brewing Co. Lakefront Biergarten & Taproom. A longtime presence in the Chicago music scene, he draws on a wide range of influences to craft American rock and roll that balances classic character with a modern spark. His single Draped In Fashion explores the rush of young love, capturing the chase and the unknown with a fresh sound touched by nostalgia. Before focusing on his own releases, he toured nationwide as bassist for Chicago country artist Nick Lynch, performing more than a thousand shows across honky-tonks, clubs and festivals, appearing on ABC Chicago’s Windy City Live, and sharing stages with many of country music’s leading acts. His recent work features bluesy guitar lines, driving rhythms and lyrics that move between heartache and love, and from struggle to everyday life. He continues to perform throughout the Midwest at festivals, bars and campgrounds, with his songs surpassing 400,000 streams and more music on the horizon. The solo set blends rock, blues, country, grunge, pop and R&B into a sound he describes as a reflection of shared human experience and distinctly American.
