Wake Up Wednesday

Wake Up Wednesday is a weekly community effort in Hartford led by the Greater Hartford NAACP. It began with sharing food and has grown into a broad outreach that now reaches hundreds of neighbors. Each Wednesday, people can pick up no cost groceries, enjoy freshly made meals such as cookouts and grinders, and find free clothing for all ages along with basic household items and hygiene necessities. Access is simple, with help available without paperwork or screening. Partners set up on site to connect people with practical resources. Support includes job and reentry assistance for those with records or gaps in employment, legal services from Greater Hartford Legal Aid, harm reduction through CTHRA with Narcan kits, clean syringes, and overdose prevention tools, and housing and recovery options for anyone seeking stability or treatment. The approach centers on face to face conversations in everyday places, restoring dignity and strengthening neighborly care. Settle into an evening of deep relaxation led by yoga teacher Amy Thompson, E-RYT 500, in collaboration with The Conduit Center and musicians from The Conduit. The session includes an opening meditation, a restorative sound healing immersion, and a closing meditation. Singing bowls, chimes, gongs, and other instruments create soothing layers of sound while the space is infused with professional grade essential oils. This sound healing blends rest with mindful attention. Participants lie down and slow the breath to receive the sound, then stay gently aware of each tone as it arrives, similar to how a mantra supports stillness in meditation. The practice uses only comfortable positions such as seated and savasana, making it accessible to both yoga practitioners and newcomers. Many people bring a blanket and pillow, dress in layers for comfort, and relax on yoga mats. Cost is $35 in advance and $40 on the same day. ASL Infused - Little Shop of Horrors

The Little Theatre of Manchester reunites with Connecticut Deaf Theatre for a fully accessible, ASL-integrated staging of the cult musical Little Shop of Horrors. The story follows gentle shop assistant Seymour Krelborn and the unusual plant he names Audrey II, a rapidly growing curiosity with a frightening appetite that lures him with the promise of fame. Expect the pulse of a doo-wop street chorus, the antics of a wicked dentist, and a vivid production that blends spoken and sung English with American Sign Language in every scene. ASL-infused means the cast signs and voices the show together onstage at all times, rather than using interpreters on the side or a format where signing lags behind the action. Deaf and hard of hearing audiences have full access throughout, and hearing audiences experience the complete English text alongside the signing. Seating is general admission at $24, with a $2 discount for seniors, students, and military, and additional savings for groups of ten or more. Revolution to Recreation: Jane's Walk and Urban Sketching

A free Jane’s Walk explores Hartford’s Burr Mall, a modernist landscape by Dan Kiley that features a Calder sculpture. Participants observe the plaza, share impressions, and consider Jane Jacobs inspired questions about urban vitality, public space, and democratic design. No prior knowledge is needed, just curiosity. After a 30 minute stroll, an urban sketching session invites everyone to capture the setting with sketchbooks, pencils, pens, or watercolors. Subjects might include Calder’s Stegosaurus, the Beaux Arts Municipal Building, the Wadsworth Atheneum, people using the space, or whatever catches the eye, followed by a casual show and tell. Meet by the George Washington plaque outside the Wadsworth Atheneum. The route is fully accessible with level, paved walkways and curb cuts, and the plaza has no steps or obstacles. It is free and open to all, with no registration required, and will be held rain or shine. An optional Mexican lunch at El Pollo Guapo is planned afterward.

Antique Shop Open This Weekend

In the historic town of Farmington, Connecticut, Antiq’s is a long-standing, privately owned antique shop that operates in a traditional, hands-on way. Instead of dealer booths or rows of locked cases, the floor features carefully chosen early American and Victorian pieces you can examine up close, with an emphasis on authentic works from the 1700s and 1800s. Expect period furniture, lighting, porcelain, silver, and paintings, including examples such as a George III dining table with 14 matching shield-back chairs and a changing selection of early paintings. The collection is presented for serious collectors and professionals who value genuine antiques over later vintage items. Discerning private buyers from Connecticut, New York, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and beyond, along with established dealers seeking fresh, high-quality material, will find inventory that has not been picked over in group shops. Antiq’s has served the area since 1990 and maintains a welcoming, no-pressure atmosphere that recalls the classic owner-operated shops many thought had disappeared.

