BookTalk Bookclub: Atmosphere by Taylor Jenkins Reid

A discussion focuses on Atmosphere, which follows Joan Goodwin, a physics professor and astronomer who wants more than academic life. In the early 1980s, as NASA begins recruiting women scientists for the Space Shuttle program, she is selected and trains with a standout peer, Vanessa Ford. Joan confronts sexism, demanding personal tradeoffs, and family duties, especially to her niece Frances, while slowly acknowledging a love she has kept private. The story reaches a critical moment in December 1984 during mission STS-LR9, when an in orbit emergency erupts and Joan, serving as CAPCOM in Mission Control, supports the crew while balancing intense emotions with professional responsibility. Larger field activities bring these ideas together by showing how the hot springs water cycle functions and why protecting the recharge zone is important. Free for members.

Wish Wednesday

Wish Wednesday is a day of giving at Buff City Soap - Hot Springs in partnership with Make-A-Wish Mid-South, held in recognition of World Wish Day. Fifteen percent of all sales all day will benefit Make-A-Wish Mid-South. A featured Wishy Washy soap bar is available, with three dollars from each bar supporting the cause. The IBLA Foundation, based in New York City, presents annual competitions in Ragusa Ibla, Italy for pianists, composers, singers, and instrumentalists, and its winners have been showcased at venues including Weill Hall at Carnegie Hall, Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center, Kioi Hall, and Tokyo Opera City Hall. IBLA musicians will appear at Grand Avenue United Methodist Church with a program featuring violinist Gianni Burriesci of Italy, pianist Tamar Licheli of Georgia, the Polish accordion duo Wiesław Ochwat and Maciej Zimka, and Italian pianist Maximilian Trebo. GRiT, short for Girls Riding Together, creates a low pressure setting to meet other riders, enjoy time outside, and explore the trails. The gathering features casual rides, snacks, and games, with supportive coaches available. No prior experience is required, so newcomers can try mountain biking and experienced riders can find more girls to share the trails with.

DBSCG Fusion World Store Tournament

This event marks the first set of Dragon Ball Super Card Game Fusion World store tournaments. The game brings together characters from every era of the series, and entry is free.

Class 3 RD #2

At West Mountain Overlook, this Class 3 competition features three courses, each with ten gates plus two optional bonus gates set at a 16 inch width. Each run is on the clock, and not finishing within the limit results in a DNF. Scoring is cumulative, with a perfect run worth minus forty points per course and final results based on the combined total from all three courses. A winch is strongly recommended. The payout structure awards 50 percent to first, 30 percent to second, and 20 percent to third, with fields under ten drivers paying 100 percent to the winner. Entry is ten dollars per class for each driver. Following tech inspection and sign ups, there is a drivers meeting, the start order is chosen by chip draw, and the competition begins afterward.

NPMC Motherhood Day

NPMC honors both the arrival of babies and the making of mothers. This event shares guidance and information for a safer, more joyful motherhood journey. The gathering takes place in the Fordyce Room at NPMC.

Wheel Throwing- All Levels

Learn wheel throwing in a welcoming, all-levels course that spans seven weeks. Newcomers can build confidence centering clay and shaping round forms, while returning students refine technique and expand their skills. Instruction covers creating pieces like bowls, cups, and vases, as well as how to glaze finished work. All student pieces are fired in the kilns at Emergent Arts. Tuition is $260, plus a $45 supply fee that includes a 25 pound bag of clay per student, studio glazes, kiln firings, and access to hand tools and wheels. The supply fee also provides a seven-week membership to Emergent Arts with 24/7 studio access for additional practice. Students can coordinate with Kara to receive a door code for entry. Need-based scholarships are available through a simple, non-invasive application by emailing kara@emergentarts.org. Instructors are freelancers and may need a minimum number of participants, and space can be limited, so planning considerations may affect enrollment.

