SUMMER CAMP at the Tallahassee Museum - Secure Your Spot!

Summer Camp registration at the Tallahassee Museum is open, with sessions running through August and limited availability. Guided by the museum’s educators, campers take part in a variety of experiences that build creativity, collaboration, critical thinking, and communication. Activities range from wildlife encounters to explorations of cultural heritage for a well-rounded museum adventure. Register each child for the grade they will enter in the 2026–2027 school year. Children heading into kindergarten should be enrolled in the preschool camp. Online registration closes on the Friday prior to each camp, and space is allocated on a first come first served basis, so early sign up is encouraged. Families receive an email the Friday before camp begins with details for the week, and the Parent Handbook provides additional answers. Extended care is available for an additional fee of $10 per day or $50 per week. If a camp is full, a waiting list is available by emailing registrations@tallahasseemuseum.org with the camper’s name, your name, the grade, the week, and a reliable email address. The program allows one scheduling change if made at least two weeks before the camp date. A $25 administrative fee applies to any extra change or to changes made with less than two weeks’ notice, and a $25 fee applies to incorrect registrations. See the Summer Camp Handbook for full policies. Preschool camp welcomes children ages 3 to 5 who are fully potty trained, including those in preschool, going into VPK, and entering kindergarten. Rising 1st grade and rising 2nd grade sessions are $240 for members and $250 for nonmembers, with some weeks carrying an additional charge. Rising 3rd grade and rising 4th to 5th grade sessions are $290 for members and $300 for nonmembers, with some weeks carrying an additional charge. Third graders go on field trips on Tuesday and Thursday, while fourth and fifth graders travel on Wednesday and Friday. Jr. Counselors in Training for rising 6th to 8th graders are $90 for members and $100 for nonmembers, assist in 1st and 2nd grade classes, remain campers, and are supervised by a teacher at all times. A Counselor in Training program is also available for high school students in grades 9 through 12. Across age groups, Tree to Tree Adventure activities are integrated into the curriculum.

Layers- Leah Macdonald -Art II Reception

Leah Macdonald presents a new series that looks at how images build, recall, and shift through work across photography, printmaking, and encaustic wax. Each piece develops through layered collage, with images added, hidden, revised, and moved so no layer stays permanent. Techniques change from one layer to the next, with painting and photography trading roles and placement to unsettle hierarchy and expectation. Using photographs featuring women, horses, and flowers, the compositions linger between presence and disappearance. The encaustic surface preserves even as it conceals, letting fragments emerge while others fade. By accumulating layers rather than resolving them, the series engages questions of identity, strength, and vulnerability, and meaning arises not from any single image but from the tension and conversation among them.

Michael Trammell w/ Chiefs

Professor Michael Trammell joins publisher Jay Snodgrass for a conversation about Chiefs, his new novel that blends rich humor with epic scope. The story follows Old Crow of the Calusa people as he moves through time and restarts an unfinished game of stickball bound up with questions of fate and mortality. While it plays with lighthearted debates, including nods to Smokey and the Bandit II, the book also grapples with the erasure of a people and the endurance of a restless, waiting community. Its language is musical and layered, weaving together communities, voices, songs, and traditions as it traverses Florida’s vivid and often violent past of changing landscapes, football culture, and clashes among tribes. With Burt Reynolds as a companion figure, the journey invites readers to consider what is real and what feels ghostly. Trammell lives in the Florida panhandle and teaches at Florida State University. His publications include the novel Rad Sick Record, the poetry collection Our Keen Blue House, and the textbook Business Communication Everywhere, with additional work appearing in New Letters, Pleiades, and G.W. Review. He has taught technical writing and professional speaking for over 25 years, serves as an associate editor for the Apalachee Review, and frequently teaches summer courses abroad in London, Florence, or Valencia. Chiefs has been praised by Timothy Daniel Welch, author of Odd Bloom Seen from Space and winner of the Iowa Poetry Prize. Jay Snodgrass is on the English and Humanities faculty at Southern Regional College in Thomasville, Georgia, and serves as publisher and chief editor of Hysterical Press.
