The program focuses on traditional pieces that form the heart of the instrument’s repertoire. The kora is traditionally played by Griots, also called Jalis or Jelis, oral historians whose songs recount war, hardship, love, and loss while preserving the history of Mande society, where the instrument originated. Gaskell began his kora journey in 2006 after hearing a live performance by Kane Mathis, who became his first teacher. He later traveled to Brikama, Gambia, to study with Moriba Kuyateh and his father, the late Malamini Jobarteh. Sponsored by the Friends of the Richland Library.

Kennewick Masonic CenterGhost Chili Cooking Class with Fast & Curryous
Spice lovers can explore an interactive, hands-on cooking class with Fast & Curryous, led by Kavita and Dave, at Purple Star Winery. The centerpiece is their renowned Ghost Chili, first created for the Pasco Fiery Foods Festival and now a frequently requested favorite with a devoted following. This session is crafted for those who enjoy bold flavor and serious heat. Participants will learn the signature recipe step by step, cook their own dish, and practice balancing intensity with flavor so the result is hot and delicious. The meal is enjoyed in a relaxed, social setting with a glass of wine or beer. The class also highlights pairing, featuring Purple Star Riesling to complement the spice. A touch of sweetness can soften the burn, bright acidity refreshes the palate, and lower alcohol helps keep the heat in balance. Fruit notes such as citrus, peach, and green apple contrast the deep, spicy character of the chili, bringing both elements into harmony. Beer is available as an alternative and offers a refreshing counterpoint to the bold flavors. Expect to notice how your beverage changes the way you experience heat, easing the spice while revealing more layers of flavor. Included are hands-on instruction, all ingredients and supplies, a glass of Purple Star Riesling or beer during class, a full bottle of Purple Star wine to take home, and recipe materials for recreating the dish later.

Richland Public LibraryFresh Ravioli Class with Layered
Spend 2.5 hours in a hands-on culinary workshop focused on crafting spinach and ricotta ravioli from start to finish. An instructor guides the process, covering how to develop supple pasta dough, assemble a flavorful filling, and finish the dish with a classic butter sauce. The format blends demonstration and participation, with most time devoted to instructor-led techniques, dedicated hands-on practice at the table, and a brief period of inactive time while dough rests and pasta cooks. Learn what gives pasta its tenderness by exploring gluten development and elasticity. Watch how a traditional spinach and ricotta filling comes together with aromatics like nutmeg and garlic. Use a pasta machine to roll thin sheets, then practice professional spacing, sealing, and cutting methods to prevent bursting. See how a brown butter sauce with sage and garlic is made to complement your handmade ravioli. The session begins with a 15 minute welcome that includes access to snacks and beverages, then moves into a 15 minute dough demonstration on kneading, resting, and flour selection. A 30 minute filling demo follows, covering wilting fresh spinach and blending it with ricotta and specialty cheeses. After a 10 minute break for a stretch and beverage refill, students spend about 50 minutes rolling, filling, and sealing uniform squares. The class wraps with a 30 minute sauce demonstration and service, where the pasta is cooked and enjoyed tossed in a fresh sage butter sauce. Amenities include a refreshment counter with house-made non-alcoholic drinks, charcuterie and fruit skewers, a dessert, and a Keurig coffee station. Aprons and all necessary tools are provided, and every participant receives the recipes to recreate the dish at home. A full plate of the prepared ravioli is served to each student. Tickets are non-refundable and may be transferred to another person but not to a different class. Doors open 10 minutes before the scheduled start, and those hoping to sit together are encouraged to arrive when doors open since seating cannot be guaranteed. No prior cooking experience is required.
