Candle light Wednesdays

At Mystic Remedies on Doty Island, the usual electric glow gives way to candles as the space is carefully prepared and everything settles into a gentler rhythm. There are no promotions to seek out and no shows to catch, only a calm, intentional atmosphere. Conversations grow hushed, the sense of time stretches, and visitors can slow down, take their time, and explore at a comfortable pace. Mental Health Matters Luncheon

Altrusa International Foundation of Appleton, WI Inc., a nonprofit service club that supports local agencies meeting basic needs and fostering self-sufficiency, presents the seventh Mental Health Matters luncheon honoring Mental Health Awareness Month at Bridgewood Resort Hotel & Conference Center. The program features keynote speaker Carson Molle. Carson's life changed in 2017 when, at 14, he survived a suicide attempt that resulted in significant physical injuries along with emotional and psychological trauma. He and his family chose to share their journey to help others, and he has spent the past seven years speaking openly to break the stigma surrounding suicide and mental health. His work includes speaking at events locally and nationally, lobbying Congress for increased mental health funding, and appearing on talk shows that address these difficult topics. By sharing his story of recovery, he aims to help others find hope and know they are not alone. Half of the funds raised will be donated to NAMI Fox Valley, the Appleton affiliate of the National Alliance on Mental Illness, which provides support, education, outreach, and advocacy for thousands of community members each year. The remaining half will support other local nonprofits through Altrusa Appleton grants and gifts, as well as a scholarship for a local high school senior over the coming year.

Six Flags Great America Brigade Trip

This outing to Six Flags Great America focuses entirely on enjoying the theme park’s rides and attractions, with transportation planned in 12-passenger vans and travel to and from the Brigade. Participants ages 14 and older may explore in their own groups, while those under 14 will remain with a designated chaperone. For added safety in a large park setting, each student will be issued an AirTag so leaders can view general location if someone becomes separated, and all devices will be distributed and collected the same day. Lunch and dinner are purchased at park concessions. The park accepts card payments only, and a cash-to-card kiosk is available for conversion. Families who prefer a chaperone to manage spending money can send it in a Ziplock bag labeled with the child’s name, and funds can be stored in a locked locker. The plan includes travel to the park, time to experience the attractions, a stop at McDonald’s on the return trip that is included in the cost, and arrival back at the Brigade. Timelines are approximate due to group travel and traffic, and a text update will be sent after leaving McDonald’s. This trip is best suited to those who enjoy roller coasters and other high-thrill rides.