2026 WOMEN'S MTB DAY

Celebrate Women’s MTB Day with a women-focused ride at Cedar Glades Trailhead, followed by a relaxed potluck picnic and time to socialize. Participants should bring a helmet and a mountain bike in good working order. Three trail options are available, labeled Mild, Medium, and Spicy, with further details provided on the sign up form and route information shared ahead of the ride. Riders are ideally comfortable pedaling for 20 to 30 minutes without stopping, and anyone needing accommodations is encouraged to let the organizers know so plans can be adjusted. The event begins promptly, so arriving early is recommended. Expect bike checks and introductions before the rollout, brief group calls, and staggered starts. The ride portion is for women only, while significant others and family members are welcome to join the picnic afterward. Meet at the Cedar Glades Trailhead parking lot. Attendance is free, and an RSVP through the sign up form is requested.

Urban Gypsy Dog Academy Foundations offers a six week small group training experience that builds practical skills for everyday life with your dog. Sessions concentrate on walking politely without pulling, self control, appropriate greetings without jumping, and core obedience commands such as sit, down, recall, and place. Teams also practice staying attentive and engaged even when distractions are present. The program suits dogs that benefit from clearer structure and guidance to remain calm and responsive in common situations. Cajun Boilers Bayou Fest

Cajun Boilers Bayou Fest at Cajun Boilers brings the spirit and flavors of the bayou to Hot Springs while raising funds for First Step. The festivities include a crawfish boil prepared by Cajun Boilers, boat rides on Lake Hamilton with Hot Springs Marina, kid-focused activities and outdoor fun, giveaways, and live music throughout the day. Proceeds support First Step, which provides programs and opportunities for individuals with developmental disabilities in the community. A full menu will be available for anyone not craving crawfish, and attendees may arrive by land or by water thanks to new boat dock access.

The meet wraps up with a complete slate of live Thoroughbred races at the Oaklawn Event Center in Hot Springs. When harvest time arrives, participants use their produce in simple recipes made for kids, connecting the garden to the kitchen in a meaningful way. Each month, families take home a piece of the project, such as seeds, starter plants, or recipe cards, to continue learning at home. The program encourages curiosity, responsibility, healthy eating, and family involvement. Registration includes eight sessions, a personal gardening toolkit, and a complimentary gift for completing the full series. The fee is $100 for members and $200 for non-members, and admission for the participating child plus one guardian is included. Meeting locations change as the season progresses.

BUMS MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND RIDE 2026

Hot Springs Off Road Park hosts a Memorial Day weekend ride featuring a group trail outing. Throughout the weekend, participants can settle in at camp, take casual runs, and form smaller groups to explore the park, leading up to a main ride that starts with meeting in the front parking lot to air down and hold a brief drivers meeting. Trail groups are organized by skill level, from beginner to moderate, to support a full day on the trails. Afterward, a BUMS potluck cookout is planned at a campsite inside the park, to be announced, and participants are welcome to bring a side, dessert, or another dish to share. Lodging is available on-site, and there are hotels located about 15 to 20 minutes away. Bronco Sport vehicles are not recommended for the ride unless lifted or otherwise modified, though anyone may still hang out or ride along as a passenger.

A multi day women’s retreat in Hot Springs centers on spiritual connection and personal growth. Discover how creek-dwelling critters can reveal water quality during a free, hands-on summer series at the Hot Springs Creek Greenway Trail. Led by Hannah, Trail Coordinator with the City of Hot Springs Parks and Recreation Department, this weather dependent, three-part program invites participants to search near the train trestle for biological indicators and other small aquatic life. Dip nets and identification guides will be available to use during the program, and take-home items from the Garland County Conservation District will be offered while supplies last. East Texas Jeep Club returns to Hot Springs Off Road Park for a pre-summer trail gathering that mixes iconic Jeep Badge of Honor routes with other beloved trails around the park. Drivers can challenge their builds or enjoy an easier pace, with options suited to a variety of experience levels. Lodging is available with cabins inside the park, tent camping, RV sites, and additional choices in nearby Hot Springs, Arkansas. A trail leader will be named at a later time. Plan to bring water, snacks, recovery gear, and sunscreen. An optional group dinner in town may be organized after time on the trails, and additional details will be shared as plans come together.

At National Park College in Hot Springs, this free caregiver workshop offers education, training, and support for both family and professional caregivers.
