Wis. Whoppers: Sensationalistic Storytelling, Tall Tale Tourism & Cryptid Currency in Badger State

At Pioneer Park Historical Complex, folklorist and UW-Madison professor Dr. Lowell Brower leads an engaging exploration of Wisconsin’s wild stories and legendary figures. From fish tales to hodag hunts to big top spectacles, this talk traces a tradition of boastful legends, self-deprecating humor, and playful fabrication in the Badger State. Blending the styles of master storytellers, carnival barkers, and homespun humorists, it looks at how municipalities, businesses, institutions, advertisers, and individual narrators have used folklore to draw attention, money, tourism, and notoriety. Through entertaining and sometimes otherworldly narratives, these efforts have influenced how both residents and visitors imagine what it means to be a Badger. Grounded in the idea that legends and tall tales reveal the values, worldviews, fears, anxieties, hopes, dreams, and capacities of the people who share them, the program considers what the stories we tell, and the hodags we pursue, can say about identity. This event is part of the Hodag Heritage Festival and is free and open to the public with first-come, first-served seating. It is sponsored by the Pioneer Park Historical Complex and presented as part of the Wisconsin Historical Society History Makers Tour. The History Makers Tour is presented by Culver’s and is made possible in part by the Institute of Museum and Library Services, Grant Number MA-253159-OMS-23.

CULTURE TALKS: Why Wisconsin's Lakes Are Extra Special

This Culture Talks session features limnologist Carol Warden with a look at how lakes function and what sets Wisconsin’s apart. She will discuss how lakes change across the seasons and from year to year, share insights from a long running ecological research effort spanning 45 years, and underscore the importance of stewardship and protection. The event is part of the Spring and Summer series The World Around Us, which explores the natural landscapes of the Northwoods and safe, meaningful ways to experience them. A question and answer period follows each session. There is no cost and the public is welcome, and events in this series take place at The Hilgermann Center. The views expressed are those of the presenter and not necessarily those of The Hilgermann Center, and organizers ask all participants to remain civil and respectful. Warden has studied lakes since 2007, moved to the Northwoods in 2010 for full time research with UW Trout Lake Station in partnership with the Wisconsin DNR, and earned a Master of Science through the Nelson Institute for Environmental Studies at UW Madison that same year. In her free time she enjoys being outdoors, especially on the water.

Jerow brings 34 years of experience with the Wisconsin DNR and holds a degree in soil science from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.
