The ensemble brings together three standout Madison musicians whose distinct voices blend into a sound that is both warm and lively, with rich harmonies, soulful improvising, and a driving groove that holds attention from the first notes. Trumpeter Jan Hora is an educator and producer who also serves as CFO for Eternally Ours Entertainment. His performance credits include work on cruise ships and Broadway tours, and he now calls Stoughton home. He shares his expertise through private teaching and performs with precision, grace, and creativity. Bassist John Greene draws on many years across instruments and genres. After a long detour practicing law, he returned to jazz bass and is becoming an in-demand player on the local scene. "Daughter of the Light" film screening and discussion

A feature-length screening of "Daughter of the Light" is followed by a conversation with its filmmaker, Khashem Gyal. The program takes place on the main floor of Grainger Hall in Room 1175. The documentary runs 1 hour and 39 minutes. Released in theaters across China in 2024, it became the first Tibetan documentary to receive a nationwide theatrical run and was among the year’s most-watched nonfiction films, a landmark moment for Tibetan cinema. The story centers on 13-year-old Metok Karpo, who lives at a Tibetan boarding school for orphans although both parents are alive. Raised by her maternal grandparents, she sets out across her home grasslands to find her father after her mother’s remarriage is followed by the sudden death of her stepfather. Meeting her father and his new family stirs conflicting emotions that she channels through imaginative drawings. As smartphone dating trends spread, traditional nomadic values strain, and divorce increasingly affects families in Tibet. The film follows her search for her father and a place to belong amid rapid social change. Neurogenic Yoga at Main Street

Set aside 90 minutes for a special drop-in Neurogenic Yoga class, part of a rotating series of unique offerings. This session blends yoga postures and breathwork with the body’s natural tremor response to help unwind long-held muscular tension and ease stress. Gentle vibration often starts in the legs and can move through the body as the nervous system releases. Drawing on Dr. David Berceli’s Trauma Releasing Exercises, the practice uses a range of techniques to encourage neurogenic tremors. The class begins with a physical warmup to invite tremoring, continues with about 20 to 25 minutes of tremor practice, then concludes by intentionally stopping the tremors and integrating the nervous system. It is designed for all experience levels and is intended to complement, not replace, medical or psychological trauma care. Individuals who require strict regulation of physical or psychological conditions, who have fragile psychological defenses, a complex trauma history, or significant physical or medical limitations should consult a medical practitioner. Reported benefits include deep relaxation, relief from chronic tension, better sleep, improved circulation and flexibility, uplifted mood, increased energy and stamina, fewer aches and pains with potential relief for sciatica and fibromyalgia, greater mobility, a stronger sense of grounding and focus, and support for healing recent or past injuries. Memberships and class passes may be used. Pre-registration is available, or drop in and the front desk can assist with sign-up if space permits. Instruction is provided by Alex Pfeiffer, certified in both Neurogenic Yoga and TRE.

The 14-time JUNO Award nominee and longtime member of Great Big Sea arrives on the heels of Welcome Home, his fourth solo album and twentieth release, blending his trademark celebratory spirit with a more intimate, lower-range approach. Recorded in Montreal with producer-engineer Marcus Paquin, the album includes collaborations with Jimmy Rankin, Donovan Woods, and Hollywood actor Oscar Isaac, and the songs are amplified on stage by Doyle’s accomplished band. Special guests Bandits on the Run bring a Brooklyn-born mix of indie folk and theatrical storytelling. The trio of Adrian Blake Enscoe, Sydney Shepherd, and Regina Strayhorn began after a chance meeting while busking in New York subways and gained national attention in 2019 when their song Love in the Underground was featured by NPR’s Tiny Desk Contest Top Shelf. Two Player Scramble

Teams of two take on a co-ed scramble that spotlights teamwork and friendly competition. Both partners tee off, the preferred ball is selected, and each player hits from that spot until the hole is completed. Champions are recognized in two divisions: Gross, which requires no handicap and rewards the lowest score, and Net, which uses handicaps. The team handicap is calculated by combining 35 percent of the A player’s handicap with 15 percent of the B player’s handicap. Men play from blue tees and women from gold tees. A white tee option is available to players age 60 and older with a 3.0 or higher handicap, as well as to any player with a 15.0 or higher handicap. Teams may be co-ed, all-male, or all-female. If a team has no established handicaps, it will compete in the Gross division. Players choosing the white tees must email Tournament Director Ryan Brinza in advance to declare that selection.

