🌌 🚴‍♂️ RIDE THE GALAXY — MAY THE FOURTH! 🚴‍♀️🌌

A Star Wars Day spin rolls out from Dees Brothers Brewery with the Sanford Bicycle Club leading a playful cruise along the Riverwalk and through Sanford, turning this sandy city into a local Outer Rim outpost for the night. Expect a lighthearted scene with lightsabers and foam blasters, plus plenty of cheeky Jedi wisdom carried on the evening air. Costumes are encouraged, whether Jedi, Sith, smuggler, Ewok, or moisture farmer, and regular clothes work too for anyone laying low from the Empire. The pace stays easy enough for riders of many levels, with a route short enough to joke about finishing in fewer than 12 parsecs. Droids and Wookiee friends make excellent company. After the ride, the group returns to the brewery for a screening of Star Wars, blue milk or other refreshments, and spirited debates about who shot first, whether Sanford belongs in the Outer Rim or Wild Space, and why stormtrooper aim never seems to improve even on a bike. Here is to a smooth run worthy of legend.

Along the way, participants can take in ornate Victorian markers, family plots, and names tied to Sanford’s founding era, including merchants, citrus growers, railroad workers, and community leaders. The setting is known for its graceful layout and a quiet that naturally lowers voices. The vibe feels more like soft whispers of the past than jump scares. 5th Annual Sanford's Ride To Freedom

Now in its fifth year, Sanford’s Ride To Freedom is a community cycling experience centered at Historic Hopper Academy. It honors Florida’s Emancipation Day by shining a light on Sanford’s Black history, connecting riders with significant buildings and neighborhoods while encouraging reflection, unity, and pride. The route features landmarks such as Hopper Academy, a historically Black school dating to 1906 in Georgetown, a neighborhood founded by early Black pioneers around 1870. It also explores Georgetown itself, located east of Sanford Avenue and north of Celery Avenue, where lots were sold by Henry Sanford to pioneers arriving from Virginia, the Carolinas, West Florida, and the West Indies, and which was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2020. Midway, also known as Canaan City, traces its roots to a migrant settlement during the celery boom of the 1920s, with residents present as early as 1865 to 1890, and its name shortens “The Midway Point,” the spot between two wells on Sipes Avenue used for drinking water and livestock. Goldsboro, incorporated in 1891 by William Clark, is recognized as the second African American incorporated city in the United States. If the City of Sanford had not annexed it, Central Florida would have counted two all Black incorporated cities, Eatonville and Goldsboro. The ride also highlights Crooms Academy, Seminole County’s first high school for African American students founded in 1926 by Joseph N. Crooms, now operating as Crooms Academy of Information Technology, and Bookertown, once known as Monroe’s Colored Section, where the first African American residents arrived in 1885 to work on the railroads and where streets were named in 1926 for prominent figures in African American history, with the community taking its name from Booker Taliaferro Washington. Additional experiences include a roll along the Sanford/Orlando International Airport terminal curbside for a perspective few rides offer, and time on the Sanford RiverWalk, a waterfront path that began as a sidewalk idea in 1995 and grew into a popular multi use trail and destination.

Awaken & Grow: Learn to Grow Your Own Microgreens with Plant Prana Wellness

Dig into a hands-on workshop with Plant Prana Wellness that explores how to grow, enjoy, and benefit from microgreens. Guided by Joe and Kat Longhany, participants plant a 5-by-5 microgreen grow kit to take home, taste a selection of fresh varieties, and learn practical steps for starting and caring for thriving trays in any home setting. The session also highlights research-backed nutrition insights, including findings that microgreens can contain significantly higher nutrient levels than mature vegetables, in some studies up to 40 times more. Microgreens are tender, early-harvest vegetables with concentrated flavor and nutrients, simple to cultivate, easy to add to everyday meals, and a meaningful addition to a wellness-focused routine. Whether taking first steps or aiming to refine an existing setup, attendees leave with clear techniques, useful tools, and confidence to grow successfully. The presenters are the founders of a Central Florida microgreens farm dedicated to sharing nutrient-dense food with the local community. They regularly connect with families at area farmers markets and lead educational programs that make home growing and plant-forward nutrition straightforward and accessible. Joe, a former university writing professor of 18 years, focuses on turning complex health and nutrition research into practical guidance.
