*SOLD OUT* Fresh Gnocchi & Pesto Class with Layered

Spend two hours immersed in the craft of handmade Italian comfort food while learning to prepare pillowy potato gnocchi and a vibrant basil pesto from scratch. Instruction blends demonstration and hands-on work, with about one quarter of the class spent actively cooking, most of the session led by guided demos, and a brief portion reserved for down time. From choosing the right potatoes to cooking, saucing, and serving, participants build the confidence to recreate the full meal at home and take the recipes with them. Key skills include making classic Pesto alla Genovese in a food processor, understanding how ingredients and technique keep the sauce bright green and how to store it, and exploring potato type and moisture so the dumplings stay light, including why ricing matters. The lesson covers working 00 flour and egg into a delicate dough without overmixing, shaping with a gnocchi board so ridges grip the sauce, and boiling properly with well-salted water while using pasta water to achieve a silky finish. The session begins with a welcome, introductions, and refreshments, then moves into a step-by-step pesto demonstration. A short break follows before a focused look at mixing the potato dough. Students then roll, cut, and shape their gnocchi, watch a quick cooking demo, and wrap up by plating and enjoying the fresh gnocchi with pesto prepared during class. Amenities include a snack counter with house-made nonalcoholic beverages, charcuterie and fruit skewers, a dessert, and a Keurig coffee station. Aprons, professional gnocchi boards, and all required tools are provided, and everyone receives the class recipes. The evening concludes with a full serving of gnocchi and pesto. Tickets are nonrefundable. If attendance is not possible, a ticket may be transferred to another person but not to a different class. Doors open 10 minutes before the scheduled start, and those hoping to sit together should arrive when doors open since specific seating cannot be guaranteed even for groups who purchased tickets together. No prior experience is required. For questions, contact info@layeredcakeartistry.com.

Lewis is an associate professor in the School of Politics, Philosophy, and Public Affairs at Washington State University. His research focuses on the connections among trust, conflict, and democracy, and his scholarship has appeared in journals such as the Journal of Peace Research, Political Behavior, Political Psychology, Political Geography, Social Movement Studies, and the Journal of Conflict Resolution.

Rapéh Circle & Guided Meditation with Thlachi and Tati

Settle into a ceremonial circle with Thlachi and Tati for an afternoon focused on grounding, breath, prayer, and deep listening. The gathering centers on rapéh, a traditional Amazonian snuff made from mapacho tobacco with powdered medicinal plants and ashes. Prepared through grinding, burning, and prayer, this medicine is offered to align mind, body, and spirit. Experiences differ for each person, and may include calm, mental clarity, emotional movement, or a gentle release of stagnant energy. The session opens with a brief check-in and an introduction to the chosen blend, including its qualities and the chakras it most affects. A grounding breathwork practice follows to settle the nervous system and prepare the body and mind. Rapéh is then shared in a respectful ceremonial setting, followed by a guided meditation to support reflection and inner exploration. Time at the end allows for optional sharing, integration, and community connection. All levels are welcome, whether it is a first encounter with rapéh or part of an ongoing practice. This work can support those seeking to slow down, clear heaviness, deepen meditation, and reconnect with presence and prayer. Every person’s experience is unique and held with care. Please consider health needs. Rapéh may not be suitable for those who are pregnant, dealing with serious heart conditions or uncontrolled blood pressure, experiencing severe mental health challenges, or highly sensitive to nicotine. If unsure, seek professional guidance. Wear comfortable, loose clothing and bring a yoga mat, water, and any blankets or pillows that help you feel cozy and grounded. Mats, blankets, and pillows are also available to borrow in the studio. The exchange is $20, and the group is limited to 10 participants to keep an intimate and intentional space.

