Geophysical Institute Free Summer Tours 2026

The University of Alaska Fairbanks Geophysical Institute offers free public tours that highlight research across the Arctic at the state’s largest research institute. Visitors can talk with UAF graduate students about satellites, earthquakes, nuclear monitoring and rocket launches, including how the institute’s blue antenna collects data. This approximately 90 minute experience typically includes stops at the Alaska Earthquake Center, the Wilson Alaska Technical Center and the Alaska Satellite Facility, plus a look at a model rocket that introduces Poker Flat Research Range. No advance registration is needed, though large groups are encouraged to contact the institute beforehand. Recommended for ages 12 and older, and minors must be accompanied by an adult. Campus parking requires a pass available at a blue kiosk or online for $1.25 per hour or $6 per day.