Wake Up Wednesday

A weekly grassroots outreach hosted by the Greater Hartford NAACP focuses on community care, direct relief, and real-time support in Hartford. What began as a simple food giveaway has grown into a robust effort that now assists hundreds of neighbors. Each week, residents can pick up free groceries and freshly prepared meals like cookouts or grinders, find clothing for all ages and seasons, and take home household and hygiene essentials. No paperwork is required, and support is available whether someone is facing food insecurity or just navigating a tough stretch. On-site community partners offer practical resources, including job help and reentry support for people with records or employment gaps, legal services through Greater Hartford Legal Aid, harm reduction tools through CTHRA such as Narcan, clean syringes, and overdose prevention supplies, and guidance on housing and recovery for those seeking stability or treatment. The aim is to meet people where they are, in familiar spaces and through face-to-face connection. For many, this weekly gathering serves as a lifeline that restores dignity and strengthens a culture of neighbors looking out for one another. Those who wish to help can contribute by donating, volunteering, or sharing the word, whether as a local business, a concerned resident, or someone who has benefited and wants to give back.

Jordan Loder

Experience an evening of devotional kirtan with Jordan Loder, an international artist whose chanting arises from openness and heartfelt presence. His gatherings cultivate community through contemporary call and response grounded in timeless bhakti traditions. Gentle invocations invite the heart to soften, rhythmic chanting builds shared uplift, and quiet pauses encourage inner stillness and a feeling of oneness. The atmosphere is sincere and unpretentious, carried by humility, a touch of gentle humor, and an easy lightness. Jordan’s path has been shaped by deep immersion in the global kirtan community, including tours with Snatam Kaur, Deva Premal and Miten, GuruGanesha, Simrit, Ajeet, The Landis Brothers, Hans Christian, Stephen Bross, Matt Pszonak, and Adam Bauer. He is influenced by the teachings of Ramana Maharshi, first encountered in youth and later deepened through pilgrimage and an extended stay near Arunachala, weaving Hindu and Buddhist mantras that honor forgiveness, gratitude, and compassion. A $30 donation supports the musicians, with 15 percent directed to the house for ongoing upkeep. Advance reservation and donation are requested to secure a spot and receive location details. Antique Shop Open This Weekend

In the historic town of Farmington, Connecticut, ANTIQ'S keeps the traditional, family run antique shop alive. There are no dealer stalls and no rows of locked cases, and the selection is not 1970s vintage presented as antique. The rooms are filled with carefully chosen pieces from the 18th and 19th century, including furniture, lighting, porcelain, silver, and paintings, presented with integrity for collectors who value enduring quality over trends. Explore the collection hands on by feeling the wood of a period high chest, opening the drawers of a Federal secretary, lifting an original Federal mirror, and sitting at a George III dining table with fourteen matching shield back chairs. Look over newly arrived early paintings and take in works that have become hard to find as many independent shops have disappeared. This gathering speaks to two groups, seasoned private buyers from Connecticut, New York, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and beyond who are tired of finding newer items mislabeled as antiques, and established dealers focused on important early material who want fresh, high quality merchandise that has not been picked over in group shops. In operation since 1990, it is described as the only privately owned antique shop in the area featuring authentic early American and Victorian pieces in a friendly, low pressure atmosphere. It offers a chance to reconnect with the spirit of antiquing from decades past, paired with today’s expertise and eye.

