Children of Eden

Children of Eden brings the opening chapters of Genesis to life in a sweeping musical that closes Ocala Civic Theatre’s 75th season. The story begins in a perfect garden, where Father creates Adam and Eve and every living creature. A wily serpent lures Eve to taste from the Tree of Knowledge, setting in motion the fall from paradise and a new life beyond the walls of Eden. As their family grows, Cain and Abel wrestle with duty and desire, Seth carries the line forward, and generations later Noah is called to build an ark to preserve creation. Noah’s household boards with pairs of animals, while love and loyalty are tested as Japheth’s bond with Yonah, marked by the legacy of Cain, challenges the rules of who may be saved. A multigenerational ensemble animates the animals, the ark, and the world of the play. The production is directed by Greg Thompson, with music direction by Justin Davis and choreography by Debbie McCreight. Design credits include scenic and projections by Evan Frank, costumes by Amanda Jones, lighting by David Castaneda, sound by Alexa Hall, props by Tara Oathout, and puppetry by Clementine. Stage management is by John Paul Anderson Jr. With music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz and a book by John Caird, orchestrations by Bruce Coughlin and Martin Erskine, this uplifting, family friendly show celebrates themes of family, forgiveness, hope, and humor. Collage and Abstract Painting with Seth Benzel

Explore collage and abstract painting in a hands-on workshop led by Seth Benzel, an artist recognized around the world for his dynamic approach to abstraction and clear, accessible instruction. Participants are encouraged to bring personal items for the collage segment, such as papers, newspapers, photographs, prints, and other pieces that can be cut or torn. Consider gathering materials that connect thematically so your composition can tell a story, and mix in different papers and textures to enrich the surface. About the instructor: Originally from New York and working between NYC and Ocala, Florida, Benzel paints primarily with acrylic and often blends in other media, including collage. His practice plays with the tension between architectural lines and free, energetic color, setting the human-made world in conversation with natural or spiritual forces. Rooted in deconstructionist principles, his technique welcomes visible underlayers and happy accidents, aiming for work that is resolved yet open to interpretation, always beginning anew rather than concluding.

Daniel: The Most High Rules

Dance Divine presents a narrative ballet that traces the life of the prophet Daniel, staged at the Charles R. Dassance Fine Arts Center. The story begins with Jerusalem’s conquest by King Nebuchadnezzar, the exile of select young men from Judah, and the removal of sacred temple vessels to Babylon. Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah are trained for service in the royal court and receive new Babylonian names including Belteshazzar, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, yet they remain devoted to God. Scenes portray Daniel interpreting dreams and visions, the refusal of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego to bow to a golden image and their deliverance from a blazing furnace, and Daniel’s service under four kings. The production also revisits Belshazzar’s feast and the mysterious writing that foretold Babylon’s downfall, followed by Daniel’s rescue from the lions after praying under King Darius. Echoing the message of Daniel 2:20-21 about divine wisdom guiding world events, the ballet spans from Nebuchadnezzar’s era to revelations connected to Jesus Christ. Admission is free, no tickets are required, and seating is first come, first served. For more information, call 352-875-9034 or 352-629-6038.
