Opening Day at Blennerhassett Island 2026
A new season begins on Blennerhassett Island, often called West Virginia’s Eden, as the island welcomes visitors back. The island can be reached only by boat. Tickets are available at the Blennerhassett Museum of Regional History, and travel is aboard the Island Belle sternwheeler, which boards at Point Park. Volunteer applications are being accepted by the museum and the Blennerhassett Historical Foundation from people with a variety of interests and skills, including history, agriculture, maintenance, sternwheel boats, horses, sewing, and cooking.

Wood County’s annual community baby shower takes place in the gym at Christian Life Center in Parkersburg and focuses on connecting families with local support. More than 25 agencies and groups will be on hand to share information, and guest speakers will include representatives from WIC, Coplin Health Systems, and Choices Child Care Resources & Referral. Advance registration is required and limited to 40 families. Eligibility is limited to pregnant women and to guardians of a child under one year of age, and attendees must be residents of Wood County with proof of residency. The Coalition will contact each registrant during the week of the event to confirm attendance. If capacity is reached, a waitlist will be used and those on it will be notified if openings become available.

Welcome the Fire: Yoga + Incense Making
Begin by creating your own incense, then allow it to dry while you ease into a gentle outdoor yoga session. The pace is soft and accessible, with a focus on incense and welcoming the element of fire. The cost is $25 and includes all materials for incense making. Dress comfortably, check the forecast, and be prepared for ground that can be uneven and fairly firm. Bring water and any props you like to use, and consider a towel to place under your mat. A limited number of community mats and props will be available on a first come basis. Free parking is available at McDonough, and the class is planned for the open area behind the big log picnic shelter. If taking photos, please be sure everyone pictured has given permission. There are no refunds or credits, but you may transfer your reservation to another student for the same class.

The Castle honors the summer solstice with an outdoor concert paired with insights from staff archaeologist Wes Clarke. For thousands of years, cultures have observed this celestial turning point, and in Marietta it was recognized by Native Americans through alignments on the ancient earthworks. During the program, the duo R&R performs while Clarke shares context about the solstice and its local significance. R&R features West Virginia natives Rick Poling and Roger Bush, longtime collaborators. Roger is known in the Mid-Ohio Valley for standout vocals and adds drumming and percussion, while Rick, a former West Virginia University Mountaineer mascot, is an accomplished pianist and vocalist who brings piano, organ and synth along with left hand keyboard bass to round out the sound. Admission is free. Seating is limited and available on a first come, first served basis, and guests are encouraged to bring a folding chair or blanket. Food and nonalcoholic beverages are welcome, and the lawn is smoke free. If weather becomes an issue, a new date will be set. This concert is sponsored by the Washington County Public Library. Expect slow, flowing movement, deep breathing, and mindful attention while going deeper into the I Chin Ching forms. Instruction on the I Chin Ching is led by Sifu Jason Knapp, head instructor and owner of Shao-Lin, with the yoga elements guided by Michelle Waters of Weird Flex Yoga. The emphasis is an approachable introduction to tai chi combined with a supportive yoga practice, with intensity you can set for yourself within a gentle to medium range. The space uses fluorescent lighting and may feel warmer in hot weather. The floor is padded, so a mat is likely optional. Bring water, any props you enjoy, and wear comfortable clothing for movement. Cost is $20. Parking is free and plentiful, and the training center sits behind The Walk-In Closet Thrift Store. Guest practitioner Amber Lemley of Tranquil Spirit Yoga provides Reiki for the group. Enjoy a charcuterie-style hors d’oeuvres table, desserts, and bottled water. Choose between an in-pool option with a provided inflatable tube and mesh float that keeps you comfortably supported while partially submerged to your midsection or chest, or a pool-side option where you can sit or lie along the edge with a single mat provided. Art in the Alley brings South Court Street in Ripley to life with 12 to 15 West Virginian artists showcasing and selling their work. Food vendors and specialty drink vendors will be on site. A photo booth, a collaborative paint-your-own community mural, and take-and-make craft stations offer hands-on ways to participate, with a few additional surprises planned. At the same time, Downtown Ripley will host a WV Day Birthday Bash, offering a mix of art, community, conversation, and fun.

Set to classic tales by Edgar Allan Poe, this cozy restorative yoga class invites deep rest with fully supported poses held for 5 to 15 minutes. The experience is gentle and restorative, created with beginners in mind and offering options to explore each pose in different ways. The session takes place indoors. Many props are used to support comfort. Participants are encouraged to bring a mat, yoga blocks if available, water, and extra blankets. It is most important to bring a bolster, an overstuffed pillow or a narrow couch cushion, and an overstuffed stuffed animal can work too. Straps, blocks, blankets and community mats may be on hand, but availability is not guaranteed. Dressing for cozy comfort is recommended. A listening party and a stripped down full-band performance mark the release of William Matheny’s new studio album, Material Witness. A West Virginia native with deep Appalachian roots, Matheny is the grandson of Mansfield Matheny, lead singer of The Rhythm Rascals, and has been performing since age 9. He has appeared on The Mountain Stage Radio Show four times and on Red Barn Radio as well. Material Witness, released by Diamond Teeth Records, is available to preorder, and the album will also be for sale at the in-store event, with all sales and proceeds going directly to the artists.

This class meets on the second Sunday of each month, scheduled after the Sunday morning sound baths.
Archaeology Camp
The Castle’s Archaeology Camp invites students entering grades 6 through 8 to take part in real archaeological fieldwork. Participants work on a historic pottery manufacturing site in Ohio, one of the oldest of its kind, practicing proper excavation methods, learning how professionals sort and sift for finds, and examining artifacts to identify them. The camp is led by professional archaeologist Wes Clarke. Registration is $50 per camper. Space is limited, scholarships are available in limited numbers, and pre-registration is required.