Watts Music Group Presents: PEAK Live at Main Pub

PEAK brings its Psychedelic Indie Funk to The Main Pub, weaving poetic melodies, moody electrofunk textures, riff-driven blues-rock, and exploratory grooves built for dancing. The Brooklyn-based project began in 2016 when guitarist and songwriter Jeremy Hilliard started performing and touring under the PEAK name. In 2018 he released the debut album Electric Bouquet, produced by Dave Brandwein of Turkuaz, and by 2019 the lineup solidified with drummer Kito Bovenschulte of Particle, bassist Josh T. Carter of Hayley Jane and The Primates, and keyboardist Johnny Young. Their inspirations span The Band, Talking Heads, Phish, the Grateful Dead, Radiohead, James Brown, Miles Davis, and contemporary songwriters including Conor Oberst, Mac Demarco, Kurt Vile, and Jack White. Hilliard first made his mark as bandleader and lead guitarist of Turbine, creating four studio albums and touring nationally with appearances at festivals such as Bonnaroo, Telluride Music Festival, Gathering of the Vibes, and Moedown. His songwriting is lyric-forward and broad in mood, and his guitar work draws on early influences like BB King and Jimi Hendrix, expanding with jazz ideas to build longer, more intricate musical narratives. Johnny Young, a longtime friend who began co-writing with Hilliard in 2018, is a vocalist, keyboardist, producer, and composer known throughout the New York scene. His strong sense of harmony and natural rapport with Hilliard have helped elevate the group, and he has been blind since the age of 17. Bovenschulte powers the rhythm section, having emerged from the Tri-State scene with Fikus and, since 2016, serving as drummer for Jamtronica pioneers Particle on national and international tours. Carter, also recognized for work with Sundub, anchors the low end with precision and a keen ear. With his arrival the band locked in the sound they were seeking and began developing a second album slated for recording in 2020.

Cinderella takes the spotlight in a full-scale theatrical ballet from World Ballet Company, bringing the classic story to life with humor, romance, and the grandeur of classical dance. Look for comic turns from the notorious stepsisters, glittering ballroom sequences, and a whirlwind transformation when the clock nears midnight. A cast of 40 international artists performs choreography by Marina Kesler, framed by carefully crafted sets and more than 150 meticulously sewn costumes. The performance runs about two hours, including a 20-minute intermission, and is for ages 2 and up. World Ballet Company is based in Los Angeles and led by Sasha Gorskaya and Gulya Hartwick. The troupe tours beloved ballets to cities across the country, welcoming both newcomers and longtime ballet fans, and features professional dancers representing over ten countries. To date, the company has appeared in more than 300 cities and performed for an audience totaling more than 500,000.

CT Wedding Vendor Group Meetup #2

The second meetup for Connecticut wedding vendors arrives with a fresh personality. The first gathering at Serenity Woods centers on a beautiful, elevated, full experience, while this edition leans casual, outdoorsy, and a touch wild in the best way. Set in Farmington beneath covered pavilions, it offers fresh air, good energy, and just enough time to mingle, make connections, and keep things moving without overthinking. Expect food, drinks, and music, plus a bit of shopping and easygoing networking that leads to those we-should-be-working-together moments. There is a call for food and drink sponsors and for vendors interested in popping up to showcase their work. Bring business cards, some spending money, and the side of your personality that rarely comes out at bridal expos. This is not stiff, forced networking. It is a space to find your people, line up referrals, and build a future dream team, keeping the mission the same while the mood shifts.

Stowe Prize Series: The Phillips Manuscript and “James: A Novel” (HYBRID)

This installment of the Stowe Prize Series focuses on the ways storytelling shapes our understanding of freedom and history. The program places the newly discovered Phillips Manuscript, which chronicles the life of Dr. William H. Phillips, alongside Percival Everett’s award-winning novel James. He was born enslaved in Virginia in 1841 and later became a nationally known minister at Shiloh Baptist Church in Philadelphia. His life connects to defining moments of the 19th century and highlights the resolve, courage, and intellect of Black Americans before and after emancipation. Everett’s novel revisits the story of Huck Finn from Jim’s perspective, creating a thoughtful dialogue with the manuscript. The Phillips Manuscript will be available to view throughout the series. Together these works invite consideration of a central question, what role do storytelling and narrative play in how we understand the past and the culture we live in now?
