Community Storytime, sponsored by ConocoPhillips Alaska, is a free weekly program for emerging readers. Settle into chairs or floor pillows for a 30 minute session of animal storybooks. It is tailored to ages 4 to 7, and a parent, guardian, or relative must remain with children. All ages are welcome. During the summer, families can add a Little Explorers tour for kids. This one hour experience features stops to see some of the cutest animals and wraps up at the Coffee Shop. Tickets are available online or at the gate, and members receive a 50% discount. If you would like to continue your day, regular admission or membership applies for exploring the trails. The Gift Shop is located at the entrance, and the Kape Espresso Tayo coffee shop is inside the zoo.

Red Cross Summer Youth Program

This free summer program invites youth ages 13 to 18 to explore hands-on, educational activities that build skills and support the community. Participants can spend time with canine helpers while learning about the animal visitation program, help their families prepare for emergencies, and discover how shelters are set up during disasters. Opportunities also include earning babysitting and first aid certification at no cost, creating social media content for a global nonprofit, and logging volunteer hours that can lead to fun rewards. Along the way, participants can make friends, strengthen leadership skills, and make a difference while having fun. Space is limited, so early sign up is recommended. To become an official Red Cross volunteer, an online volunteer application is required, and those under 18 will need parent or guardian consent to help speed approval. Champions of the Wild Annual Gala

Alaska Zoo marks more than 55 years of wildlife care and community service with a renewed vision for the future, guided by a phased master plan developed with BKP Arcthitects. The gala embraces the theme Piece by Piece: Building a Future for Wildlife, celebrating how individual projects, investments, and partnerships come together to shape the zoo’s next chapter. The evening features a thoughtfully plated dinner by Wild Fork and full bar service from El Rodeo, along with creative raffles, a silent auction, and a live auction in partnership with Alaska Premier Auctions & Appraisals. Emcee Heather Doncaster leads the program, with live music by Jared Woods. Guests gather under tents on the zoo lawn, surrounded by elegant lighting and decor, and the night concludes with firepits and cocktails. Proceeds support accessibility through motorized carts, final touches to the camel habitat expansion, ongoing animal enrichment, the purchase of an anesthesia machine, matching funds for a new playground, and scholarship support for ASD student field trip transportation, among other priorities. It is the zoo’s biggest fundraising event of the year.

Learn About 3 Sketchbook Types

Watercolor artist Ron Stocke, recognized internationally, leads a friendly three-hour sketchbook workshop at Blaine’s Art. He explains how he evaluates sketchbook paper and why the surface you choose is central to a watercolor workflow. Through real-time demonstrations and conversation, participants get an inside view of his daily sketchbook habits and the core elements that shape his finished paintings, including composition, figures, perspective, and more. Every attendee receives three sketchbooks, brushes provided by BEE Paper and Royal Langnickel Brush Company, and a set of three watercolor tubes from M. Graham. The sketchbooks include a 140 lb, 100 percent cotton watercolor block, an artist journal, and a Super Deluxe sketchbook, his preferred option. Please bring a palette, drawing tools, and an eraser, along with any additional materials you like to use, since those items are not supplied. This session is well suited for watercolorists, sketchbook enthusiasts, travel journalers, and anyone interested in strengthening a creative practice through sketchbooks. The fee is $10.

Golden Bears Football and ASC Pop Warner Eastside Eagles are partnering to offer a youth development camp that supports football in the Eastside Anchorage community. The camp welcomes boys and girls ages 5 to 14 and is held at the Bartlett High School football field. Participation is free, and advance registration with a signed waiver is required. Each registration form covers one player, so families with multiple participants should complete separate forms. A waiver will be sent prior to the camp and must be completed, printed, and brought to the field. King and Queen of the Hill is a downhill race series at Hilltop Bike Park presented by Kendall Toyota of Anchorage. Friends of Forest Fair Community Work Party

A hands-on weekend in Forest Fair Park focuses on preparing the grounds for the 2026 Girdwood Forest Fair. Volunteers work on setting up the music stages, the T-shirt booth, and the Information booth, paint signs, and handle general cleanup. A barbecue is offered both evenings for those who help, and participants are asked to bring a cup. Work begins each day and continues until the group is finished. It is a lot of effort paired with time among friends and food as preparations continue for one of Alaska’s largest and long-standing festivals.

