"From the Steel City to the White City"

At Lunch With Books at the Ohio County Public Library, Zachary L. Brodt presents the story behind Western Pennsylvania’s presence at Chicago’s 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition, drawing on his book From the Steel City to the White City. The program follows how Pittsburgh moved beyond its image as the nation’s crucible to showcase a maturing culture of invention and enterprise. It explores how abundant petroleum and coal helped make the region a global leader in iron and steel, how the fairgrounds opened doors for local firms to supply materials and display their products, and how headline contributions such as alternating current electricity and the Ferris wheel sat alongside exhibits that captured the area’s industries, resources, and ingenuity. Brodt explains how this spotlight carried into the twentieth century, bringing work, capital, and recognition to companies back home. Brodt is the University Archivist and Records Manager for the University of Pittsburgh Library System and the author of From the Steel City to the White City, which examines Pittsburgh’s impact on the fair and the exposition’s influence on Western Pennsylvania. His work earned the 2016 Arline Custer Memorial Award from the Mid Atlantic Regional Archives Conference for the article Strike Out: A Pirates Pitcher at the Battle of Homestead, and he serves on the council of the Pennsylvania Historical Association. He is also completing a biography of Mary Croghan Schenley, a Pittsburgh heiress whose elopement stirred international scandal and whose philanthropy became closely linked with the city’s Oakland neighborhood. The book has been cited by historians and reviewers as a valuable contribution to the study of world’s fairs and urban history, noting its vivid account of exchange between Pittsburgh and Chicago and its framing of regional events within a wider national narrative.

Crosscurrents 2026 Art Exhibition Opening Reception and Awards Ceremony

"Who Are We?" Photography Exhibit

Who Are We? showcases work by Bellaire High School photography students at the Wheeling Artisan Center. Over the course of the year, students explored self-portraiture in three dimensions by constructing life-size figures of themselves and covering each form with their own photographs to express their personalities. They collaborated throughout the process, adapting to challenges and stepping outside their comfort zones. Each participant will present a sculpture alongside selected photographic works. The opening reception welcomes the public at no cost.

YoungLives Game Night! Alumi Invited!

Enjoy a relaxed game night at C3, Christ Community Church, created for young parents to spend time together with food, games, and activities for both parents and kids. The focus is on moms and dads who are 20 or younger, with eligibility that may also include some 21-year-olds based on the stated guidelines. YoungLives alumni are invited as well. The gathering supports growth in life, faith, and leadership, and encourages friendships with mentors and other parents to strengthen community in the Ohio Valley. If transportation is needed, ride assistance can be arranged. Dads who are 22 or older are considered volunteers and can explore YLVS Dads opportunities, which include completing a volunteer form and an online background check.

Miso Making Class

Learn the fundamentals of making soybean miso in a class at East Wheeling Clayworks’ production space in the Fulton neighborhood of Wheeling, housed in the former Glass Unlimited space. Participants work with koji, the traditional Japanese culture, to begin fermenting soybeans into miso and leave with their own batch in a handcrafted ceramic crock made by East Wheeling Clayworks. The experience includes a meal and a look at Aspergillus Oryae, with dishes such as miso soup, a salad dressed with miso, and focaccia served with miso honey butter. Participants receive recipes for the meal, and the miso started during class will continue to ferment at home for roughly six to nine months.

Now in its thirteenth year, this fundraiser supports Helping Heroes and local veterans. The evening features a steak or chicken fry, along with raffles and games offering prizes. Social Distortion "Born To Kill" Release

This season finale celebrates the many meanings of home. The program opens with Antonio Estévez’s Melodia en el Llano, chosen through a players’ choice initiative in which WSO musicians select a piece tied to their musical stories. Principal second violinist Juan Jaramillo proposed this work as a tribute to his homeland, Venezuela. The concert then features a WSO-commissioned piece by composer and violinist Daniel Bernard Roumain, presented as a premiere with electric violin soloist Tracy Silverman. In the second half, the orchestra performs Dvořák’s New World Symphony, a work shaped by influences he encountered after moving to New York, especially spirituals, contributing to a new American classical sound.

2026 Stairs for Strides 5k

Set at Heritage Port in Wheeling, this 5K pairs a familiar road distance with a steep mid-race climb. Participants head into East Wheeling to ascend the Stairway to Heaven, tackling more than 300 steps before returning to the course and pressing on to the finish. Run or walk, this challenge rewards steady pacing and a strong mindset. Recognition includes medals for the top three overall men and women, plus age group awards for men and women. Every participant receives an official event sweatband, and a commemorative finisher coin is offered to mark the accomplishment. "Business" (a novella) with Allison Pitinii Davis

At Lunch With Books at the Ohio County Public Library, writer Allison Pitinii Davis presents and discusses "Business," a novella that follows the nightlife of working class women as Youngstown, Ohio approaches deindustrialization. After a chance meeting at a nightclub, an auto factory worker and an innkeeper at a trucking motel become catalysts for one another’s freedom. The program features selections accompanied by music and photographs from the real bands and venues that shaped the story, including Left End, a Youngstown glam rock group formed by local autoworkers. This event will resonate with those interested in women’s labor and lives, working class nightlife culture, intergenerational family businesses, and the history of the Steel Belt. Davis is the author of Line Study of a Motel Clerk, a poetry collection recognized as a finalist for the National Jewish Book Award and the Ohioana Book Award, and Poppy Seeds, winner of the Wick Poetry Chapbook Prize. Her novella "Business" appears in Agency 3: Novellas. Her writing has appeared in Best American Poetry, POETS.org, The Oxford American, The Georgia Review, The New Republic, and Studies in Jewish American Literature. She has received support from the National Endowment for the Arts, Stanford University’s Wallace Stegner program, and the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown, and she is a Visiting Assistant Professor of Poetry at Ohio State University.

