Young Frankenstein (1974)

A special screening honors Mel Brooks at 100 with Young Frankenstein, often regarded as his finest achievement and a touchstone of screen comedy. Rated PG and running 106 minutes, the film follows distinguished lecturer Dr. Frederick Frankenstein (Gene Wilder) as he inherits his notorious grandfather’s Transylvanian estate and, with help from Igor (Marty Feldman), Inga (Teri Garr), and the formidable Frau Blücher (Cloris Leachman), revives the family’s experiments. His creation (Peter Boyle) comes to life, and complications escalate when his fiancée Elizabeth (Madeline Kahn) arrives. Roger Ebert praised the movie for its focus and striking visual style, noting that it remains laugh-out-loud funny while reflecting Brooks’s growth and steady command of his material. The legendary comedian is turning 100 and continues to make movies, delighting fans with remarkable energy, and he has shared that the sound of laughter is what drives his work and gives him purpose.

Champaign Urbana Theatre Company production of Ragtime: The Musical

The Champaign Urbana Theatre Company presents a celebrated staging of Ragtime: The Musical, performed with live orchestration as part of the company’s 35th season. Hailed by major publications and honored across the industry, this landmark work has been nominated for 11 Tony Awards, including Best Revival of a Musical, and has earned Tony Awards for its score, book, and orchestrations, along with Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle recognition for Best Musical and Best Score. A recent Broadway revival also took home four Tony Awards, including Best Revival of a Musical, Best Actor in a Musical, Best Actress in a Musical, and Best Sound Design in a Musical. Set in the turbulent melting pot of turn-of-the-century New York, the story interweaves the lives of a sheltered upper-class mother, a resilient Jewish immigrant building a new life, and a bold Harlem musician. Their journeys intersect as they navigate the contrasts of wealth and poverty, freedom and prejudice, despair and hope, all while chasing the promise of the American Dream. With music by Stephen Flaherty, lyrics by Lynn Ahrens, and a book by Terrence McNally, inspired by E. L. Doctorow’s renowned novel, the score spans a rich array of styles. Listeners will hear ragtime pulses from Harlem and Tin Pan Alley, klezmer from the Lower East Side, bright brass band marches, graceful waltzes, upbeat banjo tunes, parlor songs, and sweeping anthems. The Flamazing Race!

The second edition of this playful twist on a duck race sends flamingos coursing down a curving water course toward a finish in the pool, supporting CU Special Recreation’s Flamazing programs. The flock bobs, glides, slides, and spins as they vie for first place. Registration allows entrants to choose how many flamingos to enter, priced at $5 each or $40 for a Zazzle, which is 10. Before race morning, numbers for each entered flamingo are shared so entrants know which ones to root for. A rain date is planned.
