In a setting known for heat, humidity, and demanding labor, bathhouses in Hot Springs became pathways to opportunity for African Americans, strengthening both individuals and the wider community. This program shares interwoven stories of work and resilience that left a mark on Hot Springs National Park, the surrounding region, and the nation, offered as the country approaches its 250th birthday. Presented as part of a collaborative series from Garland County Library and Hot Springs National Park, it can be experienced in person or via livestream on the Library’s YouTube channel or the Garland County Library Facebook page.

July 4-Red, White, and YOU: Parade and Picnic
Hot Springs National Park presents a patriotic community celebration marking 250 years, created in partnership with the Friends of Hot Springs National Park and America’s National Parks. The festivities begin with a free, community-led parade that steps off from Hill Wheatley Plaza, moves through the heart of the park along Bathhouse Row, and makes its way to Arlington Lawn. The procession highlights milestones across Hot Springs history, tracing a path from ancient rainfall 4,400 years ago to today. Attendees may show their spirit by dressing in red, white, and blue, choosing looks inspired by Uncle Sam or early American founders, and bringing small decorative wagon floats. After the parade, the gathering continues on Arlington Lawn with a community picnic featuring costume contests for children and pets, live performances, face painting, arts and crafts, games, and photo booths. Comfort stations include shade tents, tables, and cooling areas, and nearby vendors offer ice cream and other food for purchase.

Auditions for The Woman in Black will be held at Downtown Hot Springs. The production centers on a solicitor who hires a professional actor to help him share a haunting episode from his past that began at the funeral of a secluded elder. In retelling the events, they confront the chilling presence of the Woman in Black, a grief-stricken spirit linked to the death of her child whose appearance is believed to bring tragedy to anyone who sees her. Roles include Arthur Kipps, a middle-aged solicitor burdened by trauma who narrates and also assumes several smaller parts while reenacting his memories; The Actor, a confident, energetic professional who guides the staging and portrays the younger, headstrong Kipps in the flashbacks; and Jennet Humfrye, the malevolent apparition whose sorrow and rage drive her to haunt the village and Eel Marsh House. Drivers in Trail Class (Class 1) and Modified Class (Class 2) take on two courses per class, each laid out with ten gates and two optional bonus gates. Scoring rewards precision, with the best possible result at negative forty, and the total for the day combines your results from both courses in each class you enter. Each course runs under a set time limit, and exceeding it results in a DNF. A winch is highly recommended. After tech inspection, a drivers meeting sets the stage, then a chip draw determines start order and competition begins. The entry fee is $10 for each class per driver. Payouts are awarded each competition, with 50 percent for first place, 30 percent for second, and 20 percent for third, and if there are fewer than ten drivers the full purse goes to first place.