Djangophonique

At North Street Cabaret, Djangophonique appears with a special five-piece lineup. Andrew Brown and Katie Lynne of the Ann Arbor-based group are joined by award-winning multi-instrumentalist Christopher “Christo” Ruppenthal from Madison and Ann Arbor’s Grant Flick, with veteran Michigan bassist Tom Knific completing the ensemble. Together they dive into the Hot Club swing tradition of Django Reinhardt and the American standard songbook, spotlighting guitar, violin, and steel guitar features alongside distinctive repertoire that blends styles in fresh ways. Djangophonique is an award-winning project that channels the joy and freedom at the core of jazz manouche, balancing deep respect for the tradition with creative twists that speak to longtime fans and newcomers alike. This five-artist collaboration has earned warm receptions in historic theaters, outdoor concert series, festivals, and nightclub settings, and they have toured together and shared the stage at the Ann Arbor Django Reinhardt Festival. Ruppenthal brings a singular mix of Jazz and Vaudeville era flavors with hot Hawaiian steel guitar and ukulele, as well as Django-inspired swing. Flick is a versatile performer, recording artist, composer, educator, and collaborator who moves among violin, mandolin, tenor guitar, nyckelharpa, tenor banjo, and viola, drawing from new acoustic music, jazz manouche, swing, bluegrass, and American old-time, and writing chamber-influenced pieces in projects such as Westbound Situation, Warren & Flick, and Hannah O’Brien and Grant Flick. Knific is a bassist, composer, and educator whose classical training and lifelong dedication to jazz inform acclaimed performances, recordings, original works, and a meaningful teaching legacy.

*VENUE CHANGE* The Wailin’ Jennys

This performance has moved to the Barrymore Theatre. The Wailin’ Jennys, the trio of Nicky Mehta, Ruth Moody, and Heather Masse, bring their hallmark harmonies and folk roots sound to a fully seated concert. Ticket options include first row seating at $95 in advance and $100 on the day of the show, with general admission seating at $75 in advance and $80 on the day. What began as a one-time collaboration in a small Winnipeg guitar shop grew into an acclaimed international folk act. Their debut, 40 Days, earned a Juno Award for Roots & Traditional Album of the Year and led to frequent appearances on A Prairie Home Companion and tours across Canada, the United States, and beyond. The follow-up, Firecracker, pushed into alt-country, pop, and rock, received a Juno nomination, won a Folk Alliance award for Contemporary Release of the Year, and spent more than 56 weeks on the Billboard charts. The live album Live at Mauch Chunk Opera House also spent over a year on the Billboard bluegrass charts, capturing their harmonies, instrumental skill, and playful onstage banter. Bright Morning Stars, recorded with producer Mark Howard and co-produced with David Travers-Smith, won the Juno for Roots and Traditional Album of the Year in 2012 and blended Americana, pop, and traditional folk with the group’s signature vocals. To mark 15 years together, they released Fifteen, a collection of favorites recorded with longtime collaborators Richard Moody and Adam Dobres, which earned a 2018 Juno nomination for Traditional Roots Album of the Year. The trio continues to tour while road testing new songs for a forthcoming studio release.

Built around an Out of This World theme, it highlights creations from design teams while raising support for free literacy resources and brand new books for kids, families, and educators. Author Talk: THE TRAVELER by Joseph Eckert

An author talk featuring UW graduate Joseph Eckert highlights his debut novel, The Traveler, published by Tor Books. The story follows a cautious time traveler and his son, exploring a bond that endures across millennia through moments of sorrow, hope, and astounding futures. The book is available for pre-order and also makes a thoughtful Father’s Day gift. James Rollins, a #1 New York Times bestselling author, praises it as a compelling blend of time travel and family drama and counts it among his favorite debuts of the year. Eckert grew up in northern Wisconsin, studied history at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, earned a master’s degree in political science from the University of Iowa, and has been writing speculative fiction since high school, often centering believable people in extraordinary circumstances. He lives in Greater Seattle with his family and a notably grumpy cat.

Griffin House

American singer and songwriter Griffin House brings a storytelling focused, seated performance to The Bur Oak. For more than two decades he has toured widely and built a catalog of more than 13 albums. His debut, Lost and Found, drew national attention on CBS Sunday Morning when music critic Bill Flanagan, then a VP at MTV/VH1, highlighted him as a standout emerging songwriter. Years of grassroots touring, including opening stints for John Mellencamp and the Cranberries, helped cultivate a loyal following, and he later stepped into national headliner status with an appearance on Late Night with Craig Ferguson and the underground hit The Guy That Says Goodbye to You Is Out of His Mind. His journey is chronicled in the Amazon Prime documentary Rising Star, which explores life on the road alongside marriage, fatherhood, and sobriety. His music has appeared on television series including One Tree Hill, Rescue Me, Party of Five, and Everwood, and his work has earned coverage in outlets such as Paste, No Depression, and Rolling Stone. American Songwriter has praised his raw talent. His recent EP, The Tides, features five songs recorded with Grammy Award winning producer Jacquire King. Tickets are $25 in advance and $28 day of show. This is a seated event.
