Food Box Distribution for Kin/Foster/Adoptive Families

ASA Now offers a monthly food distribution at Jacob’s Mission Community Center focused on kinship, foster, and adoptive families. The program provides Mission Boxes that ease grocery costs and support children in building a healthier, more secure relationship with food, especially for those who have experienced food insecurity or trauma. Eligible participants include caregivers currently caring for children in foster care as well as families who have adopted children previously involved with the child welfare system. Each box features perishable staples such as bread, milk, meat, fresh produce, frozen items, and baked goods from partners including Trader Joe’s, Safeway, Midwest Food Bank, and Panera Bread. The goal is to lighten household expenses and create room for special moments or needed items that might otherwise be out of reach.

Flash Without Fear – Mastering Your On-Camera Flash

Learn to take control of your on‑camera flash in a focused, hands-on workshop designed for photographers who already understand aperture, shutter speed, and ISO but want reliable, repeatable results with flash. It serves as a natural next step after a beginner photography course and encourages you to approach lighting with a professional mindset. This class welcomes beginner to intermediate shooters who know the basics of exposure, feel frustrated by inconsistent flash outcomes, or are ready to move off auto settings. It is not intended for absolute beginners who have not yet learned exposure. By the end, you will be able to balance ambient and flash light, set flash power with intention, bounce for soft indoor illumination, avoid the harsh direct-flash look, use gels to match color, and create a properly exposed, polished portrait with your own gear. The format is practical and immersive, with enrollment limited to seven photographers. A live model is provided, instruction is step by step, and you will cycle through shooting and adjusting while receiving real-time corrections and personalized feedback. Expect to leave with a well-balanced flash portrait you made yourself. Building this skill brings confidence for events, indoor sessions, and other low-light situations. The cost is $65. Please bring a DSLR or mirrorless camera, a charged battery, a memory card, and an on-camera flash. Classes will be canceled if there are no paid signups by the Friday before class.

AdvoCAT Academy Summer Camp

The National Cat Advocate Academy summer camp invites kids ages 7 to 13 into a creative, cat-centered experience designed by Missy, founder of She’s All Cat. With a background in animal welfare and community education, she launched Arizona’s first cat café, La Gattara, now Phoenix Cat Cafe, and has led Cat Camp programs across the state since 2017. This expanded program focuses on compassion, confidence, and real-world impact. Each day blends playful learning with purpose as campers explore feline behavior and communication, dive into hands-on crafts, storytelling, and advocacy projects, enjoy art sessions alongside friendly felines and kid-friendly cat yoga, meet adoptable cats through local rescue partners, and hear from visiting veterinarians and behavior specialists. Mascots Chicky Nuggie and Waffles bring extra smiles along the way. The week concludes with a graduation that recognizes every participant as a National Cat Advocate graduate and superhero. A season-ending showcase gathers nine camp groups from across Arizona to share what they learned, present in creative ways, and celebrate a growing community of young advocates.
