Lawson will be in dialogue with Danté Stewart, author of Shoutin’ in the Fire: An American Epistle, to explore the themes and craft behind the book. New Names for Stars moves between the intimate and the expansive, engaging Afrofuturism, superheroes, mental health, and social justice while opening conversations with both recent and distant history. Early praise highlights its inventive forms, cosmic imagination, and the way it traces the struggles and triumphs of Black life with both playfulness and elegiac care. Len Lawson is the author of New Names for Stars, winner of the Lit Fox Award, as well as Negro Asylum for the Lunatic Insane and Chime. He co-edited The Future of Black: Afrofuturism, Black Comics, and Superhero Poetry and Hand in Hand: Poets Respond to Race. His work has received fellowships from Tin House Summer Workshop, Palm Beach Poetry Festival, Callaloo Barbados, Vermont Studio Center, and the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts. His poems appear in publications such as African American Review, Callaloo, Mississippi Review, Ninth Letter, and Verse Daily, with international translations. He holds a PhD in English Literature and Criticism from Indiana University of Pennsylvania and an MFA in Creative Writing from Queens University of Charlotte. Based in South Carolina, he serves as Director of African American Studies and Assistant Professor of English at Newberry College. Rev. Danté Stewart is an award-winning writer and the author of Shoutin’ in the Fire: An American Epistle. His work appears in outlets including The Atlantic, the New York Times, the Washington Post, TIME, ESPN, Andscape, Oxford American, Sojourners, NPR, CNN, and MSNBC. His forthcoming ESPN essay about what football means to one small Black rural town is being produced as a documentary, for which he also serves as a writer. Recognitions include Georgia Writer of the Year from the Georgia Writers Association, selection as one of 22 Faith Leaders to Watch by the Center for American Progress, and inclusion on Religion News Service’s list of Ten Up-And-Coming Faith Influencers. He holds a BA in Sociology from Clemson University and an MTS from the Candler School of Theology at Emory University, is an ordained minister, and lives in Georgia with his family.

Modern features 60 card, head-to-head matches and allows cards from the past 20 years of standard releases. The kickoff Modern FNM offers free entry. Entry is $125 per team and includes an exclusive S’morevivor buff for every participant. S’morevivor is open to the entire CSRA, welcoming businesses, families, military personnel, troops, and friend groups to build camaraderie in a fun, challenging, and competitive setting. Three divisions, corporate, community, and Girl Scout troop, recognize top performers with prizes and trophies.
