Douglas Lawson Creek Community Volunteers Restoration Day

A community workday at the historic Douglas Island Lawson Creek Cemeteries focuses on thoughtful care and access improvements ahead of the Fourth of July. Organized with the Alaska Native Sisterhood Camp 2 Juneau, this ongoing volunteer effort began in 2021 and enters its fifth year of stewardship. Participants will help trim vegetation, cut back overgrowth, clear fallen branches, gather brush into piles for removal, and reopen pathways to historic graves so markers once hidden by plants can be seen and visited more easily. Volunteers can also photograph graves and upload them to the Find a Grave website to support historical records for families and researchers. Donations of small American flags are requested for placement throughout the grounds in advance of the holiday. With roughly 500 resting places, contributions of any amount are appreciated, and flags will be placed first in the Native section, where work traditionally begins. For safety, parking is requested near the retaining wall to keep traffic moving. Dress for the weather and bring water and a snack. A limited number of tools will be available, and bringing weed whackers, rakes, loppers, or other garden tools is helpful. Individuals, families, youth groups, church groups, and anyone interested in caring for these historic resting places are welcome.