Ogden Newspapers WVU Medicine Wellness Weekend

This wellness weekend includes a half marathon run and walk with a challenging course, well known for its changes in elevation. There are prize categories for male and female in the Open division. The Saint John’s Bible: Art, Scripture, and Community

Presented at Lunch With Books at the Ohio County Public Library, this program explores The Saint John’s Bible, a contemporary handwritten and illuminated Bible commissioned by the monks of Saint John’s Abbey in Collegeville, Minnesota, and the first project of its kind in more than five centuries. Created by a team of artists and calligraphers led by calligrapher Donald Jackson, the seven volume work brings together the tradition of illuminated manuscripts with modern artistic expression. The presentation offers an introduction to the project’s vision and the techniques used to carry it from initial concept to the completion of all seven volumes, with images and video highlighting key stages of its development. A Heritage Edition volume featuring the Gospels and the Book of Acts, recently at St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church in Wheeling, will be on display. Fr. Joshua Saxe will describe how the manuscript has been used in congregational life for study, prayer, and reflection, showing how it continues to encourage engagement with Scripture. The Ven. Joshua Saxe is Rector of St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church in Wheeling, WV, and has served there since January 2022.

Show of Hands

Show of Hands brings the community together to crowdfund local projects in Wheeling. Guests contribute a $5 donation that serves as a vote, listen to pitches from four chosen entrepreneurs, then select the idea they want to support. The project with the most votes earns a minimum award of $3,000, plus donations collected at the door, to help turn the concept into reality. This gathering showcases the impact of community support for local initiatives. The Friends of the Ohio River & Western HS gather at the Bellaire Public Library for their annual meeting featuring presentations and a guided combination of walking and driving that brings the story of the Ohio River and Western to life. Fairy Garden — Kruger Street Toy and Train Museum

The event is presented by the City of Wheeling and is sanctioned by the International Chili Society. Live music from The New Age Adenas will be featured throughout the day. Celebrate a long-running tradition of Marx toys and trains at this 27th annual gathering that welcomes both collectors and sellers. Jr. Lifeguard Camp

At Garden Park, this junior lifeguard camp offers an early introduction to what lifeguarding involves. Across the week, campers build foundational skills including basic rescue techniques, scanning and surveillance, introductory CPR and first aid, and overall water safety, with communication and teamwork emphasized throughout. Wheeling and Matchbooks: A Perfect Match with Tony Paree

At Lunch With Books at the Ohio County Public Library, Tony G. Paree shares how a rediscovered bowl in his basement filled with vivid matchbooks and covers from places he visited or collected set him on a path to explore Wheeling’s past. These pocket-sized designs promoted restaurants, bars, banks, factories, and other local businesses that once energized the Upper Ohio Valley. A Wheeling native, Paree worked for 45 years at Crone's Clothiers and became a dedicated collector of local memorabilia with a focus on preserving everyday history. His publications include Victorian Trade Cards of Wheeling from 2014 and Real Photo Postcards of Wheeling from 2019.

Free Movie Night

A free film series features PG-rated screenings of Grease, Zootopia 2, and Wicked for Good. In Grease, Sandy and Danny try to rekindle a summer romance after discovering they attend the same high school. Zootopia 2 follows rookie officers Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde as they go undercover in new parts of their city when Gary De’Snake shakes up life in Zootopia, with friends from The Good Zoo taking part. Wicked for Good revisits Oz as Elphaba, branded the Wicked Witch, hides in the forest while Glinda enjoys life at the palace, and a growing mob pushes the two toward a reunion that could reshape their world. These screenings are sponsored by the City of Wheeling. Smoking is not permitted under Wheeling-Ohio County Health Board rules. Alcohol may be allowed within a Public Outdoor Designated Area in accordance with the applicable regulations. Pride: A History

Presented as part of Pride on the Plaza, representatives from Wheeling’s Friendlier City Project lead a look at the roots and evolution of the Pride movement, with a spotlight on the Rainbow Flag as its most widely recognized emblem. The program also highlights how the Friendlier City Project supports a strong LGBTQ+ community in Wheeling by building meaningful partnerships and providing educational opportunities.

A free, weeklong overnight camp at Linsly School invites girls entering 9th and 10th grades to explore science, technology, engineering, and math through hands-on learning and real-world discovery. Presented by YWCA Wheeling, the Girls STEMpowerment Summer Academy combines interactive activities with mentorship and daily field trips to STEM-focused workplaces. Participants can delve into cosmetics concepts by creating a product, visit Oglebay Zoo and learn about hydroponics with a farm-to-table focus, and enjoy outdoor games and team challenges. The experience supports confidence, leadership growth, and new friendships. All meals are provided, and adult supervision is offered by YWCA staff. The program is completely free, and space is limited.
