American Flag Maker Class

This multi-session MakerClass guides participants through building a large handcrafted wooden American flag in the 1776 Betsy Ross style, complete with carved stars and raised lettering. The project is paced across several meetings to allow proper time for glue-ups, CNC carving, sanding, painting, and final finishing, so the flag can move thoughtfully from raw boards to a polished display piece. Along the way, participants learn how to prepare and assemble wood panels, operate a CNC router to create the star field and lettering, smooth carved surfaces for a clean finish, and apply stain and paint for the classic red, white, and blue look. No previous CNC experience is needed, and all materials and instruction are provided. Everyone departs with a substantial flag they built themselves and practical new skills in CNC woodworking and finishing, with a focus on craftsmanship, history, and the maker spirit.

From Screen to Shop: CNC Tool Tote Homeschool Maker Class

This homeschool MakerClass at Area 59 guides middle school learners through digital fabrication and hands on building while they create a personalized wooden tool tote. Across six sessions, participants take an idea from the computer to a finished piece in the shop. Students start by measuring, marking, and assembling wood components with care, practicing safe use of basic shop tools. They then shift to a design workspace to craft a simple graphic on a computer, which is carved into the tote on a CNC router, connecting digital design with real world manufacturing. By the end, each student completes a sturdy, functional tote customized with their own CNC engraved artwork and gains foundational skills used in modern fabrication. The class is suited for grades 6 and up, all materials are included, the cost is $160, and basic computer skills are required.

BridgeLab: Engineering for Homeschoolers

This six week homeschool series for students in grades 4 to 6 explores what makes bridges strong and why some designs carry heavy loads while others fail. Through hands-on design, building, testing, and iteration, learners create model bridges while investigating forces such as compression and tension, how loads travel through a structure, and what contributes to structural efficiency. Using craft sticks, simple hand tools, and guided challenges, each session builds on the previous one. Students compare beam and truss styles, make predictions with engineering logic, construct with precision, run controlled load tests, and study failures to refine their designs. The class emphasizes critical thinking, data collection, collaboration, and an iterative mindset used by engineers in the real world. The series concludes with a final load testing challenge that highlights the strongest and most efficient bridge designs. No prior experience is required and all materials are provided.