Bosco’s Comics Cards & Games hosts a sealed-format Lawless Time showdown with prize support that includes special promo cards featuring Maul and Rio Durant, plus additional giveaways from the store. Deck construction requires one leader, one base, and a draw deck of at least 30 cards, and everything else you open becomes your sideboard. Polar Bear Encounters

Get an up-close, behind-the-scenes look at Cranbeary and Kova, the Alaska Zoo’s resident female polar bears. Accompany a zookeeper to observe their daily training and learn about their lives, their relationship, and polar bears in the wild. The experience lasts 30 minutes and is limited to one group of up to four people per date. Registration must be completed online in advance. The fee is $500 for up to four attendees, with a small service fee applied at checkout, and the price covers the encounter plus admission for the day. Participants must be at least 9 years old, with an adult present. A zookeeper will meet the group at the zoo entrance. Purchases are non-refundable, though rescheduling is available in the case of emergency or illness. If anyone feels unwell, notify staff to arrange a new date to protect zoo staff and animals. Cyclists will find an Anchorage Concert Association table offering a free Kaladi Brothers Coffee drink card while supplies last, and a drawing will be held with one attendee receiving tickets to Rock the Hill at the end of the performance. The Summer Concert Series showcases local artists in neighborhoods across Anchorage. Rock the Hill

Rock the Hill returns to Hilltop Ski Area for a two day celebration of music, art, local flavors, and outdoor adventure that highlights Anchorage’s creative spirit. Enjoy live performances, craft food and beer, artisan vendors, hands-on workshops, and plenty of ways to move in the mountain setting, whether that means dancing by the stage, taking a yoga session on the slopes, or cruising on a mountain bike. The lineup showcases homegrown Alaska talent with sights and sounds as varied as the Chugach Mountains. Artist announcements will roll out on @anchorageconcerts on Facebook and Instagram. YMCA of Alaska Summer Hikes - Spencer's Loop Trail

Explore Spencer’s Loop on the Anchorage Hillside with a Y-sponsored hike beginning from Hilltop Ski Area. This in-town route, known in winter for cross-country skiing, makes for a moderate hike covering about 4.6 miles with roughly 741 feet of elevation gain. Plan for around two hours on the trail. The outing is family friendly and pet friendly. Parking is free at Hilltop Ski Area; park toward the far end of the lot and meet at the end of the parking area before setting out. Come prepared with sturdy shoes, layered clothing for changing weather, bug spray, water, and snacks. Hiking poles are optional. If comfortable, carry bear spray, and for typical Alaska conditions bring a map and a fully charged phone.

This two day landscape workshop centers on atmospheric perspective and the craft of making a scene feel spacious and real. Nationally recognized artist Clint Howard leads instruction on how light, value, color, temperature, and softened edges work together to create depth and a sense of distance. The methods apply to any painting medium, including pastel, oil, acrylic, and watercolor. The Alaska Jazz Workshop presents a weeklong jazz camp at the UAA Fine Arts Building. Participants take part in classes throughout the week, and the program features two student and faculty concerts in the building’s recital hall. Instruction is led by guest pianist Amina Figarova, flutist Bart Platteau, and AJW Master Jazz instructors. Champagne Pops Gala

The 58th Annual Champagne Pops Gala kicks off the Anchorage Symphony’s season on the Gail Hoefler Memorial Stage at Atwood Concert Hall, bringing together a formal evening of music and celebration in support of the ASO’s vision of Great Music for Every Life. The featured program, Broadway Rocks!, showcases Broadway vocalists LaKisha Jones, Dan Domenech, and Morgan James in dynamic performances of rock and contemporary favorites, with songs such as Bohemian Rhapsody, Sweet Caroline, Seasons of Love, and Girls Just Wanna Have Fun among others.
