Firefly Self Guided Hike

Oakland Nature Preserve offers select evenings for visitors to wander the boardwalk and search for fireflies. A staff member will be stationed at the start of the boardwalk to answer questions. Parking is available in the grass overflow lot, and when the main lot is full, vehicles should park perpendicular along the driveway outside the gate. The adjacent school or church lot that shares the driveway is not available for guests, and vehicles parked there can be locked in. Admission is free, and donations are appreciated to support preserve upkeep and programming. As a courtesy to others, please avoid using flashlights, phone lights, or flash photography, and plan for mosquitoes. Do not touch, collect, or otherwise disturb fireflies or any wildlife. Bug spray is not permitted because it can kill mosquitoes and delicate fireflies. Pets are not allowed, and smoking is prohibited anywhere on the boardwalk or preserve due to dry, hot conditions and fire risk. Volunteers wearing high-visibility vests and name tags will be along the boardwalk, and any rule violations should be reported so issues can be addressed for everyone’s safety and comfort. If the weather turns, the event may be canceled, and day-of updates can be found on the preserve’s Facebook page.

Plant Street Academy hosts an open house and homeschool seminar created for parents who are exploring home education or already on that path and seeking clarity, structure, and support. Begin by touring the academy to see how it functions, meet the team, explore the space, and ask questions to get a sense of what a child’s experience there could be. The evening continues with a practical session for those who have decided to homeschool and want clear next steps, led by lead educator Dorothea Holcomb. Topics include what homeschooling truly looks like, a straightforward overview of Florida requirements, how to choose a learning approach and curriculum without overwhelm, realistic ways to structure the day, ensuring children stay social and engaged, and a simple 30 day plan to get started. The guidance is based on real experience. This event is designed for parents considering homeschooling, families feeling unsure of where to begin, current homeschoolers seeking structure, support, and community, and anyone interested in a more personalized educational path for their child. Shop, Dine & Stroll

Raffle excitement fills the Winter Garden Downtown Historic District during the annual Shop, Dine & Stroll. Shoppers and diners can earn entries for prizes at participating businesses, along with a chance at a grand prize cash gift card valued up to $500. Presented by downtown merchants and the City of Winter Garden, the day welcomes everyone and offers opportunities to pick up gifts for Mother’s Day and graduations, refresh a spring and summer wardrobe or home, and enjoy the blooming seasonal scenery. To take part in Raffle May-nia, look for the raffle sign in the windows of participating stores and restaurants. Any purchase earns a raffle ticket, and every additional $25 spent earns another. Entries can accumulate across multiple shops and restaurants, and the QR code on the tickets provides an easy online form for the drawings. A commemorative reusable tote bag awaits the first 20 customers who make a purchase at each participating retail store. One of those bags at each shop includes a $20 store gift card, adding another surprise for a lucky shopper. Centennial Plaza becomes a hub for live performances featuring Sammy Vélez and EarthTonez Trio. Vélez, a longtime presence in Latin music, has toured with acts such as Menudo, Tommy Torres, and Pedro Capó, and now creates in Orlando while celebrating his Puerto Rican roots. EarthTonez Trio, also Orlando based, blends soul, jazz, alternative, and hip hop into an energetic set whether playing original songs or covers. Parking is free throughout Downtown Winter Garden, with convenient options along West Plant Street, in a three level garage, a 117 space lot, and at City Hall. The festivities take place rain or shine. Merchant hours, raffle participation, and promotions vary by location, and each establishment determines its own involvement. Be cautious of fraudulent online solicitations that claim to recruit outside vendors for city events. The City of Winter Garden is not seeking outside vendors for this occasion, so do not share information or make payments in response to such messages.

Meet-and-Greet Adorable Adoptables

Meet a few of The Animal League’s adoptable dogs at the newly opened Petco in Clermont. Adoptable cats are also housed at this location. Team Meow volunteers host meet-and-greets, and cats can be viewed during regular store hours. Store employees cannot facilitate petting or holding, so appointments with the adoption team are required to meet individual cats.
