The University of Alaska Fairbanks Geophysical Institute offers free public tours that highlight research across the Arctic at the state’s largest research institute. Visitors can talk with UAF graduate students about satellites, earthquakes, nuclear monitoring and rocket launches, including how the institute’s blue antenna collects data. This approximately 90 minute experience typically includes stops at the Alaska Earthquake Center, the Wilson Alaska Technical Center and the Alaska Satellite Facility, plus a look at a model rocket that introduces Poker Flat Research Range. No advance registration is needed, though large groups are encouraged to contact the institute beforehand. Recommended for ages 12 and older, and minors must be accompanied by an adult. Campus parking requires a pass available at a blue kiosk or online for $1.25 per hour or $6 per day.

Sign locations change each season, so every round offers a new adventure. A Pawblazer Challenge is available for those exploring with dogs. This season’s lineup includes the Chena River Walk at Griffin Park, Eagle Trail and Island Trail at Tanana Lakes Recreation Area, Slough Loop and Island Trail at Chena Lake Recreation Area, Secret Trail at Skyline Ridge Park, Railway Lane at Pioneer Park or Alaskaland, North Forty and White Bear at Birch Hill Recreation Area, Bev’s Loop at Murphy Dome, the 100 Mile Loop Trail at Isberg Recreation Area, the Seasonal Wetlands Trail at Creamer’s Field, Skarland 9 Mile in the College Hills Subdivision, the Potato Field and T-Field within the UAF North Campus Trails, Beaver Slough Trail at Fifth Avenue Park in North Pole, Angel Rocks Trail and Mastodon Trail in Chena River State Recreation Area, and Quartz Creek Trail plus Tabletop Mountain Trail in the White Mountains National Recreation Area. Alaska Electrical Apprenticeship: Quarterly Application Deadline
The Alaska Joint Electrical Apprenticeship & Training Trust is accepting applications for apprenticeships in the Inside Wireman, Outside Lineman, Telecommunications, and Tree Trimmer trades in Anchorage and Fairbanks. Alaska Works offers free, introductory hands-on training to help prospective applicants build the skills needed to apply. Applicants must be at least 18 at the time of selection, hold a valid Alaska driver’s license, and have a high school diploma or a state-issued GED. A math prerequisite is also required and can be satisfied in one of several ways, including two semesters of high school algebra I or higher with a grade of C or better, a passing postsecondary algebra course, completion of the NJATC tech math course, or a State of Alaska WorkKeys math score of 6 or higher. A complete application includes the online form, a copy of an Alaska driver’s license, official transcripts for high school and any postsecondary education or training including GED records when applicable, a copy of the diploma or GED certificate or high school transcripts that confirm graduation, documentation verifying the math requirement, and the $25 application fee. Qualified candidates will be scheduled for an interview. Applicants who have served in the U.S. military within the past five years, or who can document more than 2,000 hours of electrical construction experience, may be subject to different qualifications. Applications must be completed by the stated deadline.

The program interweaves performance with engaging stories, offering anecdotes and historical context for each figure. Music highlights include James P. Johnson’s The Charleston, Keith Jarrett’s Memories of Tomorrow, and Bill Evans’ Peace Piece. Drotos studied with Dr. Billy Taylor and will share memories from that mentorship, including Taylor’s recollections of Art Tatum. The concert takes place at the UAF Davis Concert Hall. This summer event offers an evening of local music in the company of reindeer, set beneath lingering summer daylight. Attendees may bring friends, chairs, and their own food and beverages while enjoying performances alongside the animals. Returning later in the season offers a chance to see the calves grow. Emily Anderson, an Alaska-raised and Los Angeles based singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, brings intimate, melodic indie folk pop marked by candid emotion and a hopeful spirit. Her work has appeared in a national Miller Lite campaign, on television including Love is Blind Season 8, and in the games Calico and The Stars Between Us. She has toured widely across the United States and Canada, sharing bills with Alex Lahey, Sarah Tudzin, Danielle Ate the Sandwich, and Peter Mulvey. Coverage from outlets such as the Anchorage Press and KUAC has highlighted her vocals, harmonies, and arrangements, and she has been a finalist in competitions hosted by American Songwriter, Songwriting University, and the International Songwriting Competition. She is currently working on a new album.

The sixth annual Fairbanks Tattoo Expo delivers five full days of live, on-the-spot tattooing, hosted by Ink Masters Tattoo Show. More than 90 award-winning artists come together to offer a wide range of styles, including realism, traditional, new school, black and gray, and color work. Tickets are sold at the door only, with single-day admission priced at $25 and a multi-day pass available for $40. All ages are welcome when minors are accompanied by an adult, and children 15 and under enter free with a parent. Tattoos are available exclusively to guests 18 and older with a valid ID. Throughout the weekend, free raffle drawings will award a total of $1,200 in tattoo work with the attending artist of your choice, with multiple chances to win. The fee is $5 and includes the field trip and a fun patch. Pre-registration is required.

Shoppers can browse secondhand clothing from popular brands along with toys, furniture, strollers, car seats, high chairs, swings, and other essential gear, with savings of about 60 to 90 percent off typical retail prices. The sale is open for all shoppers, with an early access option available by presale ticket, followed by free-admission shopping and a final day when most items are offered at half price.