Smoke & Shine Showdown BBQ Contest

A sanctioned PNWBA Backyard BBQ competition brings the sizzle to Richland’s Uptown Shopping Center as part of the Cool Desert Nights Show n Shine. Teams cook outdoors in the parking lot near Daisy Ranch Saloon and present chicken wings and pork spare ribs to a panel of community judges. After judging, extra or leftover competition meats may be offered to the public as samples. Sampling centers on small tastes, not full meals. Only single pork spare rib bones and individual chicken wings or wing segments are allowed. Payment is by paper tickets priced at two dollars each, with teams free to set a price up to three tickets per sample. Teams keep seventy five percent of ticket sales and receive proceeds from the Richland Chamber of Commerce following the awards, and a W-9 may be required for larger totals. Additional food options will also be available nearby at the classic car show and the regatta. Teams that sample must register for a health permit covered by the producer. Compliance with Benton-Franklin Health District regulations is required and sites will be inspected. At least one team member must hold a current Washington Food Handler card. Violations can lead to loss of sampling privileges or disqualification without refunds. Competition guidelines follow PNWBA Backyard rules. Cooking is limited to charcoal, wood, or wood pellets. Each team competes independently, maintains a clean site, and must have a properly rated and current fire extinguisher. The minimum competitor age is fourteen, participants under eighteen need parent or guardian approval, intoxication or unsportsmanlike conduct results in disqualification, and the PNWBA event representative has final authority on scoring and rules. Category standards apply. Pork entries are bone in ribs turned in one bone per piece with at least eight pieces, saucing is optional with no pooling, no garnish is used, and ribs may be pre trimmed but not seasoned or cooked before onsite setup. Chicken entries are bone in wings, either whole or segments as defined by the event, with at least eight matching pieces, saucing allowed without pooling, and no foreign objects such as bacon. Seasoning and cooking begin only after arrival and setup. Before inspection is passed, meats must be held at safe temperatures and teams must have well iced coolers, a three bin wash, rinse, sanitize station with soap and bleach, a handwash station with a free flowing spigot and catch bucket, a sanitizing bucket with solution and clean cloth, and a digital thermometer. Seasoning and turn in boxes are issued only after inspection. Each team is allotted four standard parking spaces for its cook site. Electricity is limited, so a quiet generator is recommended if power is needed. Potable water and ice are available, with on site options for trash, ash, grease, and grey water disposal. Parking is at the cook site, and hotels and camping can be found in and around Richland. For event information, contact organizer Chandra Christenson at 509-987-4003 or 509-430-8786 or information@richlandchamber.org. The Key Ceremony - Capricorn Full Moon Gathering with Lacey

Under the Capricorn Full Moon at Lifted Lotus Yoga, this gathering with Lacey offers a welcoming space for reflection, release, and clear intention. Rooted in Capricorn’s steady wisdom that lasting change is built one choice at a time, the evening focuses on letting go of what no longer supports growth and moving forward with purpose. The experience weaves together a grounding yoga practice, guided meditation, journaling, Moon Salutations known as Chandra Namaskar, and other lunar practices that cool the body and open participants to the moon’s energy. In a releasing ritual, attendees write down what they are ready to set aside, then use the cleansing elements of fire and sage to symbolically send it away. Drawing from an ancient Tantric view of the moon as a source of vitality, the sequence is offered as a way to replenish energy and deepen self-understanding. To close, each person selects a symbolic key to take home as a reminder that new doors may be closer than they seem. The cost is $7. Space is limited, and advance registration is required.

*SOLD OUT* Pop Tart Baking Class with Layered

This sold-out hands-on baking class trades the box for scratch-made toaster pastries. Guided by an instructor, you will focus on building a tender, flaky pie dough by keeping fats cold and managing moisture so gluten stays in check, then shape pastries with confident rolling, cutting, and crimping. The class balances 55 percent active participation with 45 percent instructor demonstration and just 5 percent inactive time, and it welcomes absolute beginners as well as seasoned home bakers. You will make a small batch of your own dough, see how two fillings come together—classic cinnamon sugar and strawberry cream cheese—and learn to turn one base glaze into lemon, vanilla, and strawberry varieties. After a brief refreshment break, you will assemble three different flavors, finish them with glazes and toppings, and enjoy a tasting. Aprons and all required tools are provided. A snack counter features house-made nonalcoholic drinks, charcuterie and fruit skewers, a dessert, and a Keurig coffee station. Everyone leaves with the class recipes. You will also take home three custom pop tarts along with extra cups of glaze to bake and finish later. Tickets are nonrefundable. If you cannot attend, you may transfer your ticket to another person, but tickets cannot be moved to a different class. Group seating is not guaranteed. No experience is required.

Permanent Ink: Why We Still Love Print in the Digital Age

Trace the path from handwritten records to the printing press and into today’s digital world, where search engines and AI deliver information in an instant. This talk looks at how each wave of technology has influenced how people share knowledge, express ideas, and stay connected as communities. It also considers what lessons print offers in an era of constant online input and why, even with faster and more convenient options, printed media continues to attract readers. At the conclusion, attendees can experiment with a portable press and make a print themselves. This free program is presented in partnership with Humanities Washington and Columbia Basin College.
