BookTalk Bookclub: Atmosphere by Taylor Jenkins Reid

A discussion focuses on Atmosphere, which follows Joan Goodwin, a physics professor and astronomer who wants more than academic life. In the early 1980s, as NASA begins recruiting women scientists for the Space Shuttle program, she is selected and trains with a standout peer, Vanessa Ford. Joan confronts sexism, demanding personal tradeoffs, and family duties, especially to her niece Frances, while slowly acknowledging a love she has kept private. The story reaches a critical moment in December 1984 during mission STS-LR9, when an in orbit emergency erupts and Joan, serving as CAPCOM in Mission Control, supports the crew while balancing intense emotions with professional responsibility. The novel reflects on the pull of big ambitions, the risks and rewards of reaching higher, and how those choices shape who we become. Extra copies are available to check out while supplies last.

Mother's Day Special-Unleash Your Inner Artist – Bob Ross Style Wet-on-Wet Oil Painting

This Mother's Day painting workshop teaches the wet on wet oil technique popularized by artists like Bob Ross, Claude Monet, and Vincent Van Gogh. Guided by Emergent Arts Gallery artist John Chiego, participants create a landscape titled Hidden Falls. All materials are provided, and no prior painting experience is required. Mothers who attend with a teen or adult son or daughter receive complimentary admission. Hosted at Emergent Arts Gallery and Studio, the class centers on a quiet waterfall tucked deep in the woods, a scene that reflects the idea that the most rewarding discoveries often lie beyond the well-worn trail.
