7 Rivers Water Festival: Cardboard Boat Race

Part of the 7 Rivers Water Festival, this team challenge puts homemade cardboard boats to the test on a looped paddle course. The festival highlights lakes, rivers, and the underground source of drinking water, and this race is one of its family friendly attractions. The action takes place at Martin Luther King Jr Park. Teams build a craft primarily from cardboard and duct tape, then two paddlers launch from the beach, circle the ski jump, and return to shore. Prizes are offered in adult, 18 and older, and youth, under 18, divisions. Awards include the Swift Dinghy for the fastest finish, the Gene Leedy for most creative design, and the Titanic for the most spectacular sinking. Any group can participate, including families and friends. Entry requires a $25 fee and a signed liability waiver. Each team must supply two pilots for the race, while any number of helpers may assist with design and construction. Adults may help youth teams build, but both pilots must be under 18 to compete in the youth division. Space is limited to ten teams per division and registration is first come, first served. Pilots must wear a Type I, II, or III personal flotation device. Teams are encouraged to bring their own, and event staff can provide PFDs if requested ahead of time. Boats and paddles must be built by the team and made mostly of cardboard. Materials that boost buoyancy, including rubber, foam, inflatables, or wood, are not allowed. Duct tape, glue, and contact cement may join pieces, but waterproof coatings on the underside are prohibited, and motors are not permitted. One week before the festival, each team receives a kit with four 4 by 8 foot sheets of cardboard, three rolls of duct tape, a ruler, a utility knife, and two pencils. Extra supplies may be purchased for construction or decoration, and creative themes are welcome as long as designs avoid offensive, political, or inflammatory content. Event staff may disqualify teams that violate the rules, which can include forfeiting the entry fee and possible bans from future events.

Tapestries Lakeland Revisited Show

An art show at the Depot Arts District galleries revisits a landmark public art project that first turned Lakeland’s streets into an open-air gallery in 2018. Forty-three artists created 65 large canvas works known as Un-Murals, installed across Downtown, Midtown, and Dixieland, bringing bursts of color, curiosity, and connection to everyday spaces. This exhibition brings a curated selection of those original pieces into the gallery for the first time, inviting close viewing that reveals details not easily seen from the sidewalk. Artists were encouraged to interpret Lakeland freely, aiming to complement each setting and engage the public, which resulted in a dynamic mix meant to entertain, spark thought, and encourage interaction. Featuring contributions from established, emerging, and student artists, the project showcases the breadth of the local creative community. Originally on view from late 2018 into early 2020, the works became part of the city’s visual identity through support from local organizations, businesses, and community members. This presentation offers a chance to reflect and to document a chapter of the city’s art history. For the first time, select works are available for purchase, turning a temporary public experience into an opportunity for collectors to take home a piece of Lakeland’s cultural story.

Using nervous system regulation and somatic practices, she supports leaders and entrepreneurs in shifting from reactive, stress-based operating to a grounded place that fosters clear thinking, strong communication, and business building from alignment rather than exhaustion. She is the author of The Magic Journal and creator of The Freedom Reset. She teaches from lived experience, moving from chronic overfunctioning to embodied freedom, deep self-trust, and a life rooted in faith. Aerospace Center for Excellence Field Trip @ Lakeland Linder Airport

At the Florida Air Museum, the Aerospace Center for Excellence presents a field trip led by highly trained STEM educators that blends interactive talks, live demonstrations, and grade-specific lab experiments. Programming is centered in the Skylab Innovation Center with sessions in the Science On a Sphere Lab and the Engineering Lab, plus either the Redbird Flight Simulation Lab for students in grades 5 and 6 or exploration of the Florida Air Museum for students in grades 3 and 4. After the structured portion, participants may continue to explore the museum. Moving Through Space takes place in NOAA Science On a Sphere for grades 3 through 6. Students examine Earth’s rotation and revolution and how these motions create the phases of the Moon, program Sphero Bolts to simulate Curiosity’s journey on Mars, and consider how NASA collects and analyzes data from other worlds. Content aligns with Florida education standards. Rocketing to Space is offered in Engineering for grades 3 through 6. Learners investigate how mass, force, and distance relate to space travel by designing and testing straw rockets. This session aligns with Florida education standards. For grades 3 and 4, History and Future of Flight unfolds in the Florida Air Museum and the Aviation Playground. Aircraft, exhibits, and interactive displays are paired with 24 hands-on learning stations in a playground arranged like an airport with taxiways and runways, along with seating for adults and large shade structures. For grades 5 and 6, Flying Fundamentals in the Redbird Flight Simulation Lab uses simulators to demonstrate the aerodynamics that keep an airplane straight and level and highlights the industry’s need for nearly 300,000 new pilots over the next decade. Both experiences align with Florida education standards. The day continues at the Pavilion with a paper airplane competition hosted by Busy Bee. Each student receives a goody bag that includes a pilot license, paper airplane supplies, and additional items provided by Busy Bee, along with a completion certificate. Tickets are $25 per student participant or 125 Bee Bucks, and $10 per participating chaperone or 50 Bee Bucks. Capacity is limited to 20 student tickets and 2 participating chaperone tickets. Add a non-participating chaperone ticket to the order when an adult will attend without taking part so each child’s parent or chaperone is accounted for. Additional guests or siblings may visit the Florida Air Museum with tickets purchased separately at the museum’s ticket office.

Walter Parks at Gram Parsons Derry Down

Gram Parsons Derry Down hosts guitarist and songwriter Walter Parks, whose original pieces and tributes are rooted in the soundscape of the Okefenokee Swamp near his North Florida upbringing. His research and fresh interpretations of hollers, hymns, and reels from swamp homesteaders are preserved in the Library of Congress American Folklife Collection. Over a decade he toured and recorded around the globe with Woodstock legend Richie Havens, appearing at Carnegie Hall, Madison Square Garden, and the Glastonbury Festival. He later served as Judy Collins’s sole accompanist during her Lincoln Center salute to Pete Seeger. Parks leads two Americana-driven groups, Swamp Cabbage with its electric folk rock edge and The Unlawful Assembly with its reimagined spirituals. Now based in St. Louis, he co-produces The Concert at The Burroak with his wife, Margo. Admirers such as JJ Grey, Judy Collins, and Ken Rockwood have lauded his rare combination of songwriting, vocal expression, and guitar mastery, describing performances that move from intimate nuance to full-throttle power.
