Experience an all-level samba class with Rocío Cristal that welcomes newcomers and seasoned dancers alike to explore Brazil’s celebrated dance and music. Build a solid foundation with core steps, targeted drills to refine technique and stamina, and lively combinations that connect movement to cultural context. The setting is supportive and upbeat, encouraging confidence while moving to the vibrant pulse of samba. The focus extends beyond choreography to community, self-expression, and shared appreciation of Brazilian heritage. Wear comfortable activewear and sneakers, and bring a water bottle. Drop-in participation is $15. Rocío Cristal is a Puerto Rican dance artist, educator, choreographer, percussionist, and vocalist with 14 years of samba training under leading Brazilian artists. Her credits include performances in Rio de Janeiro’s Sambódromo as Primeira Musa for Unidos da Ponte and Acadêmicos de Vigário Geral, and as a Passista with Estácio de Sá, União da Ilha, and Inocentes de Belford Roxo. She has performed as a ritmista with the bloco Vagalume o Verde, parading twice in Rio’s street Carnaval. Her leadership includes directing parades in Arcata and Seattle and teaching samba for 12 years across California, Texas, Puerto Rico, and online. In 2023 she organized a cultural and dance trip from Humboldt to Rio, where a dozen students trained with master teachers and took part in the world’s biggest Carnaval. Ensemble work includes Samba da Alegría Arcata, where she served as Dance Director for five NCF parades, as well as Austin Samba School’s Passista ala, Samba Floresta, MeliSamba, BateLata, Olio, SambAmore, and Bloco Pacifico. She views samba as a practice that strengthens community, fosters self-discovery, and supports healing through enduring ancestral traditions.

Sci-Fi Night spotlights The Abyss (1989) Special Edition, following a civilian oil rig crew sent to assist after a nuclear submarine mysteriously sinks. One diver descends 25,000 feet beneath the ocean and encounters a mysterious force with the power to reshape or destroy the world. The event includes a curated pre-show with themed content such as cartoons, short films, trivia, behind-the-scenes footage, retro PSAs, and other surprises. Admission includes one ticket to a free raffle with prizes that may include movie tickets, figurines, posters, books, cards, VHS tapes, and more for sci-fi fans and collectors. Themed cocktails and limited-edition movie posters are available. Admission is $6, or $10 with a poster. Rated R. Running time is 2 hours and 50 minutes. All ages are welcome, with a parent or guardian suggested for those 15 and under.
