Experience an all-level samba class with Rocío Cristal that welcomes newcomers and seasoned dancers alike to explore Brazil’s celebrated dance and music. Build a solid foundation with core steps, targeted drills to refine technique and stamina, and lively combinations that connect movement to cultural context. The setting is supportive and upbeat, encouraging confidence while moving to the vibrant pulse of samba. The focus extends beyond choreography to community, self-expression, and shared appreciation of Brazilian heritage. Wear comfortable activewear and sneakers, and bring a water bottle. Drop-in participation is $15. Rocío Cristal is a Puerto Rican dance artist, educator, choreographer, percussionist, and vocalist with 14 years of samba training under leading Brazilian artists. Her credits include performances in Rio de Janeiro’s Sambódromo as Primeira Musa for Unidos da Ponte and Acadêmicos de Vigário Geral, and as a Passista with Estácio de Sá, União da Ilha, and Inocentes de Belford Roxo. She has performed as a ritmista with the bloco Vagalume o Verde, parading twice in Rio’s street Carnaval. Her leadership includes directing parades in Arcata and Seattle and teaching samba for 12 years across California, Texas, Puerto Rico, and online. In 2023 she organized a cultural and dance trip from Humboldt to Rio, where a dozen students trained with master teachers and took part in the world’s biggest Carnaval. Ensemble work includes Samba da Alegría Arcata, where she served as Dance Director for five NCF parades, as well as Austin Samba School’s Passista ala, Samba Floresta, MeliSamba, BateLata, Olio, SambAmore, and Bloco Pacifico. She views samba as a practice that strengthens community, fosters self-discovery, and supports healing through enduring ancestral traditions.

One diver descends 25,000 feet beneath the ocean and encounters a mysterious force with the power to reshape or destroy the world. The event includes a curated pre-show with themed content such as cartoons, short films, trivia, behind-the-scenes footage, retro PSAs, and other surprises. Admission includes one ticket to a free raffle with prizes that may include movie tickets, figurines, posters, books, cards, VHS tapes, and more for sci-fi fans and collectors. Seating in the picnic section is limited to a few tables, so bringing a favorite lawn chair is recommended. Gates open, the picnic in right field gets underway, then the first pitch follows. To honor Gay Pride Month, the Clarke Historical Museum presents a sparkling night of drag featuring five local artists spanning queens, kings, and monsters. The show spotlights Komboujia, Glitterous Clitterous, Cocky Muffington, Kill Pop, and Mr. Gino, with Val de Flores guiding the evening as emcee. Beyond the performances, attendees can explore mini exhibits that share Humboldt’s Queer history, including a pop-up in the Emmerson/Victorian Room that looks at drag in the Victorian era through profiles of three queens and three kings, plus a special Two-Spirits exhibit on loan from the Wiyot Cultural Center. Living histories, photos, and performer costumes will also be on view. Complimentary snacks will be provided, and a no host bar will offer red, white, and sparkling wine, Pink Pony Punch, and non-alcoholic choices. Tickets are $30 for Clarke Museum members and $40 for non-members and are available through the museum. Anyone attending in full drag can receive a $30 ticket at the door. Two performances bring the Brothers Grimm tale to life as an original classical ballet presented by The Dance Scene Studio and Sundance Ballet Company in their 13th annual recital at the Eureka High Auditorium. Under the direction of Carrie Badeaux, Miles Grant and Lily Cunningham appear as Hansel and Gretel, with Isadora Guimaraes as the Forest Witch, supported by about two hundred performers that include company dancers, apprentices, Junior Company members, and students. Hand-built props, interactive set pieces, and locally painted backdrops create a candy-filled world, while a varied classical score guides the story of two siblings who outwit a witch. Expect pointe work inspired by Giselle, whimsical moments with gingerbread, cupcake, and gumdrop characters, and narrative scenes that follow the children’s adventure. The ballet is family friendly, though a brief sequence showing the witch’s comic downfall may be intense for very young children. After intermission, the program expands beyond the Hansel and Gretel theme with Jazz, K-POP, Tap, Lyrical, Hip Hop, Belly Dance, and Contemporary pieces. The regionally award-winning Scene Team performs three works by choreographer and coach Brittney Christensen, and the evening concludes with Aesthetics, a 12-minute multimedia work by Carrie Badeaux that reflects on how people are drawn to different movement vocabularies, including a Middle Eastern section dedicated to Ania Vogel. The entire event runs about two hours with a fifteen-minute intermission and is recommended for ages three and up. Pre-sale tickets are $10 for children 12 and under and $20 for adults, with at-the-door prices of $15 and $25.

Framed as an elaborate heist, it skewers capitalism and the fashion industry while elevating themes of friendship, community, and solidarity. The Playlist calls it “an unexpected celebration of friendship, community, and solidarity.” This limited engagement spans three screenings. The premiere is presented in collaboration with Black Humboldt as part of a Juneteenth Festival, with half of proceeds supporting the local nonprofit, followed by two Tuesday encore showings. On Tuesdays, the bar offers grassfed beef or cacao black bean tacos, two full-size for $5 with a drink purchase. Samba do Mar Humboldt and Samba da Alegria present a series of parade dance classes with Maria that prepare participants for the 40th anniversary of the Humboldt Samba Parade at the North Country Fair. The training centers on Samba no Pé, the Rio de Janeiro footwork style seen in Samba Schools, with attention to cultural context, technique, style, and musicality, including practice with live percussion. Dancers learn the parade choreography, build performance confidence, and connect through a welcoming community experience. Open to adults and teens of all experience levels, the series meets at Redwood Raks Collective World Dance Studio and at the McKinleyville Activity Center. Pre registration is not required and signups happen at the first class. The cost is $17 per class or $150 for the full series, with work trade and scholarships available. Separate parade registration and costume fees apply, and dancers must attend at least six classes to participate in the parade. Comfortable dance attire is recommended, such as leggings or shorts with a breathable top, and either bare feet or dance sneakers. The parade takes place at the North Country Fair on the Arcata Plaza, and the theme, Deep Roots, Wild Spirit, honors four decades of local samba and the region’s natural beauty. Instructor Maria Vandehorst has studied Samba no Pé and Afro Brazilian dance since 2000 in Brazil and the United States with numerous teachers. She trains with Alex Coutinho, who directs passistas for Paraíso do Tuiuti and founded the global Poderosas do Samba project, and she serves as Artistic Director for Samba do Mar Humboldt with many years of experience directing the parade’s dance sections.

Free Limitless Energy highlights the acoustic side, drawing on Garcia, Grisman, and more for a bluegrass-soaked set. The music flows in stages, beginning with Free Limitless Energy, followed by DJ Logic & Friends, and closing with Rosewater. Repair Café returns to Eureka with a free community repair event at the Adorni Community and Recreation Center. Part of an international effort to keep useful belongings in circulation, skilled volunteers work alongside attendees to diagnose and fix items so they can enjoy a second life and stay out of the landfill. Participants may bring items that can be carried without assistance and will take them home afterward. Bringing any parts or materials needed for the repair is helpful. Common examples include bicycles, laptops, lamps, clothing, jewelry, stereos, small wooden furniture, and similar repairable goods.
