Archaeological Society of Delaware: New Castle Chapter Speaker Series

Keith R. Doms presents a summary of archaeological work conducted inside the Newlin Grist Mill, an 18th century grist mill in Delaware County, Pennsylvania, during 2020 to 2024. Archaeology within a working mill is uncommon, and this research unfolded while the rebuilding of the water box and water wheel was monitored and while flood remediation was underway. These unusual conditions revealed traces from the mill’s earliest years. The talk is sponsored by the Archaeological Society of Delaware and the Bear Public Library, and it is free and open to the public.

Wilmington Art Loop Photography Exhibit Anthomania Reimagined With Christina Peters

At the Delaware Center for Horticulture, photographer Christina Peters presents Anthomania Reimagined as part of the Wilmington Art Loop. This body of work reimagines floral still life as lyrical imagery, drawing on Dutch painting for inspiration. Peters sources flowers from farms across the United States and cares for each stem so the blooms reach their peak together. She composes every scene in the studio with antique props, classical arrangements, and controlled artificial light. The images are made entirely in camera, with digital touchups limited to removing dust or flaws and preparing files for print. The photographs invite unhurried looking and are intended to evoke joy, calm, and a sense of connection. Through intimate floral portraits, the series explores memory, the pull of beauty, and the fleeting nature of living things. The Wilmington Art Loop offers a free, self-guided way to experience galleries, studios, museums, and alternative spaces throughout Wilmington. Attendees can meet featured artists, enjoy occasional entertainment, and find beer, wine, and canned cocktails for purchase, with light charcuterie available. DelArt Film Society: 90s Festival Favorites

Film festivals of the 1990s helped propel independent cinema into the spotlight by connecting filmmakers with wider audiences and industry attention. Events such as Sundance and Cannes championed inventive, low budget work and introduced directors who continue to shape the art form. As their influence grew, these festivals amplified international perspectives and varied approaches to storytelling. While the emergence of studio specialty labels and a more commercial circuit narrowed some opportunities by the decade’s end, festivals remain a vital home for independent film, and the early 90s boom stands as an essential chapter in film history. This screening program reflects that era through two acclaimed features. The Double Life of Veronique (1991) follows two women, one in Poland and one in France, whose lives are mysteriously intertwined despite never meeting. It received the FIPRESCI Prize at the 1991 Cannes Film Festival and was nominated for the Palme d’Or. The Piano (1993) tells the story of a mute woman sent to New Zealand with her young daughter and cherished piano for an arranged marriage to a farmer, and the entanglements that develop with a local farm worker. It won the Palme d’Or at the 1993 Cannes Film Festival. Outside food and drinks are not permitted. Water bottles are welcome, and a refill station is located near the auditorium.

DelArt Film Society: 90s Festival Favorites

A film series spotlighting festival favorites from the 1990s, reflecting on a decade when showcases like Sundance and Cannes helped independent cinema reach wider audiences and industry decision-makers. These platforms elevated inventive, low-budget work, introduced new filmmakers, and amplified international voices and diverse storytelling. The momentum led to a wave of notable films from creators who continue to shape the medium. Although the rise of studio specialty divisions and a more commercial festival landscape narrowed some opportunities later in the decade, festivals remain a vital avenue for independent film and the early 90s surge remains a key chapter in film history. The lineup features The Double Life of Veronique (1991), which follows two identical women living in Poland and France who never meet yet share a mysterious connection. It received the FIPRESCI Prize at the 1991 Cannes Film Festival and was nominated for the Palme d’Or. Andrea Chénier

Inspired by the life of poet André Chénier, this gripping Italian verismo opera follows an artist who risks speaking truth to power as the world slides into turmoil and violence. His poetry becomes a rallying cry for freedom and love over fear and oppression. When he falls for the noblewoman Maddalena and collides with the implacable revolutionary Gérard, a tragic love triangle forms with destiny hanging in the balance. Giordano’s score brims with opulent melodies, rich orchestration, and unforgettable arias, moving from the tender glow of “Come un bel dì di maggio” to a searing final duet. Staged with a full orchestra and a commanding chorus, and featuring the voices of OperaDelaware Company Artists, this production is set to light up the stage at the Grand Opera House in Wilmington. It offers a rare chance to encounter this lavish and seldom performed work in all its intensity.

Little Feat: The Last Farewell Tour

Little Feat brings The Last Farewell Tour to The Grand Opera House, a run that marks a gradual step back from long-haul travel while the band continues to perform and make new music. The group began in 1969 when Frank Zappa encouraged Lowell George to form his own band, soon joined by Bill Payne and Richie Hayward, and later by Kenny Gradney, Sam Clayton, Paul Barrere, and Fred Tackett. Along the way they created favorites like "Dixie Chicken," "Oh, Atlanta," "Willin'," and "Fat Man in the Bathtub," as well as the live album Waiting for Columbus. The story has included loss with the passings of George, Hayward, and Barrere, and new chapters with Scott Sharrard and Tony Leone stepping in. Their signature blend of rock, New Orleans swamp boogie, jazz, and blues remains at the core, and they have continued to record, including the recent album of original material Strike Up the Band. This tour celebrates a remarkable legacy while easing off the demands of constant touring, giving the bus a much needed rest.

Tall Poppy String Band - Old-Time Music with a Modern Pulse

Progressive Acoustics presents an intimate night of old time string band music with the internationally recognized Tall Poppy String Band at Huxley and Hiro Prose Parlor. The intimate Prose Parlor, set one floor above Huxley and Hiro Booksellers, offers a focused space for an acoustic concert. The trio dives into American string band traditions with a spirit of exploration. Their performance feels more like a conversation than a formal recital as they revisit classics such as The Coo Coo and Cumberland Gap, reshape source material, play with shifting rhythms, and trade the usual roles among instruments. The sound ranges from sweeping to soulful, fueled by close musical chemistry and vivid interplay between fiddle and banjo. Fiddler George Jackson brings IBMA-recognized artistry and is a three-time Australian National Bluegrass Champion based in Nashville. Guitarist Morgan Harris blends melody and pulse to echo the drone and drive of historic fiddle and banjo pairings. Banjoist Cameron DeWhitt is a leading clawhammer player who hosts the Get Up in the Cool podcast. The result is music that stimulates the mind and moves the feet in a room made for careful listening.
